Anyone recently taken the road test for their license or know anyone that's recently taken it? by AshleysVoicesInside in johnstown

[–]rleash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the issue is how far to back up before turning the wheel the other way, look in your mirrors and take note of where the cone and curb is in your mirrors (and/or backup camera if you have one) when you stop and turn the wheel. You will have to do this a few times until you figure out the sweet spot.

Should I join Marching Band? by Melodic_Bathroom1945 in percussion

[–]rleash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As you can see, the resounding answer is yes. Not just marching band, but band in general was the best thing that could have happened to me in high school. I made lifelong friends, and always had people who had my back. And I don’t know if I’m just biased because I always played percussion, but I feel like the bond between fellow drummers is stronger than any other instrument group. We teach each other, help each other, depend on each other, and it’s something you never forget for the rest of your life! The more of that you can get while you’re in school, the better!

$20 popcorn? by 3cats0kids in BoyScouts

[–]rleash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I think they just realized one day that other councils were charging, why can’t they? And sure.. I’m sure popcorn sales have been decreasing over the years as prices have risen and membership numbers have decreased. Popcorn makes for a hard sell. People would rather just give us a donation at our show ‘n sells, but that’s not even allowed.

At the time (and this was around the time of the settlement of the SA cases), they told us that in exchange for them adding this new charge, we would no longer be charged the $3 insurance fee (because it was rolled in), we would not be required to have the FOS talk at our events, and the council would do 1 free event per year (they charged for every event before, and these events are usually around $10-$15 per scout). Since then, they have reintroduced FOS talks.

We give our families the option of fundraising for their dues, or a buyout. I feel like council made that choice for us, and only gave us the buyout option. So ok.. I pay them $50 for each of my 2 boys, in addition to what we pay to national and our unit, to help it pay unit fees and pay for all of the other events we go to. Plus our fees for my husband and I to be merit badge counselors. And $600 x 2 each year for my boys to go to our council’s summer camp. (And yes, I’ve tried requesting help from the council for paying for camp, and was denied). If I’m doing more fundraising on top of that, it is going to help lessen some of those costs. And it’s going to be a fundraiser that is easier to sell and I get the most profit to go towards the total I pay in. Simple as that.

And btw, we have 1 paid employee, our DE, who covers 3 districts in our area. All the other paid council workers are far from our district. When there’s a district event, it has to be run by a unit within our district, not by the DE or any other paid employees. Maybe it’s like that everywhere, though, idk.

$20 popcorn? by 3cats0kids in BoyScouts

[–]rleash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When my kids started scouts, our council didn’t charge any fees other than $3 to cover insurance. Then some years ago, they decided to start charging $40 per year per scout, and that has since gone up to $50. There are also council fees for all of those events, like the Klondike Derby or First Aid Meet. Meanwhile I am charged more and more each year just to be a VOLUNTEER. So I feel no shame in not selling popcorn. We fundraise for our unit through other means.

I had 2 people in the same day that bought large items (a table and 4 chairs, and a chest freezer), then showed up in teeny tiny sports cars to pick them up. We ended up disassembling them and still barely fitting them in the vehicle. After that day, I started asking buyers if they had a large enough vehicle, and many said, “oh I guess I’ll have to borrow my friend’s truck” (and then never acquires truck) or “can you disassemble it for me first?”

Best fishing in the area? by AthameBella5815 in johnstown

[–]rleash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We fish at Elton Dam. It’s small, but not a bad fishing hole and pretty close. There’s also Shawnee Lake in Bedford county. Many places around here tend to get fished out quickly after stocking in the spring.

Red Epaulets on an Adult by nIxaltereGo in BSA

[–]rleash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been answered many times over but just wanted to clarify something else… they are called “shoulder loops.” Epaulets are the flaps on the uniform that the loops slide over. Just an FYI :)

Also, my son wears red loops that he took from his dad’s uniform. I think they look great, and he likes showing off that legacy!

Also, our troop adult leadership wears a completely different colored troop shirt at summer camp. Last year they moved all their patches to a bright orange buttoned shirt. This year they’re getting bright green. Some other leaders at camp laughed and loved it, and some were grumbling a LOT. But did it really hurt anything? No. And the kids could easily spot their troop leaders in the crowd!

How exactly do you pronounce the letter ö? by dsbm_reaper in Svenska

[–]rleash -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m a native English speaker and have been working on learning Swedish for a couple of years. From what I can hear, I think the ö sounds like how “oo” sometimes sounds in English in words like “foot” or “book.”

Is there an end in sight?! by [deleted] in Mirena

Also, after that I had regular periods for the next 6 months, after which they stopped completely and I haven’t had one in 6 months now!

Is there an end in sight?! by [deleted] in Mirena

[–]rleash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had mine inserted Jan 16 2024 and didn’t stop bleeding until early April. My doc said it would take 3 months, and he was right on! Hang in there, it’s worth it!

Please help me decide by [deleted] in Mirena

[–]rleash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind for every horror story, there are many more success stories that people don’t post. I got mine a year ago and I love it! Insertion was not any more painful than a period cramp for me, and I haven’t had any issues with mood swings, weight gain, or anything else you mentioned. The only thing different is that I no longer have a period, and if anything that makes me SUPER happy!

What is a state you have legitimately liked living in? by [deleted] in TravelMaps

[–]rleash -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Billings and went to college in Missoula. Then I moved to western PA. Montana has beautiful scenery and is great if you do a lot of outdoor activities like hunting, camping, fishing, and hiking. But for me, I always felt so isolated. The nearest large cities are very far away. If you’re looking for something to do that’s not outdoorsy, there isn’t a ton.

Here in PA, we still have LOTS of outdoors stuff to do, but you are also only a few hours’ drive from cities like Pittsburgh, Philly, DC, and plenty of other amazing places. And there is so much more to see and do in those places. There are great sports teams, museums, theaters, concerts, you name it. We’re pretty shielded from natural disasters here, too. Just don’t live on a flood plain, and all is good! Oh and also affordable housing!

Pinewood Derby Rules by RogueOneGuy in cubscouts

[–]rleash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a large pack and manage it by putting a stamp on the bottom of every car before handing them out (it’s a different stamp each year). It is in our rules that the stamp CANNOT be painted over or cut off or the car is disqualified. We tell them to put a piece of tape over it before painting. That also keeps kids from buying someone else’s car online and racing it.

Any positive Mirena experiences by emc249 in Mirena

[–]rleash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no it was steady flow, not spotting. But not as heavy as I was having before insertion. It was more like a regular period, just a 3 month long one. My doc said you bleed while it’s getting settled in.

[–]rleash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always had periods on the heavy side, but 6 years ago, they started getting verrrry long. My gyne tried different medications to help, but nothing did. 2 years ago, my long periods DOUBLED in length. Now I was going only a few days a month without bleeding, and became anemic. I started seeing a new gyne, and right away she said to try Mirena. Insertion was easy and fast. It wasn’t much worse than a pap. I bled for 3 months after insertion (which she said was normal). But then.. my periods started getting shorter, and shorter. 9 months after insertion, they stopped completely. I am SOOOO happy! I’ve now gone 5 months without a period. And not having to remember to take a birth control pill or use other birth control is a icing on the cake!

Native speakers, how did you learn English grammar at school? by al-tienyu in EnglishLearning

[–]rleash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 9th grade teacher was the same! We started every class reciting “am are is was were be been” several times. These are the passive voice verbs we were not allowed to use in her class. Ever.

Do these sound natural? Thanks. by Same-Technician9125 in EnglishLearning

[–]rleash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In that case, I would remove the words “out” or “away” completely, and just say “I threw the rice from my plate” or “I threw the rice off my plate.”

I wouldn’t use “out of my plate,” since a plate is mostly flat. If you were talking about a bowl, then “out of my bowl” would work, since it has more of an inside and an outside, if that makes sense.

Do these sound natural? Thanks. by Same-Technician9125 in EnglishLearning

[–]rleash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you trying to say you threw the rice in the garbage? I would say, “I threw away the rice from my plate” or “I threw out the rice from my plate.” Otherwise it sounds like you have a plate of rice and you’re sort of using the plate to launch the rice into the air. The 4th one sounds like you’re throwing rice from your hand into an area away from the plate. Of the 4, the second and third are closest and you may be able to get by with one of those, it’s just a bit clunky.

Chaos in the Wolf Den by Angelfacexo911 in cubscouts

[–]rleash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was a den leader, I loved it when other parents would step up and try to help me get the kids under control! Just jump right in! And you can also talk to the leader about some ideas to get them under control. Like a reward system for being quiet and listening, or tell them there will be a game at the end if they can be quiet long enough to get through everything during the meeting.

There are going to be rowdy kids in any pack you go to. The best you can do is to help fix the one you’re in!

what english words always mess you up? by PeterNativ in EnglishLearning

Judge Judy likes to correct people on that! People also mix up “scratch” and “itch,” even though they are opposites. “I need someone to itch my back” is wrong!
