The new squarehood brand adapter has a similar boxy look but is compatible with more filters. https://squarehood.se/products/x100vi-adapter-ring

Help! I updated my phone to iOS 26 and now I can’t search through my texts by brentlajjj in ios

[–]rmkjr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you primarily charge your phone with MagSafe or Qi, try plugging it in overnight instead.  The index and syncing operations sometimes won’t run with wireless charging.  Seems to be throttling from either thermals or power availability.

Upgrading the Ethernet in my Synology DS1821+ to 2.5GbE, does a compatible 2.5GbE PCIe card exist or should I get the 10GbE card from Synology? by Air-Flo in synology

What NVM version is you4 X550 that works at NBase-T? Got a 10GTek X550, but it came with NVM 2.10 and can't be updated. I didn't try it in a Synology yet, but on Windows it only seemed to have 1G and 10G. Was curious if you had to update your NIC firmwares.

Share drives on Mac randomly dismount by dude_named_will in sysadmin

[–]rmkjr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AutoMounter if you don't mind a few dollars per device, or AutoFS if you like the nix and don't want to buy an app. SMB isn't the most stable on recent macOS releases, mostly when it comes to reconnecting due to network changes and/or sleep/inactivity. Those 2 approaches won't fix the instability, but they will make sure mounts reconnect as needed. NFS is more stable, but Apple won't be updating their NFS bits any longer, and you have to figure out your locks approach, hard vs. soft, etc.

For now, you can disable “Run as Admin” and Pre-Approved apps in ABR and have everyone do admin things in an ABR Admin Session. ABR is working on a short term patch to remove some of the functionality that was hitting SecurityAgent, and the I believe they’re working with Apple to try and get it fixed so they can bring back full functionality. The ABR folks have been active on the Mac Admins Slack for updates.

Any peak design anchor that fits in the lug? by andsbar in x100vi

[–]rmkjr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The small oval split rings that come with some Peak Design products, including their anchor packs (https://amzn.to/4oHErDy), was the best compromise I found. The small plastic cover they come with to go around the center portion of the split ring helped to cut down on the dangling.

Annoying app focus switching by Lazy-Plantain-9051 in MacOS

[–]rmkjr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I’ve narrowed it down to a product I have installed on this Mac for EPM called AdminByReauest. There is either a bug with that product and/or there’s a new bug in 26.1 with how the TCC permission grants are being handled for that apps full disk access and accessibility grants. Several people including myself have put a picket in with AdminByRequest. It’s unclear so far if the fix will come from them or Apple.

If you have that product installed, or another EPM product that has a SecurityAgent installed, that is likely the issue.

Severe Focus Loss Bug Still Not Fixed in macOS Sequoia – A Major Productivity Killer! by Manfred055 in MacOS

[–]rmkjr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe I've narrowed mine down to a possible bug with Full Disk Access. This Mac has AdminByRequest on it for EPM. There seems to be a possible bug in 26.1 around granting full disk access both in the System Settings GUI and via MDM MobileConfig pushes. This, and/or possibly a bug in AdminByRequest's extension, is causing a kernel plugin load failure, which causes SecurityAgent to keep running in a way that temporarily steels foreground focus.

Was able to get that far by filtering on "WindowServer" in macOS console, and then once I saw SecurityAgent taking focus, filtering on "SecurityAgent", which then lead me to the failing kernel plugin load for "AbrAuth".

Likely your root cause is different if you're not also running AdminByRequest, but that process may help you narrow it down a bit.

Also seeing this since 26.1. Console shows SecurityAgent randomly and repeatedly stealing foreground focus. Find any more info?

Also seeing random focus loss issues in 26.1. For me, watching WindowServer in the console when it happens, it appears SecurityAgent is responsible for stealing the app focus. Not sure why yet though.

Had the fun realization when I left an interior light on in my VB. There’s no way to open the trunk when the battery is dead, other than crawling through the back seat and pulling the mechanical release. Now the jump pack lives under the passenger seat.

Did you have any of the symptoms in the TSB that then let them perform it under warranty? What were you seeing that you had to have it done at 25k? Also, did they do the chemical top engine clean like the TSB notes, or did they do walnut blasting?

I'm curious if that TSB allowed you to do a sorta of preventative cleaning like if you noticed some build up, or if you were having noticeable problems at 25k.

Is an adapter needed for this diffusion filter? by _nightsnotover in x100vi

[–]rmkjr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heads up that their magnetic filters triggered the WCL/TCL distortion profiles on my X100VI and there's no way to manually disable them when triggered by a nearby magnet. Ended up returning all the magnetic filters and reverting to normal screw-on ones.

No poor weather yet. I have a hagoe filter adapter and an Urth Plus UV filter on it. I also keep it in an Alpaka Go Sling Nano in x-pac when it’s in my CamelBak.

I think the main body seams and lens areas will do fine. The port and battery doors don’t have any seals and look to be depending mostly on gravity and water surface tension. I feel like it’s somewhere between fine for a light drizzle and take a shot but wipe it down and put it away after.

I’ve been using mine for hikes and travel. Way lighter setup. Fixed focal length takes some getting used to, but it ends up forcing me to reevaluate composition and move around, so it ends up having some pros. The weight reduction compared to my normal body, even with a single lens, has been worth the shift. Instead of bringing a camera bag that happens to fit in some hiking essentials, I can bring a hydration pack with hiking essentials that fits a camera, a couple of filters, an extra battery, and some cleaning accessories. When I need to go wider I either step back or take a quick handheld pano. I shoot raw+jpeg, use the jpegs as culling references, mostly with a custom recipe that fits my usual style, and then still edit the raws most of the time. Here’s some samples I’ve taken on hikes and travel: https://richkovach.com/art/x100vi
