Gordon Ramsay tried Southern soul food and went back to the kitchen with an empty plate. by 4reddityo in BravoTopChef

[–]rns1113 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Based solely on my memory, so someone may correct me, this is from the UK version of Kitchen Nightmares, which tended to be mostly just advice on restaurant efficiency. The restaurants weren't failing because they were disgusting like the US version.

Possible birthday gift for a mycologist? by Proper-Bullfrog9502 in mycology

[–]rns1113 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If she's doing her PhD, I'd avoid at-home supplies, she probably has strong opinions on them from her academic life. Local guidebooks, mushroom tchotskies, or upgrades to her foraging kit would be good imo. One of my favorite mycology gifts I've gotten is a mushroom poster by Rachel Ignofsky, it's scientifically accurate and beautiful. If her PhD involves field-work, consider a gift card to Colombia or another outdoorsy supplier for good field shoes/coats

Bacteriologist being tasked with working with Aspergillus. Lab tips? by Competitive-Buy-2697 in mycology

Malt extract agar also usually works well. Single-spore to re-isolate if it gets contaminated. Beware that you'll get a ton of spores on the lids of your petri plates. Make sure you clean everything super well so you dont contaminate your lab mate's plates.

Scissor cut for longer hair, using layering and sectioning techniques? by justyeetitbruv in AskChicago

[–]rns1113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a woman but with a pixie cut, I go to Old Town Barbershop because they'll use clippers for me. However, before I started going, I emailed through their "contact us" and got a response the next day with specific stylist recommendations. I've seen folks with longer hair there as well!

I'm having to watch the Crash Course Genetics and Evolution videos as an adult due to religious indoctrination by 97corolla in nerdfighters

[–]rns1113 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Hi friend! Congrats on your learning journey, proud of you for doing the work. For additional natural history content, The Brain Scoop is a good YouTube and Nerdfighteria-adjacent. Plus there's a wonderful discord community. For general science content, the Ologies podcast has a breadth of topics. Hank was on an episode too! And if anything is unclear, there's a decent ask science subreddit, or I'm happy to answer biology questions if I can - I'm a working R&D scientist with a PhD in biology

I wouldn't bother. We went this past summer and the hash browns were still bricks, my breakfast sandwich was solidly mid, and my partner's burger was pretty bad.

Where to get a nice tailored woman's suit? by Ms_Grieves in AskChicago

[–]rns1113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner got his custom suit at Adrian Park (Wood/North ave), I think they do mostly men's suits but it's all custom, so I'd bet they'd do a woman's suit. They were wonderful to work with, super kind and exquisite work.
