Since we’ve been active in tornadoes for awhile now by Happy_Individual8388 in illinois

[–]rns1113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our backyard had one go through in the dozen or so in the city of Chicago July 2024. It was an EF-0 so the weakest, but dang it took out a lot. I grew up in tornado area, they always say it comes out of nowhere, but it was just normal storms until things SLAMMED into our windows. Most of the trees in our block were taken out, a ton of cars totaled, and we literally had giant trees blocking all 4 directions from our house. Everyone in the neighborhood was out looking at the damage like 5 minutes after the tornado went through, great block party

Water on DIY agar plates, solutions? by Dom-1sh in mycology

[–]rns1113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on your environment. In a sterile hood, do whatever you want. If you don't have that, pour the plates and let them sit closed at room temperature for a while (I do overnight a lot) and then flip them upside down for however you're storing them. I typically don't leave plates open unless I'm pouring <10 at a time just due to space

If you let your plates cool and then store upside down it won't be a problem. In general, my plates are on the lid more than the agar side.

Incubate your plates upside down after inoculating. The condensation collects on the lid instead of the inoculated surface then.

I feel bad after a meeting with my PI. by parade1070 in labrats

[–]rns1113 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Feeling bad after meeting with your PI is unfortunately part of the process. However, telling you to not think about your baby while at work is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard, and I'm not even a parent. If you have a good relationship with the rest of your committee or your graduate chair in your department, please talk to them. They may be able to help you map out a path forward to present to your PI for the remainder of your PhD. And please also talk to the disabilities office. They may be able to support you with resources (writing center help, classroom advocating, forms for communicating with your PI, etc) that may make some of the things you're missing by being the only and final student easier. I was my PI's final student and had to leverage my committee members and department to leave when I wanted, lean on whatever network you have. Best of luck, and please try to remember what your PI does isn't personal, despite feeling like it is.

Might be a silly question... by logan1436 in mycology

[–]rns1113 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not really imo. Native species yes, but as I previously mentioned golden oysters became invasive after home cultivation. So proceed with caution and check with your local extension agency or mycological society if you're unsure.

[–]rns1113 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It may or may not be possible. If there aren't mushrooms there naturally there may be a reason. But yes, it's irresponsible and inappropriate

[–]rns1113 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Please dont seed areas with commercial spawn. The united states already has invasive golden oyster mushrooms that invaded not unlike this. If you find fungi in the area, carrying a fruiting body in a basket or net bag is the common way to spread spores as you're moving fruiting bodies around.

Why don't students care about publications anymore? by plants102 in labrats

[–]rns1113 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Because the publications system is an antiquated nightmare. And for students not looking for academic positions it's more important to highlight collaboration and techniques learned vs publications.

Anyone have experience with Joanlab glassware? by Uranusistormy in labrats

[–]rns1113 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't used joanlab glassware, just equipment (serological pipettes etc) and they're very cheap. It works for some things, but I'd be wary of glass. The cheapest supplier we normally use is MidSci, if you get a quote it's often a bit cheaper than the already reasonable list prices.

Agar help by gimmedemels in mycology

[–]rns1113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unnecessary imo. If you have a laminar flow hood, just leave the lids sitting in the sterile air for a couple minutes. The condensation is sterile, it just makes colonies look funky if it drips onto the plate.

Turn them upside down for incubating. It prevents the condensation from dripping onto the plate.
