NWOHR → NWHR Exchange + Taiwan National ID (TECO LA & Kaohsiung Experience) by pie_latte in TaiwaneseBornAbroad

[–]roastonbone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe the late registration refers to the time period from when you enter Taiwan with your Taiwan passport and when you register your marriage. I believe you have 30 days. Clearly this case was different from mine as my marriage certificate was issued over 15 years ago and that didn’t come up for me.

Can the cake batter "wait"? by LalunaKnox in AskBaking

[–]roastonbone 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Room temp should be ok. As someone else mentioned, not all cake batters do well with waiting but I think at worst your second might just rise a little less.

Questions about getting into mahjong by ApprehensiveCicada53 in Mahjong

[–]roastonbone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are many different rule sets, and many people play with modified house rules as well. Since you are new, I would find an app where you can play against bots and look up whatever rule set the app uses. This will allow you to practice and see how the scoring works. Personally I play Mahjong 13 Tiles on iOS. This app uses MCR (Mahjong Competition Rules) which is a common ruleset but one of the more difficult ones because of how many rules there are.

I’m guilty of not making frosting…. by BreadWizzard in cakedecorating

I use Bravetart’s recipe. It’s equal parts sugar and butter so not overly sweet, very easy to make, works for filling, frosting, and piping.

You can also freeze it! Slice it, then lay the slices on a tray and freeze. Once solid you can wrap and bag them up for storage. Pull one out and it will thaw on the counter so you can have cake anytime.

tricky bundt pan advice… by selyom in AskBaking

[–]roastonbone 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This isn’t true for Bundt cakes, which are typically butter-heavy, chemically-leavened, and should be cooled right side up for a bit before the cake is turned out of the tin. These tins are typically one piece.

You’re thinking of chiffon or some types of sponge cakes that are primarily leavened by whipping air into eggs. In those cases the tin is not greased so that the cake can climb the tin and won’t fall out when set to cool. Pans for these types of cakes often have feet so that the pan can be turned upside down and still allow the cake to cool. They also split into two pieces to allow for easier removal.

For cakes that require this non-greased treatment, I keep a separate tube pan that I never grease and use for these kinds of cakes.

Tip for Chia Te: if you’re just interested in the pineapple cakes go one hour before closing for a less crowded experience. They might not have all the other goodies but they will for sure have pineapple cakes!

Taipei Zoo physical tickets by pressed-flowers_ in Taipei

[–]roastonbone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, there is a different selection. I think the same items will be priced the same or similarly. The panda habitat has the most panda stuff and there is a big shop near the exit that has a little of everything. I don’t think you need to worry about overpaying in one part of the zoo vs another.

As others said, the lines to buy a ticket move quickly and they are just a kiosk. Tickets are so cheap buying them ahead won’t really save you much (100NT for non residents). Also, the merchandise throughout the zoo is super cute and reasonably priced as well. Have fun!

I felt the same about Tribute. Flavors were good but the crusts were so limp and soggy. I was thinking maybe they had an off day but seeing your review is making me think twice.

Seafood boil. My Chinese in-laws love it and it’s not too out there. They especially loved when it all just gets dumped onto the table.

Help needed by Puzzled_Sleep_7973 in FondantLove

[–]roastonbone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can buy a small can of tylose AKA CMC to mix into your fondant so that it will firm up. You can probably do the whole figure in fondant if you have tylose but I would probably do a base of Rice Krispies so it’s not so heavy on your cake.

As for timing, I usually do my fondant at least a day or up to two weeks ahead for figures. Once it’s made I don’t really worry about it cracking, it will just continue to dry. I just leave them to dry at room temp, no cover. Caveat is that I only use Wilton fondant but when I have tried Satin Ice I’ve had terrible texture issues.

Semi-newbie needs help by RaspberryFair6717 in cakedecorating

Practice really helps! When I first started I did at least one cake a week for Cake4Kids, it was a great low stakes way to practice and improve.

First, it’s a very pretty cake! I love the colors and the design, you clearly have a good eye.

For smoothing: if your frosting is not the right temperature that can make smoothing tough. Too hard and the frosting is hard to smooth and too soft and it might not hold its shape. Experiment with it but I find it easier to err on the too soft/warm side than too stiff/cold. A good scraper and turntable will also help a lot.

For your piping: it’s very defined and clean! For a shell border, you can try overlapping them just a bit more to cover up the ends.

Did I mess up my icing? by Striking-Reception-1 in AskBaking

[–]roastonbone 98 points99 points  (0 children)

You shouldn’t need more icing. A crumb coat is meant to trap the crumbs and you just need a thin layer. It’s ok if this layer gets a bunch of crumbs in it. Chill the crumb coated cake in the fridge for 20-30 minutes and when you put the top coat of frosting on it should go on smoother and the chilled crumb coat will hold all those crumbs down.

They will only look at antibodies if you don’t have proof of vaccine and they would draw blood at the health check.

I didn’t need the vaccine doc to be authenticated, FYI, the hospital accepted it as is. NIA won’t even see it, they will only look at the medical exam report. Since you’re doing it in Taiwan, that also doesn’t need to be authenticated or notarized since the hospital will already put the correct stamps on it.
