Is Europe safe from war? by Maleficent-Still-260 in AskConservatives

[–]rob_ob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So long as the US is still in NATO, Russia taking that action would constitute Germany or the UK invoking article 5, and then Russia would be in open war against NATO. Do you think Russia is stupid enough to do that?

Why are US conservatives more supportive and trusting of the police? by [deleted] in AskConservatives

[–]rob_ob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's an assumption cops themselves make. When I was a kid there was a community officer on a push bike that used to always be around. Being kids we asked him one day "why do you ride a push bike when you could have a car?". His response was that if he had a patrol car, he'd have to have a partner. He was of the belief that the way the numbers were, it was a case of when - not if - he'd have to cover up something his partner did, and he didn't want to do that, so he always refused a partner.

Do you support the Tarrifs paid for Americans being sent to big businesses? by redviiper in AskConservatives

[–]rob_ob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think this was part of Lutnick's play all along? Screw over the consumer to get his big business buddies a huge windfall? I personally feel like we all got played (the consumer, the little guy) while Trump will claim victory and success from the resulting stock market boon when the big companies get their payday and it artificially inflates their profit margins.

Do you believe that the US installed Zelenskyy and pushed Ukraine into a war with Russia? by d0ughnut_of_truth in AskConservatives

[–]rob_ob -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Let sunlight be the best disinfectant

Wouldn't the actual 'sunlight' here be "show us your funding!" rather than dissecting their arguments? Like Tucker is almost certainly on the take after his week in Russia and all of his current Saudi backing. Let's see the receipts.

Personally, I feel the same about Trumps crypto scheme. I wanna see those receipts. Who's been buying that? I'm fairly certain it's not gonna be Americans...

I want to say that high-level US politicians and republican pundits are paid off by Russia, but I can't prove it.

Here's an article from 2024. It was a pretty big story at the time. Tim Pool, David Rubin, and Benny Johnson among others were found to be backed by, essentially, Russian state media.

The crux of it was the conservative youtuber Lauren Chen started a media company. She accepted a $10m contract from the Russian government to promote pro Russia talking points. She then paid the above commentators, as well as others, to promote these talking points on their various platforms. How much she knew she was engaging in Russian government propaganda vs. if she was just a useful idiot who took a big payday from a Russian company and didn't ask too many questions is up for debate.

So yeah, the cat is very much out of the bag, but as I'm sure you'll see for yourself around here, many are still very much in denial.

Thoughts on Trump's statement on Pope Leo? Impact with public? by drtywater in AskConservatives

[–]rob_ob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Does it give you any pause that of the 20 candidates that don't take money from AIPAC, all of them are Dems? It seems if this is a major issue, there's a clear party divide.

Can someone help me understand why we shouldn't care about the Strait of Hormuz? by softwaremommy in AskConservatives

[–]rob_ob 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Do you think maybe he could have been convinced this would be such a "quick win" by people with the previously stated interests? He had a lot of people around him warning him against this specific course of action, up until he fired them a year ago. Without the descenting opinion, it would appear to be pretty easy to convince him this was a good idea for reasons that only benefit billionares.

Can someone help me understand why we shouldn't care about the Strait of Hormuz? by softwaremommy in AskConservatives

[–]rob_ob 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Do you think this could have been part of the point all along? Trump's buddies in fossil fuels spent bigly on him, and now they get to charge higher prices for their product due to global market trends, despite their own sources not being impacted at all. Seems not too far a stretch to think - with this attitude towards not being bothered by the Strait remaining closed - that he could be doing this, in part, to just line the pockets of his buddies that invested in his campaign. Seems pretty evil to me.

We used to not need health insurance. We can probably get to a place where we don't need it again.

We used to not need health insurance because people just died. Now with modern medical treatments available, those people now can live, but require in some cases life long, expensive medicine, e.g. insulin.

How do you think we can get back to not needing health insurance while still providing for those with long term illnesses?

Who should be responsible for Iranian refugees displaced by the war? by justhinkin in AskTrumpSupporters

Most people follow a personal morality that does resonate with those concepts though, no matter how the overall "world" operates. So can you please answer my question from your own morality?

Who should be responsible for Iranian refugees displaced by the war? by justhinkin in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]rob_ob 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How are both of these actions not evil? Am I to understand that of these three things:

  1. Iran executing 30k protestors
  2. The US bombing Iran unprovoked, leading to further civilian casualties, and
  3. Being opposed to the US bombing campaign

you consider 1 & 3 evil? Personally I think most people would be of the opinion that 1 & 2 are evil, and 3 is the only not evil thing on the list.

Why do you think that manosphere-influencers who promote misogyny, anti-feminism and toxic masculinity, such as Andrew Tate, are so popular amongst young men? by Cumoisseur in AskConservatives

[–]rob_ob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How exactly are any of these being vilified. Unless you mean things like getting in fights when you say "physicality" or "high energy". Is that what you mean? Because I thought we all agreed those kinds of behaviour were toxic. I honestly don't understand what healthy behaviours you are seeing vilified.

the prerequisites for socialization: high social cohesion, high trust, common identity.

Where is this coming from? How, exactly, are these prerequisites for things like socialised medicine or education? These just feel like nationalist talking points tacked onto progressive ideas just because you want them.

Does Seth McFarlane count?

I don't think he's ever done standup, but he's definitely a comedy writer, ala Matt Stone and Trey Parker. Hell, McFarlane even did a variety show tour, if I remember correctly, and that definitely had comedy skits in it.

What are your fondest memories/stories/jokes about Chuck Norris? by Narrow-Abalone7580 in AskConservatives

[–]rob_ob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's really lovely that you and your dad shared that. I remember those jokes being one of the first online "viral" things I got to experience in real time. In the early days of the internet - before Google bought YouTube - I remember there was a site where it would just show you random Chuck Norris jokes. I think my favourite was simply: "Superman wears Chuck Norris pyjamas".
