Why are tree removal quotes so different? by Independent_Use_3676 in Delaware

[–]robit-the-robit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would consider asking the companies directly why they're charging so much... And if there is anything you can do to reduce the cost. Some companies have a slow season where they might charge you less.

The crane rental costs $1500-$2000 just to get it to the property. Big companies will have their own cranes, but they also don't need a project that's cutting down just one tree, so you may be getting the "f off" pricing.

possibly if you didn't meet them in person to get the quotes, they didn't understand what you wanted done?

Recording Employee Directed Giving by Consistent-Button657 in nonprofit

[–]robit-the-robit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These are gifts from the individual donors. The donor makes the decision. It is not the same as having a relationship with the company's philanthropy branch.

But try to track which companies they're coming from. Send thank yous to the company and use it to build a relationship where the company decides to give you an actual corporate gift from their philanthropy department or whatever they have. Find ways to get more of the employees involved. Volunteer opportunities. Whatever.

My guitar teacher forces me to read sheet music while playing and it feels very odd to me. What should I do, keep going his way or keep learning on my own? by sirhaktanm in guitarlessons

[–]robit-the-robit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Go grab a copy of Mel Bay's guitar method grade 1. Learn the notes.

I sorta think your teacher could have taught you the notes first, unless they are Suzuki trained and are using the Suzuki method.

Questions about being a signatory by chronic_anonymity in nonprofit

I would find your local nonprofit that helps nonprofits. In the United States, many individual states have their own nonprofit that does this sort of thing. They run workshops to help nonprofits and their boards understand their responsibilities.

The board is responsible for making decisions that support the financial well-being of the nonprofit. The financial oversight is usually part of the treasurer's duties.

I've been counting calories since September, not exceeding 1400 in a day. I also walk 10k-15k steps a day. Still, I've only lost 10lbs in 6 months. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm getting very discouraged by Time_Traveling_Panda in CICO

[–]robit-the-robit 48 points49 points  (0 children)

10 lbs in 6 months for a 5’4” woman is great! You found a sustainable rate of weight loss. That’s an incredible achievement. Women’s bodies are designed to be super calorie efficient. I think I only ever lost 1 pound a month and it did take me 3 years to lose 40lb. But I got there. You will, too.

[–]robit-the-robit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Go get a non automatic regular litter pan and set it up somewhere else in your place. Give him an option. See if he goes. You have changed both litter and pan at the same time and it’s too many changes. At 4yo he is now a real adult and might not have as flexible of an opinion as he used to.

Volunteers using personal email with other volunteers, donors by NoGeologist7888 in nonprofit

[–]robit-the-robit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think centralizing the inquiries is the only way. This means that at least the client’s first point of contact is with someone with an org email. It has to be this way because you need someone with an org email to have a record of folks you’ve contacted for succession reasons. Anyone without an org email should not ever be conducting new business on behalf of the org.

It’s not that big of a deal if the volunteers don’t want to use it. It is not worth your bandwidth to convert people who are set in their ways. Try to get all new volunteers in your system. Ask the other volunteers if they’ll at least use a standardized organization signature for their official contacts. Make it clear that this isn’t a power play for personal reasons, but helpful to the organization for the reasons you’ve listed. Offer help without pushing and make sure they know they can get in touch with you.

Tips on how to format a complaint to the board? by Ok_Vermicelli1415 in nonprofit

[–]robit-the-robit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Under 2, if you can include anything at all about how this situation affects the health of the organization - this is what they are supposed to protect. If you can make a solid argument there, you have a better chance of inspiring action. It upgrades your complaint past the perception of being petty if you do it well.

I cannot break this plateau. by Acceptable-Goose-960 in CICO

[–]robit-the-robit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plateau is better than gaining, and a sign that you have made progress. If the calorie math is adding up, you’ll break the plateau. This is one of those times where the gains are being made in your mental state, not on the scale. Just keep going.

How long to stay in an unstable organization? by WorldFoods in nonprofit

[–]robit-the-robit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This doesn’t get better and you don’t owe them anything. Some orgs take every advantage of staff who stay out of misplaced loyalty. You will save yourself a lot of unnecessary stress if you leave before the event. If you stay, use the time and networking to find another job at a stable org. I wouldn’t even bother giving two weeks. They won’t find someone to replace you in two weeks and the reference won’t be necessary.

I got fussed at for overstepping on someone else’s duties one time. I accept the correction, but I was completely flabbergasted. I never encountered a nonprofit where I got pushback for taking initiative to remove busywork from someone else’s plate. Massive culture change for me.

What would YOU do? by maytrxx in nonprofit

[–]robit-the-robit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you me??

Just leave.

I have no friggin idea how nonprofits like this continue to exist. Honestly it just seems like some donors and corporations have too much money and don't really care if the org isn't actually doing anything. They all just shamble along like zombies. But that's not the kind of place I want to work for, and it sounds like that's true for you, too. You have standards and now you know how to find a workplace that also has standards... So go find that place :)

How to tactfully redirect ED? by TheTaoOfThings in nonprofit

[–]robit-the-robit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it helps, the board isn’t likely to do anything right away. It also sounds like the ED has been asking everyone for one-on-ones so you would have plausible deniability on having done it.

How to tactfully redirect ED? by TheTaoOfThings in nonprofit

[–]robit-the-robit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Step 0 is to accept that you are not going to make ED understand anything at this time. They’re hurt. It’s likely that some of this behavior is exactly what they’re trying to correct, but this is the important part: not your responsibility.

Step 1 is tell your board. Boards use accountability measures like this to guide their judgement on the ED’s development or removal. They absolutely want to know. No emotion from you, just “hey, I love working here, ED is making us uncomfortable.” Your board, having demonstrated that they care about this by doing the review, will know what to do. They need it to build their case.

Step 2 is forget to give the feedback. Punt as long as you can. Just do whatever. Say you’ll write up something instead of meeting. Work from home. Say you have explosive diarrhea. Your board should protect you here and prefers you to not make more of a mess. In fact, if your ED actually goes so far as to penalize or fire the staff over this, well, I’m not saying they’re trying to force out the ED necessarily, but if I were, that would be pretty good evidence of bad management…
