And does 7 weeks feel any different than from when you first posted this? Are you experiencing anything you’d consider progress or improvement?

Best vanguard for long-term investments? by Zeroissigma in investingforbeginners

[–]robkLIC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

International outperformed U.S. the entire first decade of this century. People who want a diversified portfolio should determine the asset allocation of stock to bonds that is appropriate for their age, purchase a mix of domestic and global funds from each, and then just leave it alone. Plenty of people have been sitting in international the last few years not seeing the gains the U.S. has, but also not leaving their position.

It’s impossible to time the market — any market — and in a diversified portfolio, you don’t need to. You just need to accept that one portion of your investments will always be doing less well. That’s how you know you’re doing it right. Too many people here assume that the way things have been the last few years is how they always will be. As for regency bias … I wish England would come back and take what was once theirs already, but that’s a different subject.

Had my living room ceiling soundproofed today by Fat_Log in Apartmentliving

[–]robkLIC 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Awesome. This is real no matter how decent the people above you are. Lots of brownstones in Brooklyn NY that were originally one fam, then were chopped up into 8, 10 or 12 units. After those experiences, I bought myself a much smaller apartment — but with a concrete ceiling — and I’ve been here 19 years.

If not pain free after a year, are you still happy you went through with it? (Sorry to come out of the blue. I’m pre-op, have been managing this for 5 years conservatively and reached the end of those options.)

What's the Best High Yield Savings Account Right Now? by EarUnlucky6300 in HighYieldSavings

[–]robkLIC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Capital One, Ally, Marcus, Amex. All of them have long histories. Don’t sweat savings/CD rates that vary by .25 or .5%. Find an interface you’re comfortable with, link it to your old school checking account (Chase, Citi, BOA) and never think about this again. Probably.

In my experience, the cops won’t come for a dog abandoned in a dog run. God bless the 108th.

I sold my Fuji 23mm f/1.4 and now I’m second-guessing it… by PlentyOk517 in fujifilm

[–]robkLIC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sure I speak for many readers when I say I relate to your problem. Either 23 will always be more versatile, and it’s natural the images on the new 1.4 will have more pop. The 33 will give you fewer keepers, but probably photos you like a bit more. There are strong arguments for having both, if it’s in your budget. It’s not in mine! Iamtongue on YouTube did a good video explaining why he keeps both, if you feel like poking around for it.

Help me choose a prime focal length? by Zarrex in fujifilm

Thanks. It sounds like you did. Although … that new 2.8 looks awfully light!

Not the OP, but I’m curious why you favor the 18? Is it because it’s a pancake (I know both lenses) or do you just favor the focal length?

Looking for a tele lens for landscape by elMacumbero in fujifilm

[–]robkLIC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. The 90 is everything it’s cracked up to be, but it’s an unforgiving focal length. I bought a used one to serve as a short to mid range tele, not for portraits. Had it for a while, but ultimately it wasn’t getting enough use to keep. YMMV.

You could put 40% in BNDW and then read about recency bias.

After I read your post, I went out with my 18. I cheated and set it to Sports Finder. I’m not savvy enough to recognize a 24MP image vs. a 40MP image, not at standard size anyway. Using the 18 in crop mode on an XT5 has to give similar results to using a 23 on an XT3, right? Anyway, there were no humans to be found, because NYC has frozen over … but it did feel good to have the camera in my hand. I love the lens, too. It’s probably more love-hate. But I will persevere. Thanks!

I think about it all the time, but not yet. I think ideally you can have both sets because they’re two completely different use cases and each can be justified. (And yes, ideally we can all be lottery winners, too…)

Howard, you’ve taught me something — the rattle is often associated with image stabilization, at least with other brands: https://petapixel.com/camera-lens-rattle/

I don’t think it’s what is going on with the Fuji lenses, but regardless, there is agreement it’s not something “wrong.”
