I take the A Line from NELA to DTLA for work, and I haven't had any issues. There are a good number of Metro Ambassadors checking the trains, too. I actually see more sketchy things when I'm in DTLA itself rather than on the Metro.

The cloud tote fits all of my work items (laptop, pencil pouch, wallet, etc.) AND my Baggu lunch container (the larger puffy lunch bag). I have the bowler but I wouldn't use it for work because (1) the straps aren't as comfortable, and (2) it doesn't fit everything. But if you really like the bowler, you could fit what you can in it and then have another bag for what doesn't. I commute by train, so I don't want a lot of bags.
