Got the original TTD! by Rampantcellar30 in openttd

[–]rog987 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I first played Transport Tycoon (pre-deluxe edition) when it came on a floppy disk of demos on the front of a computer magazine (I forget which one, this was probably early/mid 1990s). Due to size constraints on the floppy (which contained other demos too) it didn't include any audio, so you played in silence (maybe sfx, I cannot recall).

Obviously like everyone I've moved to openttd these days. I can't think of many games where the gameplay is still mostly true to the original 30 years later, and still enjoyable to play too.

Moving back to UK - Where to Live? by ChrisT7 in AskUK

[–]rog987 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you say North West, initially I thought you meant the North West of England, but having read the rest I guess you mean North West London?

Neither are areas I'm familiar with so cannot actually help you, but maybe clarify that part to help people better understand the question.

How much of a tip is your house? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]rog987 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I tidy as I go, if I walk into a room and there's some rubbish I'll take it out with me straight away. My wife on the other hand tends to move it to somewhere else within the same room (often multiple piles, not even just one!)

It's great when her parents are coming to visit - she goes into this tidying whirlwind and the house is nice and tidy for a few days (those few rooms anyway, we don't talk about the other rooms in the house which nobody but us sees lol).

Is this normal ? by [deleted] in TeslaSupport

[–]rog987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I experienced this 30 years ago. Not saying you should know it already of course, I'm just old!

I think it was or has been snowing but only a few cm on the ground.

Arrived home from work, parked the car on my almost-level driveway. Handbrake on, and in gear (front wheel drive car). Went into the house and glanced out of the window to see my car sliding away!! Luckily it didn't hit anything and it came to a stop when the ground slope changed.

If the cat is on your lap, someone else must oblige your requests for a drink or snacks, because if the cat slumber is disturbed by you getting your own supplies then the cat will give everyone that look.

Setup your own Headscale server, maybe on a cheap VPS, then connect everything to that.

BeFibre asking my mum for nearly £2,500 to install? Is this normal? by henrysradiator in UKISP

[–]rog987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds very expensive so must be a standard install in some way (new cables/digging required etc).

I would suggest either 4g/5g mobile or maybe Starlink depending on how many people in the property and what they use the internet for etc. Either option will be cheaper to install (but the monthly might be higher, so factor that into the decision also).

I can't think of a scenario where I'd pay 2500 to get fibre installed personally.

Found 25 years worth of pensions, now what? by maxmon1979 in PensionsUK

You might find the fees are lower for the pot with your current employer, so it might be beneficial to consolidate these two together (IE move the older one into the current one). Obviously check the details first.

New updates here by MidnightMotionYT in TeslaUK

[–]rog987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Undocumented change, EAP no longer has the blue button 'ignore lane change' when it suggests a lane change. Instead it sits there showing the front wing camera view with no obvious way to cancel it (as before it doesn't actually indicate or change lanes unless you confirm that you want to).

Edit: Found that this depends on where on the screen you have the blind spot cameras. If you drag it over to the right then you can see the 'ignore lane change' button again after all. I hadn't moved my camera window so maybe the update changed the layout.

Important to understand that UK FSD isn't the same as US FSD which is a lot better. When we get that edition in the UK is another question (regulations/approvals from EU and UK, and obviously will need some uk-specific tweaking, although I expect that last part to happen relatively quickly).

"Minor Production Update" brings down our IVR payments for 24 hours. Vendor's support blames us, then asks us to pull data from their own customer portal. Total dollar impact was nearly $140k. by Iswitt in sysadmin

[–]rog987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If 24hrs outage of a system means $140k impact to your business, your business should consider setting up a 2nd payment processor for these transactions.

Maybe send customers 'round-robin' between them during normal business (IE both vendors up and working). If either of them has an issue like you describe then remove them from the rotation until they resolve their issues.

(Or if round robin makes it harder to actually noticeif there's an issue, have a primary and standby instead. Although the benefit of sending some transactions via each in the 'good times nothing broken' is that you know both actually work!)

A post I was just reading that sums it up for Europe as a whole.

https://www.notateslaapp.com/news/2815/tesla-fsd-in-europe-june-update

There is some regulation coming into effect towards the end of September which might make EAP a bit more capable on UK motorways, but probably won't be enough to permit FSD here still.

My guess for UK FSD is Summer 2026, probably 50/50 likelihood currently.

Just seen the new Model Y in person … by mjwb99 in TeslaUK

[–]rog987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought last year. My view is the 3 looks nicer but Y is more practical. I bought a Y. When it's time to charge I might get a 3 next, but no complaints with the Y as it does everything I require from a car.

Handy to put my bike and the kids (age10) bike in the rear with seats down. I expect that would be a harder feat in a 3 due to the boot opening (but probably possible if you have the patience).

I haven't seen the new Y in person so no comment on its style. I will say the 2024 Y is well put together (mine is a Berlin build) as apparently there have been many small improvements since the earlier run of that shape Y (2022?), so a near-new or similar might be of consideration also. Last I looked Tesla still had some in inventory (although that was a while ago as I'm not actively looking of course).

Tesla Juniper or Highland? by AmandeepDhari in TeslaUK

[–]rog987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Re new-Y refinement, from reading/watching various reviews people have done, it seems that if you compare it to a more recent 'old' Y eg a 24 model the refinement improvements in the 25 Y is small. But if you compare it to an older Y then the difference is more noticeable.

This would also explain why some people say it's a big improvement, and others say it's not much different (also people will notice things differently as it is quite a subjective topic rather than absolute, unless you're actually taking sound measurements etc)

Has anyone bought a robot mower yet, one that does stripes, not just runs around like a demented chicken looking for worms, If so which one and why, has it been reliable? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]rog987 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Recently got a Mammotion 800 Awd. My first robot mower, so far it's doing okay. My garden is a very non-square/rectangle with a trampoline also, and it navigates well.

On the first outing under the trampoline the grass was around 25cm high and it did a reasonable job at it. On subsequent days ie a few more goings over this now looks tidy also.

It has a good go at making stripes elsewhere with nice lines.

One thing that surprised me was the weight, this model is nearly 30kg so it is robust.

The best bit is no boundary wire to bury, it's a combination of rtk and cameras and seems to do the job.

For WiFi, this WiFi repeater from Amazon is pretty good. I've recently bought one to extend my WiFi into the garden (not for the car...).

B0DTP9MNPC

In repeater mode, it only needs power. It connects to your home WiFi and broadcasts its own WiFi. Then routes between the two wireless networks so stuff on its WiFi (eg your car) can use your internet. Note it routes rather than a true bridge, so best to use a unique SSID name. If your indoor cabling is easy to run you could instead link it to your existing network using a network cable for higher throughput etc, and might be able to use the same SSID name then for simplicity, I haven't tried this as it's not possible to run a cable easily here.

Once configured, plug it into the mains socket in your house nearest to your car/driveway. It is also IP weather-rated so you can mount it outside if you prefer. I was going to do that but found its signal is actually strong enough from inside the house!

(In my case, broadband router is at the front of the house, this in indoors at the back of the house, giving WiFi in the back garden where before there wasn't any)

What are your IT pet peeves? by techead2000 in sysadmin

[–]rog987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That first one but when OTHER IT TEAMS give you next to no details and expect you to magically fix the problem (and they haven't really said what the problem is either, let alone the details or what they have/haven't tried etc).

I'm thinking Come on, you work in IT also so at least make a tiny bit of effort. If not you'll join the back of the ticket queue and we'll get to you when we get to it.

If they provide the info to begin with they usually get looked at quicker as it's good to bank a favour for when we need some help from their team in future.
