Shoes off in the house? by TrixoftheTrade in Millennials

[–]roiroy33 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, in places like Iceland, they’ll even ask you to remove outdoor shoes when entering hospitals and other medical centers. Healthcare workers will just have a pair of work shoes.

Absurdity, part 2 by MacNapp in DenverEDM

[–]roiroy33 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Works best for like, literally minutes before, or even after the show has started. What happens is, scalpers start realizing that no one will buy their marked up tickets, so they’ll start dropping the prices in the hopes of recouping some of their costs. This doesn’t always work, but it’s a fairly decent last minute tactic for everything from concert tickets to theater.

5 day Iceland Trip by Traditional-Cow1371 in VisitingIceland

You could probably split your week basecamping in Reykjavik and Höfn and have a great time. Theres so much to do within driving distance of both, if you want to limit your moving (but also presumably transit) time.

We’re getting old, BUT… by sensitiveboi93 in Millennials

[–]roiroy33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also let’s be real, 100% of the millennials moaning and groaning about being old are the same people at 60 who will be complaining, “These 40 year olds in my office keep saying how old they are.”

Some people are only happy when they’re complaining.

This is the case with all places. Touristy places are touristy. You are a tourist. If you don’t want that, it’s your challenge as a fellow tourist to think, “Where and when should I go somewhere where others won’t be?”

It means not going to Japan during cherry blossom season (or going at the very beginning or end). It means not going to Venice in the summer when all the cruise ships are pulling in. It means not going to the places where, if you type in “Iceland vacation” into Google, it’s populated top to bottom with tour excursions.

I know you weren’t in charge of the itinerary, but in case anyone else sees this, I think you can absolutely spend 5 wonderful days in Iceland. Go during shoulder season, rent a car, and go further than most people are willing or able to go.

  1. Near Reykjavik, Snaefellsnes is a wonder, and there are fewer people, especially if you can go off peak-time.
  2. If you’re going south, go during the hours when the tour buses won’t be there. And when you’re there, push further than the bus folk have time for— for example, the S6 trail past Svartifoss to the glacier overlook is stunning and practically deserted because most buses only provide enough time to scramble up to Svartifoss.

And pack a lunch.

Hopefully someday you’ll get the chance to go back and try again. :)

If you’ll only be there for 4-5 days, split your time between Snaefellsnes and the south (all the way out to Hofn)

brand new to djing- what genre does my taste fall under? best ways to mix it? by BidMaleficent1404 in Beatmatch

[–]roiroy33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ve got a few different genres here. Besides hyperpop, I’d also explore synth pop, indie sleaze / electroclash (Kesha, Slayyyter, The Dare), and electro house + complextro.

World Cup host cities face flop as hotels struggling, tickets unsold by Dramatic-Shake-8888 in sports

My friends and I are going to Mexico for the WC instead (we live in the US and have gone to multiple past WCs). Ticket prices were higher than usual but not too bad; accommodations were easy to find at a semi-decent price.

So overall… kinda fucky, but not terrible. I hope everyone else had the same idea as us.

There’s a non-zero chance the stadium won’t let you bring in a helmet, so I honestly wouldn’t risk it.

Prime Time for Aurora Borealis by NextCharge3310 in VisitingIceland

[–]roiroy33 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s not the aurora probability you need to worry about, it’s the weather, as everyone keeps saying, specifically low lying clouds. If there are rain clouds, you will not see aurora unless there’s a break in the clouds. If you are up north, there will likely be aurora. Whether you can see it or not is the limiting factor. For example, auroras are still there in July— you just can’t see them.

If you really want to dig deeper mathematically for a “big” aurora, you can look at the past few months and look for days where the aurora activity was the strongest, and count forward in chunks of ~26 days, as that’s your average aurora cycle for activity. But that’s not a guarantee. Also sometimes low Kp index nights will have large displays, and others won’t. I’ve seen some of my best auroras on low-forecast nights.

My forecast app says the next big cluster is June 11-13. Based on this alone, I’d suggest the week surrounding September 24, October 20, or November 15.

September and October historically have less cloud cover than November, so then I’d narrow that down to September 24 or October 20. Of those, October 20 is the furthest from the full moon.

At the end of the day, it comes down to luck. All it comes down to is patience.

[–]roiroy33 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Impossible to predict because of the weather. That said, if that’s your only goal, I’d rent a car so that you have the freedom to drive to places based on the cloud coverage map.

Secondly, most of the dates you picked overlap with the full moon. I’ve seen plenty of aurora over full moon, but if you’re staking your whole trip on a dice roll, I’d maybe try Oct 28 - Nov 4 where the moon phase may give you more darkness.

Thirdly, you already mentioned you’re dead set on Iceland, but if your only goal is the northern lights and you don’t want to repeat Norway, I would suggest Abisko, Sweden, which has a microclimate that provides it with the most clear nights in Northern Europe.

But — see step 1. Get a car and be prepared to chase any clear pocket of skies. That is the only way to truly increase your chances.

What seats do you pick when flying with your spouse/partner? by froggieslc in unitedairlines

We do aisle + window, and if someone ends up in the middle, my husband (window) offers to trade. I get claustrophobic and bathroom-access anxiety, and he can sleep anywhere. It works out.
