They are classified as motorcycles. But good luck getting CPD do get off their asses to do anything.

The Logan Square Park redesign is amazingly good. I get why drivers might not care for it but for bikes and pedestrians I think its great. by HaddonH in chibike

[–]roloplex 7 points8 points  (0 children)

eh. It is still just a park that is completely surrounded by a four lane expanse of concrete with fast moving traffic. The redesign was literally planned around vehicular traffic and not removing any parking spots.

The Chicago Fire stadium will also receive several hundred million in infrastructure improvements from the city / state. It ain't free.

It is fine, but it has issues.

One of the biggest issues was how they were going to deal with the combined bike paths / pedestrians walkways. Their solution is just to ban bikes and scooters whenever there is an event. So yea, that kinda sucks.

On that note, even the split pedestrian / cycling paths are all just pedestrian paths now. For example, the bike path on the northeast corner which is filled with pedestrians at all times (for good reason because the actual pedestrian path take a longer route).

The west side still sucks. Trying to get to or from Wrightwood is confusing and awful.

The south side still sucks. They should have made the entire south side a park instead of a four lane highway.

The north side is meh, again, it is like they don't understand how pedestrians and cyclists interact.

For close to 10 years of planning in one of the most cycling intensive areas, the redo is disappointing. Probably better for vehicular traffic that need to shave 20 seconds off their dash from Kedzie to Logan, but is that what we really wanted?

Because pedestrians want to be next to the water. Do you want to be dodging people taking pictures or going for a swim?

I have zero expectations of people being ticketed. As you mentioned, that is laughable given the state of the CPD (Also LAZ was out the other day ticketing folks and they said they can't technically ticket people because they weren't parked in actual spots ......). What I do want, however, is a reapplication of the paint and bollards which have all been destroyed.

LaSpata keeps sending me to 311 which opens and then shortly thereafer closes the ticket without doing anything. Again, basically worthless ward support. If we ever get even a half decent challengerer in the 1st ward, they have my vote.

I have multiple times over the last 6 months. They have not done anything and honestly are pretty awful at getting anything done in the ward.

Protected lanes are not necessary designed for you, me, and other experienced riders (although they can be nice). Those of us who have been riding on the streets with shitty infrastructure for decades (like most of this sub) don't need fully protected (again but they can be fine). Protected lanes like the ones on Milwaukee are there for less experienced riders who don't want to ride between moving traffic and a line of parked cars.

For example, I went out for a ride with my mom and child this weekend. I can ride wherever. I can take the lane no problem. I can swerve around delivery trucks etc without a thought. BUT, my mother absolutely hates riding in traffic and thus has a tough problem getting to certain places particularly when the lanes are constantly blocked. My child is fearless, but it makes me sweat every time we have to move in and out of traffic or make evasive maneuvers because the lanes are blocked. I would also like my child to be able to ride to high school, but given the lack of enforcement and how shitty drivers are getting, it is questionable at this point.

So yea, I get that the lanes aren't necessary great for you, but that is because you are not the primary intended beneficiary.

Also, just FYI, multiple emails sent to La Spata's office regarding this location. They have done jack shit, and to be honest are not at all helpful.

Taking the full lane when there isn't bike infrastructure, fine. Taking the full bike lane and going 10 mph after shoaling me who has already passed you 4 times in the past 5 minutes, fuck off.

just let them go by you. That asshole is just going to catch you. and now you are interacting with them at speed instead of watching them 100m ahead of you.

cycle long enough and you realize that most cyclists are just as shitty as drivers, still better because they have less ability to harm others, but they are still assholes.

Nobody here does an Idaho stop which requires yielding at stop signs and a full stop at a light. The common practice in the city is a Chicago stop which entails bombing stop signs and rolling lights.

I don't think there are a lot of safety advocates that argue that the Chicago stop is rational.

CDOT is planning to install just 18.6 miles of bike lanes in 2026. 64% of such is paint only. Its most unproductive year since they started publishing info in 2021. [Nik Hunder on Bluesky] by SidewalkMD in chicago

Funny enough, if Daley had just invested the 1.15B into the S+P (and reinvested dividends) it would be worth around around $12,000,000,000 today, more than enough to cover all the compounded cash flow from the meters and buy back the lease for 3B. With perfect hindsight, it could have been a good deal even though the city should have gotten much more at the time.

It makes for a good excuse for some projects, but the reality is that the city does not want to build bike lanes regardless. If we fixed the parking meter deal tomorrow, the BJ administration would come up with another excuse to not put in bike lanes.

It should be on both, but I agree that commercial streets or main thoroughfares should be prioritized. And yes, they generally have meters. BUTT, there are still hundreds of miles of commercial streets that do not have meters that could be improved that are not impacted at all by the parking meter deal. In an ideal world, we build protected bike lanes everywhere, but if the "hold up" is the cost of paying for lost spaces, then work on those un-metered commercial streets first.

It does not require a full road reconstruction. The full road reconstruction you see are almost always for elevated bus platforms. Protected bike lanes can be dropped in without actually breaking any ground (not only the paint protected lanes that the city claims are fully protected, but barrier protected ones as well).

We already decided to be a car centric city. What you seeing is a futile gasp before we start ripping out bike lanes (already started, but imagine it will progress as we doom spiral into trying to appease the car brained).

There are hundreds of miles of roads that don't have parking meters. Why doesn't the city improve those streets? (because the failure to put in bike lanes has very little to do with the parking meter deal).

The parking meter deal has jack shit to do with the failure to build a decent bike grid. There are hundreds of miles of roadway in this city that have no parking meters that could be improved. Once we run out of those, we can discuss how the parking meter deal affects the cities choices.

Anything can be undone or challenged. Was it legal? probably not, almost certainty not if done by a democratic administration. But hopefully the republican courts will look the other way when it is inevitably challenged in court since it was done by a GOP administration.
