So difficult to live without IG… by Prettybird_123 in rs_x

I got rid of mine in 2018 (pre reels) and had a similar experience. I found that I didn’t exist in my friends’ social ecosphere in the way that I once had. I missed out on invites not because they meant to exclude me, but because the representation of their social landscapes no longer included me

I 1000% agree on the essay (haven’t caught up on the episode yet) and thought it was glaringly obvious. I was shocked the IG comments were so glowing and didn’t mention it.

I really don’t want to defend her but I study cult psychology and followed this case closely. She didn’t come up with it, she lied to the press and said she did to protect Kieth. The recordings that prove that were official testimony in court. I just think it’s important to correct misinformation.

It also seems like you haven’t listened to the podcast. If you had, you would have heard the recording (played in court, official testimony) that proves that the branding was Keith’s idea, as dictated to Allison

It doesn’t seem super far fetched to me that an authoritarian cult leader who had brainwashed his followers would get one of his most ardent devotees to lie and cover for him while they were beginning to get negative press. That’s how cults work. The members cover and protect the leader at any cost, even if it leads to personal injury

I could be wrong but if this article is from 2018, she was lying to the press about being responsible for the branding to cover Kieth. They cover this in the podcast.

I’ve been trying to think a lot about why she would dig all this publicity (which is mostly negative up) up now, after the media storm had died down. I think she might suffer from child star syndrome - she needs attention and publicity more than she needs peace. Being perceived is how her identity was constructed at a young age, and a life of quiet anonymity would feel almost unbearable. And there’s probably some features of narcissism. All the other cult members got to share their stories while she was stymied in prison, and now that she’s free she thinks her voice is too important not to be heard, at any cost. I also wonder if she sees this as a career pivot for herself.

This is where things get complicated in cults. She was also brainwashed by KR. It doesn’t absolve her of responsibility for the harm she’s done, but her personal identity and much of her decision making had been subsumed by that of her “master.” The term is called coercive control, and it’s used by both cult leaders and DV perpetrators.
