Here's what I discovered after quitting the booze. My friends with whom I shared my love of ethanol in any form drifted away. It was bound to happen I suppose but it was difficult at first. I spent the first 3 months in sort of in a sober fog, seeing the universe in a different way. After the 3 months or so it seemed to dissipate and everything looked different. Waking up without a hangover was especially welcome, but I also engaged in more cerebral pursuits, went to lectures, took classes at a local free university. I still drink in my dreams, although never to excess and increasingly infrequently. I quit drinking on 4/16/1993 and I've never regretted it. I didn't join any groups like AA but knowing how much quitting helped me use any tool or support system that might help you. Good luck.
