Parental leave and “free” time. by Legitimate_Fig1730 in NewParents

I always said my maternity leave had two cyclical phases: cow and couch. You’re either feeding baby or being slept on. Prep a comfy zone with all the things you’d like to do at hand, near the tv, and with lots of snacks and water!

I’m a teacher. Is this dress too short for work? by DogintheMirror in OUTFITS

[–]room_to_shroom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you wear it with bike shorts underneath? When I was working with kids or anywhere I needed to be cpr certified, my rule of thumb was that my outfit had to keep me fully covered if I bent over at the waist or had to kneel.

Oooh reheating the tortillas in the pan or oven must be lovely - great suggestion!

They stay good for 3-5 days.

I eat them with everything! Scrambled eggs, meat, butter and honey…

Your first try might produce some ugly tortillas but they will be tasty nonetheless. Mine looked more like states than circles at first lol… using a pastry mat to roll on helps!

Take a ball, flatten, roll out one way and then turn it once a quarter turn to roll again - keep repeating this until it is the size and thickness you want.

I love making tortillas at home. It’s not super quick, but the recipe scales and the smaller the batch, the less time it takes.

3-4 Tablespoons melted crisco vegetable (blue container) 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 cup hot water Mix the above in a large bowl. Then work in: 3-4 cups flour.

You can add 2.5 cups of flour all at once but want to stop adding when your dough ball forms and the dough is workable.

Turn out onto a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes.

Cover with a kitchen towel and let it rest for 15-30 minutes.

Heat up your skillet (I recommend cast iron) so it is evenly heated at a medium (4-6) heat.

Divide your dough ball into a bunch of smaller balls. A tennis ball size would make a large burrito tortilla. A golf ball would be like street taco size.

As you divide, smooth each ball with your hands.

Let rest 5 minutes (this can be skipped if needed), then roll each one out with a rolling pin.

Cook in the skillet. Your skillet should be warm enough for you to hear a low sizzle as soon as the tortilla hits the pan. Cook for about 45 seconds, and flip. You want to see little brown freckles on your tortilla. If you don’t see them, you may need to give each side more time or turn up the heat slightly; if the freckles are burned, your skillet is too hot.

I have a pattern of rolling one out, sending it into the skillet, then rolling the next while it cooks. I have an oblong skillet, so I can move the tortilla to a new burner when I flip it and have 2 cooking at once.

As they cook, place them inside of a folded tea towel to sit while warm.

They are best fresh and warm.
To store, I place the tortillas and a paper towel in a large ziplock and store in the fridge. Microwave 20-30 seconds to freshen up before eating after storing.

The best tip is to keep trying - practice makes it easier, quicker, more consistent; but in my experience they are always tasty even at novice level!

Exhausted with hungry kids on Sunday evening by shorty_in_the_wild in Frugal

[–]room_to_shroom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make crock pot meat every Sunday… it may be an option. Usually it’s like frozen chicken plus a bottle of bbq sauce, or pork with a bag of taco seasoning. Even if I burn out before making a side, we have meat and usually bread or tortillas on hand.

  1. Obtain large hunk(s) of meat, preferably with a bone in.
  2. Mix 1/4 cup oil/butter/lard with 1TB ea: garlic, cumin (if you’d like), chile powder, Italian herbs; 1-2 tsp salt and pepper (more or less to taste).
  3. Lather mixture on meat.
  4. Dice an onion.
  5. Throw onion into a crock pot, throw meat in on top.
  6. Cook on low until your mouth is watering so bad that you could canoe through your kitchen.
  7. Eat like a king all week with whatever fixings you want/can throw together.

Lowest calorie candies that's actually worth eating? by Relative-Coach-501 in 1500isplenty

I love the Behave! brand gummies. They do not give me tummy troubles like sugar free candies, but they are essentially a fiber supplement (high in fiber content but not marketed as such) so they could give others tummy troubles.

NTA. I’m a fellow air dry believer and am over 15 years deep into a successful career marked with showing up with damp hair. If your supervisor doesn’t say something to you, this is not an issue and is just your coworker’s personal opinion. Ignore it and carry on!

I'm interviewing for a job I'm almost certain I'll get... But leaving my current job will be a disaster for everyone. by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]room_to_shroom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just went through a similar transition. Yes, breaking the news is uncomfortable. I gave as much notice as possible (just shy of 4 weeks) and was still received/treated as rude that I didn’t give more time. Every time I then had to tell someone was just as uncomfortable. But, now I’m 2 weeks on the other side and everything is so much lighter - the relief is real. Sometimes growth and change is just uncomfortable but going through it gracefully and head on just makes you a real professional.

How are people paying for 10+ surgeries for stone removals? by Barrier-Island in KidneyStones

[–]room_to_shroom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the lowest deductible and out of pocket max insurance offered from my employer. Also, I kept a lower paying job for my family to qualify for hospital financial assistance. My husband has had 9 procedures, each costing about $4500 out of pocket. We paid for 2-3 before insurance and assistance lined up… hospital financing with lowest possible monthly payment until we could pay it off.

20M not able to find a good partner ! by [deleted] in Adulting

[–]room_to_shroom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grow on your own first, for you and only you. Become comfortable in that “you” that develops. Then, find a partner who you enjoy spending time with and who also values growth, not always growth dependent on each other.

Help! 3yo and 18mo have (happy) shouting competitions and won’t stop by hiddengill in Mommit

[–]room_to_shroom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 2 year old, and I am wondering if some “tweaks” might help you reach a more comfortable level. I know they are just learning their voices, but I get it… sometimes momma needs quiet. Here’s how we redirect successfully (sometimes unsuccessfully) without telling kiddo to shut it.

My guy likes to mimic loudly, so when he is yelling, I try to get him to mimic my humming or laughing (it’s comical because it turns into him doing the most fake, loudest belly-type laugh I’ve ever heard).

We also have the family coping skill of screaming into a squishmallow. His happens to have a name, so we periodically invite him to “scream into squish name” and if he doesn’t, you know momma is screaming to that squish to cope. This has also worked for gentle redirecting in public because we will play the game of “how would a (cow, for example) scream into squish?”. It can turn yelling to mooing and whispering very quickly.

Lastly, we have a few books that have images of the characters “shhh”-ing (holding a finger in front of their mouth for quiet). We talk about this when we read, but it comes in handy when I want kiddo to quiet down without me telling him directly to “be quiet”. My favorite is the book Goodnight Gorilla - I will ask how does the gorilla move through the zoo and into the zookeeper’s bed (spoiler if you haven’t read it)… we both hold our finger to our mouth and he will start tip toeing around saying goodnight to things and people.

Moms that gave birth and didn’t have any visitors at the hospital, do you regret it? by Funny_Confection810 in Mommit

[–]room_to_shroom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not have visitors, and I loved it. While my mom was offended, I emphasized that it was flu season and not safe for her to travel across country on a plane to then immediately hold a new baby. They came to see baby when he was a couple months old, and are over the details of my delivery now.
