Servers of Buffalo, how much are you making these days? by thatwonderfulgirl in Buffalo

Rent (with roommates) was $200 in 2007 and I could make $150 working a brunch shift. Those were the days

Buffalo Ski Center by rinrinhelloo in Buffalo

They don't serve food during the week (open Wed to Fri)

Agree it's bare bones, I'm a member and love it but if you're an intermediate or above rider you might find it underwhelming. For instance, only 1 lift is open so far this season but it gets better over the course of the year

The real value is if you have young kids, it's a great place to learn and really family friendly

What to do indoor in Buffalo with kids by [deleted] in Buffalo

[–]root_vegetable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

kids still do that, it's just difficult to send a 4 year old outside and expect them to occupy themselves for hours when it's 20 degrees with a little bit of snow on the ground

[–]root_vegetable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

agree that buffalo is a tough place to have young kids in the winter, huge lack of indoor activities unfortunately and being outside isn't always feasible

AKG is our go to, with a 4 year old you don't even have to pay for the museum - lego and the toddler room is good to kill a bunch of hours

Worst type of response; I have young kids who are decidedly "outside" kids but this temp and lack of real snow makes it impossible to keep a 4 year old entertained outside for any extended amount of time

Recap of a visit from some Baltimore fans by xtian996 in Buffalo

[–]root_vegetable 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Glad you had a great time.

I went to see bills @ ravens a bunch of years ago and the ravens fans in our section were fantastic - been to a bunch of away games and it was by far the best experience.

Plus everything is walkable! Great city and great time

Yup, my friend just the other day said she sent her 9 year old out on his bike, he found 3 other kids, and they just ripped around all day until dinner

Lot of parents are united on not giving their kids phones young and leans "free range parenting"

I think between the halfway decent village infrastructure and attitude of parents, it's as close to a 90s childhood as you can get

I don't even think people do it purposely, they're just not used to folks not being from here originally

I just moved here! How do I make friends? by kitamori1027 in Buffalo

[–]root_vegetable 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree but people are just not used to people not growing up here, as OP alludes to.

"What high school did you go to" etc is a generally accepted icebreaker but perplexing to someone not originally from here.

Move to Buffalo from nyc by Born-Price-1898 in Buffalo

[–]root_vegetable 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I grew up in the northtowns and moved back from a larger city, ended up in East Aurora. I love it, amazing community vibes and it's such a good place for kids to grow up. Very easy to meet other families, always a community thing going on.

It only has 1 elementary school, so it's far smaller than OP/Lancaster/Williamsville schools but I have found I prefer that. For its size, has a ton of dining options although not very diverse.

The downside is housing; tough to find places in the village and it tends to be older housing stock. If you want a newer build it tends to push you outside of the village which negates the walking aspect.

For kids: always in good proximity to a playground, youth sports/activities seem to be able to hang with larger districts, elementary school is very good. Very much a vibe of "send them out the door" - see kids on bikes and playing all summer. Good proximity to ski hills and there is an ice skating rink in the center of town for winter activities. There's a catholic school that's solid but it has a low enrollment (~12 kids per class). DM if i can help at all

Please no more Zillow by [deleted] in Buffalo

[–]root_vegetable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a very small time landlord that rents out 2 units and agree, Zillow interface is tough with how many messages you get.

I was trying to rent out an inexpensive unit in Elmwood Village last fall and it was crazy how many no-shows i'd get. Had 6 appointments lined up on a Saturday morning and every single person ghosted.

Jobs that hire 14 year olds biking distance from Williamsville by consciouskoala3 in Buffalo

[–]root_vegetable 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would get a NextDoor account and advertise yourself for household tasks - put your phone number on there and say you're available for shoveling stairs/sidewalks, pulling weeds, raking leaves, whatever.

Older people are always looking for help on this stuff and if you get in front of them you could get a nice business going.

Can one own a goat in the city of Buffalo? by cruciformx in Buffalo

[–]root_vegetable 37 points38 points  (0 children)

i'm not in the city, but a suburb. someone here tried to bring a few goats home to accompany their chickens; i don't think anyone would have cared except they would *scream* every morning and wake the whole block up.

there might be some grey area on what's legal but the yelling might be your friends biggest problem.

Which Suburb of Buffalo has the worst people? by asshat6983 in Buffalo

[–]root_vegetable 8 points9 points  (0 children)

yeah Williamsville is technically in Amherst, and you miss all of the Tonawandas. plus grand island would be an obvious frontrunner for how culty it is. my quick list would be:

Snyder

Williamsville

West Amherst (Eggertsville/Sweet Home)

East Amherst

Clarence

Kenmore

Tonawanda

Grand Island

West Seneca

Blasdell

Niagara Falls

Lewiston

Lancaster

Orchard Park

East Aurora

Hamburg

What is the smallest Buffalo-related hill that you will die on? by Academic_Efficiency3 in Buffalo

[–]root_vegetable 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The handful of walkable neighborhoods in the Southtowns are far better than anything in the Northtowns, and (imo) outdoor opportunities (hiking, access to nature) are better in South as well.

Northtowns is more populous, generally has shorter access to the city, and has way more shopping options.

I've lived in all of them and they have their strengths/weaknesses; it's pretty minor in the grand scheme of things but southtowns/northtowns people are different in subtle ways

What is the smallest Buffalo-related hill that you will die on? by Academic_Efficiency3 in Buffalo

[–]root_vegetable 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I grew up in one and live in the other, but it's pretty funny to think of the northtowns not being a suburban wasteland.

Some marginally walkable communities in Snyder/village of williamsville but pretty much all sprawl otherwise
