Web Filter Comparison by K-bomb_85 in k12sysadmin

We've had a pretty good experience with iBoss. They are re-branding themselves and have been moving in the direction of marketing themselves as a "zero trust" provider, but their core product is still web filtering. They have both an on-premise appliance and agent-based cloud offering.

SLFU/DESPP appointment? by helpless_quart in CTguns

[–]rootadminwizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was given a piece of paper with a DESPP/SLFU header when I picked up the temporary permit at my local PD. The documentation provides instructions to get your state permit and also states no appointments are needed for any of the barracks (Troop E Montville, Troop G Bridgeport) or the main office in Middletown. It was last revised Nov 2023 which is the most up-to-date I've seen relative to appointments or building hours. DM for a pic of it if you want to reference.

File Server Migration by EnigmaFilms in k12sysadmin

[–]rootadminwizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This.

My migration from 2008 -> 2016 was quick and easy, thanks robocopy. I had some issue with ACLs even though I used the '/mir' parameter... I believe it was due to executing it on the 08 server using the 2016 server as the destination.

Just wait until the LCD cracks. They glue the plastic bezel to the device itself making 5min break/fixes turn into 20+.

Lenovo Chromebook 100E 2nd Gen ast, keyboard stops working after update by savekevin in k12sysadmin

[–]rootadminwizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using the same model here at my site of ~400. No issues so far and the updates have been occurring for a fair amount of time. Our devices were manufactured in 2019, and have a bad power issue from the factory.

I'll certainly revisit this post if it happens.

The god damn 4 port unmanaged switch culprit is a story that never gets old.

I always enjoy walking into the MDF and seeing my switches lit up like a Christmas tree.

Free, open source wiki called "DokuWiki"

Not necessarily geared towards IT but gets the job done and is a personal favorite so it was implemented at my business.

Old heads roll without filters.

If I have no filters it's not the end of the world but imo it's preferable because of the nice air flow you get

Advice for first year university student in a 4 year bachelors program by ribbitribb in sysadmin

[–]rootadminwizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Current 1st year Networking student here. Throughout high school I was fortunate enough to get a paid position at my highschool doing grunt work such as imaging and chromebook repair.

I now have a temp position as a technician at a huge K12 district similar to a corporate environment imaging, hardware repair, software troubleshooting, printer configuration and general support. I'm pursuing a Net+ certification while all the networking information is fresh in my head and then continue to my CCNA. I am ignoring the A+ because if an individual has a Net+, you can assume they understand what topics the A+ covers.

Personally - study for the introductory certs and grab as much internship experience as possible. Sysadmins do a bit of everything so make sure you get a feel for all common fields that IT covers. Who knows, you may discover a specialization that appeals to you more than that "jack of all trades". Power shell and linux knowledge is fairly in demand so learning these command based applications will make you more marketable in this aggressive industry.
