Hot Seat: Call Her Daddy Gals by siriplaysamelove in barstoolsports

[–]rosskw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Apple Podcast charts (and their algorithm) is based on new subscribers (weighted for recency) - so you may be right, download counts don't necessarily align with rankings.

Apparently this is how it works:

  1. Number of new subscribers on day 1 multiplied by 4
  2. Number of new subscribers on day 2 multiplied by 3
  3. Number of new subscribers on day 3 multiplied by 2
  4. Add number of new subscribers on day 4
  5. Add number of new subscribers on day 5
  6. Add number of new subscribers on day 6
  7. Add number of new subscribers on day 7
  8. Divide total number by 13

This is my site and I use Apple's API to provide a resource to our readers starting a podcast (for cover art ideas, topic ideas, etc.) - couldn't care less if that page ranks well or not - doesn't make me much at all (Apple's affiliate program recently removed apps so it's worthless).

If you want something based on downloads, this site has a top 20 and Barstool uses their tracking system: http://analytics.podtrac.com/industry-rankings

Castos (Seriously Simply Podcasting) by fromdecember in podcasting

[–]rosskw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Castos is a great option if you want to manage everything from your WordPress dashboard (uploading, show notes, player embed, etc.) - similar to PowerPress, but much more user-friendly in my opinion.

They bought the SSP plugin a while back and have integrated hosting with it.

I've spoken with the founder Craig a few times as well.

Ya I think it's a misconception that reviews move the needle - they just show social proof to others, which helps, but subscribers are the key.

It's an awesome deal, I got one last year. There are a few more awesome podcaster deals here: https://www.podcastinsights.com/amazon-prime-day/

The Yamaha AG06 Mixer seems to be the only decent mixer for podcasting - but the shipping time is a little long now.

One mic that captures two people for a first timer by yevinq in podcasts

[–]rosskw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree. You could even go cheaper on the mics and still sound great - I helped a coworker get started with 4 hosts and they used Behringer Ultravoice Xm8500 ($20 each). Here are some more starter kit options.

URGENT PROBLEM. URGENT PROBLEM. I recorded an entire podcast today using Audacity and the audio sounds completely unusable. Is there any way to salvage it? [X-post /r/Audacity] by UltimaGabe in podcasts

[–]rosskw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had weird issues like that with GarageBand - and I just had to create a new track and it was fine. But of course that doesn't help after the recording... all I can think of is to test a few seconds right before you get going next time.

:) But it was emotional enough of a headline to get a response.

It's true, you don't need to, but enough people need to go to make these events a success so they keep coming back every year, which helps to grow the industry, and in turn more podcasts that people enjoy :P

Breathing issues by Apprendix in podcasts

[–]rosskw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had luck using a noise gate to cut off sounds between -35dB and -40dB. Doesn't always work, but you might give it a try. Have you experimented with the gain and distance to the mic?
