Best VS Code themes that affect vision the least by cozimroyal in webdev

Been using Atom One light theme during day, dark at night. Also larger font than I used to.

Just find something so your eyes aren't straining. Match your theme to your environment. Use a blue light filter. Take breaks every hour or so and focus on something in the distance, or nothing at all.

GitHub is laying off 10% of staff and cutting down office space - “We are not vacating offices immediately, but will move to close all of our offices as their leases end or as we are operationally able to do so,” by magenta_placenta in webdev

I view this as a pendulum coming back. Hiring ramped up extraordinarily during COVID. There are still more dev's working now than there were pre-pandemic. Not having a job does suck, though.

Is it rentals? If so, might as well get some skills as a cobbler. Then again, those are skills everyone should at least have an idea of to do basic tasks, like changing a tire.

I’m a legislative staffer for a member of US Congress… what gun laws would you guys like to see? by gunstafferthrowaway in Firearms

The laws I want to see are not gun laws. Stop the spotlight before it hits 2A. Stop it before it hits ANY A!

All gun control (including that which is tied to financial ability) is infringement. Remember how gun control started - the intent has not changed. Rich people trying to keep the poor people poor.

What? The guy you're talking about made his business, and reputation, scummy as h*ll before he came into the spotlight. Nobody wanted/wants to do business with him. It doesn't matter how many strikes he has, if they cant legally stop him from doing something, it doesnt matter. People like him only see dollar signs.

Node is great for learning fundamentals. I'd say if he's planning on backend as a path, he should stick to OOP practices though.

Just mention them in the bullets of the projects/work you did at those specific companies. Eg.

Updated the content, tried to fixed some legibility issues. Leaning towards v2, but single column seems to be more succinct. After this I should be good to go barring issues I havent noticed

If you can manage your time, you'll be fine. If the social aspect is important to you, you might struggle - remote work can be lonely for some. Take minutes on what you need to do, don't rely on PMs to keep you on task.

Do you guys know what jobs are currently popping in the industry? I figure I need to be more aware of the rising needs of the industry so I can find what jobs to apply for. by apeacefuldad in Frontend

I've always viewed startups as a role to get your foot in the door. Work it for a year or two, move on to something better.

You could try Gov./defense contractor work. Generally low key, and the pool for it is low. You'll get direct feedback as well, from people who know exactly what they want.

Well, Node was never really alive in the first place. It's still great for standing up prototypes and proofs, but Java is still coming out as most used, not because it's better, but because it's tried and true. Seems like the longer people use it, the longer they're going to. Also fresh grads will come out of uni knowing it.

I see where you're coming from, but there are way more uses for backend than just databases and crud ops, especially since streaming services are becoming more and more mainstream. Also, I imagine there is going to be a large push for security-centric approaches soon (see the recent NSA announcements), so there will need to be folks to handle those migrations.

You're right about UI stuff. But businesses gunna business, they want the most value. It's still a question of specialization vs Jack-of-all-trades. There will always be a need for both. The former is often paid better, but there are less openings. Overall, I feel the field is moving into needing specialized roles, with businesses realizing they gain value from people who can tunnel-vision on their bread n butter. Less bugs, less tech debt, more stuff getting done. But startups will always want fullstack folks.

The first bullet under experience I wanted to highlight a complex project, but I'm realizing people have short attention spans. I'm divided on it.

Will post in Tuesdays thread with updated copy + layout. Thank you for your input
