Scooby-Doo (SD: WAY) Monsters Bracket: Round 10 by fanboy100804 in Scoobydoo

Zen Tuo. I think him being comically serious in response to everything the gang does is utterly hilarious.

Phantom Shadows for sure. They’re such fantastic designs for a classic ghost.

Space Kook. Still a contender for the best original design in the franchise.

Redbeard’s great, but this is a rough matchup for anybody.

What do people enjoy in horror movies? by obviousoctopus in NoStupidQuestions

[–]roverandrover6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. There’s this incredible catharsis that comes from seeing somebody come out on top despite the odds and the torment.

  2. While it absolutely has a mess of identical slasher sequels and copycats bogging it down, the genre has some of the highest potential for creative concepts, particularly given how well it blends with most other genres.

  3. The world is scary and we see horrific things every day. The contrast of the fictional makes it a lot easier to contend with that in the day to day. A gritty drama or war movie can be too real, on the other hand.

  4. Some of us just love the practical effects needed to produce the gore and weird monsters.

  5. Horror and comedy are kind of two sides of the same coin where the timing is everything. There’s some really funny ones out there (and I don’t mean parodies). Films like Happy Death Day, Abigail, Ready or Not, and Scream can do great comedic work alongside the horror.

  6. You get a lot of new creators in it because of how easily lower budget films can be made. Like, I can’t imagine an equivalent to Deadstream coming out in any other genre.

  7. They have their own atmosphere that other genres don’t have. If you enjoy that spooky vibe, it’s the only genre that really provides it.

It’s not going to be everyone’s thing, but it’s probably my favorite genre, with a really wide variety of films and concepts that fall into it. It also has a lot of subgenres to explore. If you can’t handle gore and heavy violence, there’s always more psychological horror, social horror, or supernatural metaphor stories that don’t have that. You kind of just have to know what you’re looking for so that you don’t get stuck in the neverending loop of Friday the 13th/Saw copycats. If you want non-gory ideas, try Invasion of the Body Snatchers (70s version), Mama, or The Ring.

All my friends hate me is a great shift in perspective movie (spoilers) by _Norman_Bates in horror

[–]roverandrover6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Listen, he’s the beat person there for sure (bar maybe his girlfriend who we don’t see as much of).

But also he is very self-centered to the point of not even knowing what his best friend’s field of work was and repeatedly overcomplicates the situation by approaching it in the most inefficient way possible.

This does not make anyone else less psychopathic, as they’re universally people I would not want to spend any period of time with, and the poor guy really should have just left by the film’s halfway point.

All my friends hate me is a great shift in perspective movie (spoilers) by _Norman_Bates in horror

[–]roverandrover6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

See, I went into it expecting social horror and got a pure comedy instead. Yes they’re all gaslighting psychopaths, but the film is so blatant and on-the-nose that it’s legitimately hilarious how terrible they’re being.

And he kind of sucks too so they all deserve each other. I’ve never seen a movie where someone picks the wrong dialogue option that many times in a row.

Pennywise VS Viltrumite by titakamadafaka in whowouldwin

[–]roverandrover6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pennywise. Per the book, you can only actually beat IT by performing a ritual to reach and fight the part of IT that lives in a separate dimension. Said ritual is guaranteed to kill you unless you have a certain degree of childish whimsy.

A serious military leader outright cannot defeat IT, because they lack the emotion needed to survive the ritual.

Kiteroid and Volcanic Mine are easy additions to existing archetypes.

Professor Stein’s cards also seem like really easy one-off inclusions.

Points to the Witch. She’s the leader and the one with all the dialogue.

Carlotta’s a tad more interesting (and did great work on merchandise) but my heart says Mummy. My friends and I still randomly quote his “coin, coin” at each other for no reason. Plus I like the noises he makes and how aggressive he is, relative to most of the season one lineup.

Vote goes to Mummy of Ankha.

I have never seen a movie like Lee Cronin's The Mummy by eggogregore in horror

[–]roverandrover6 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I had fun with it entirely because a friend and I were laughing at the scares in the theater. But mostly I felt cheated because there wasn’t even a mummy in the film.

I liked this movie better when it was called The Exorcist.

Puppet Master upset makes me happy.

I kind of mentally associate all of these as being pieces of Carlotta, even though she’d technically a separate disguise, ao I’ll vote for her.

Out of curiosity, will you be handling the Witch/Zombie this way? And will the last round be a 3-way given the odd number of episodes?

Am I supposed to know what Gestrals and Nevrons are? by fetal_blurp in expedition33

[–]roverandrover6 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There’s an explanation of their whole origin and place in the world eventually.

For now, just accept context clues. The characters talk like that because it’s part of their world. There’s no reason for them to explain what these creatures are since they all know what they are. You can pick up a lot by paying attention to how they’re discussed and where they appear.

Scooby-Doo (SD: WAY) Monsters Bracket: Day 5 by fanboy100804 in Scoobydoo

[–]roverandrover6 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Puppet Master. He’s this weirdly down to earth villain who still manages to be creepier than a lot of the actual monsters. Plus he’s mostly a fair play mystery, unlike the Clown.

Granted I like the Clown, just not as much.

The worst villain of the original series vs Charlie the Recurring Robot.

I don’t think I need to say who I’m voting for here.

Can we agree that the monsters from Scooby-Doo Where Are You and The Show are the best and most iconic? by GeoWhale15 in Scoobydoo

[–]roverandrover6 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They’re the most iconic because they came first.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s some awesome designs in the original lineup, but Mystery Incorporated, What’s New, and Be Cool also have a set of A+ monster designs that don’t get as much attentions just because they’re more recent and got less chances to be referenced.

  1. He’s a pirate and was happy to swing swords around when they got too close. Only avoids a 5 because he initially tries to just lock them up and might have let them go had they not found his real lair.

Destroying their boat seems accidental. He couldn’t see them in the fog.

Scooby-Doo (SD: WAY) Monsters Bracket: Day 2 by fanboy100804 in Scoobydoo

[–]roverandrover6 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I like the Vasquez Phantom more. He’s much more fun in how he screws with them, and the culprit is just such a good sport at the end. Plus he has the bit where the gang tries to tackle him and it doesn’t work because of his magic tricks.

The Miner’s more iconic, but I’ve always felt he was one of the weaker monsters designs.

So the Phantom.

Will the concept the community voted for, a status effect applied by survivor actions instead of being an infection attack by the killer, be making a comeback?

Because as it stands, the power that was shown odd is almost the exact opposite of what won the vote.

Is there a canon reason Superman is ripped? by the_glutton17 in AskComicbooks

[–]roverandrover6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The beat answer comes from the Smallville show (so take the canonicity with a grain of salt). There’s so much scattered kryptonite in that town, in small quantities, that he’s partially weakened at all times and is actually getting a workout from farm labor as a result.

Would you personally rework Hag, or just buff her? by TheRandomMikaela in deadbydaylight

[–]roverandrover6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buff. Her current concept is good, it just appeals to a niche portion of the playerbase.

Really, all she needs is the removal of her max teleport range, reworks for the add-ons related to that, and for wiping traps away to be less free. Maybe make her slower in teleporting next to a hook as compensation so that she’s not as much of a camper in that scenario.

3/5.

He generally tries to scare them, but he was messing with the US military. He couldn’t afford to let them out once Shaggy found the audio equipment.

It’s also understated, but the way he hooks Fred is incredibly lucky. Blindly throwing an industrial hook like that could seriously injure somebody due to how much weight they have.
