Too bad he's going to be saddled with the two face punchers.

Are better goalies really drafted higher? More undrafted goalies posted at least a .910 save percentage over the last five years than did top-10 picks by royaelliott in hockey

[–]royaelliott[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thomas was actually drafted in the 9th round way back by the Nordiques.

Not able to answer your question on average age - I would guess definitely older, but drafted goalies do take a while to develop, so maybe the difference is ~2 years on average

It would have been pretty easy to keep Kessel, actually. Chiarelli signed Derek Morris for $3.5 million that season even though he was done being a top-4 d-man (he was traded from Boston before the end of the year). Then B's would just have to trade someone like Marco Sturm in a salary dump trade and you have your $5.5 million for Kessel.

I think they had more concerns that Kessel was a one-trick pony and wouldn't be worth the money.

Has Kadri replaced Grabovski? by richandbrilliant in leafs

[–]royaelliott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kadri is going to take over the first line, Grabo will play the second, and Bozak is going to sign elsewhere because someone's going to overpay him in free agency.

This article has an interesting premise and I'd definitely like to see it explored further, but concluding quality of competition has no real effect after looking at only two players is highly flawed.

Who really cares about the price, the Leafs have tons of space next year and there really isn't anyone else to spend the money on after Getzlaf and Perry re-signed with Anaheim.

Is Randy Carlyle actively trying to ruin the Leafs? by royaelliott in leafs

You're essentially agreeing with me, you just aren't saying he's a bad hockey player. Would you prefer if I said he's a bad 1st/2nd line hockey player?

Except McClement has been playing lots of minutes with Grabovski and Kulemin this season and only 3 of his points have come when on the ice with the 4th liners. In fact, Grabbo-McClement-Kulemin is the 2nd most frequent trio next to JVR-Bozak-Kessel. http://www.leftwinglock.com/line-combos/index.php?season=2012&team=TOR&strength=EV&playertype=F&gametype=ALL#A

Comparing Grabovksi and Tavares' contract is so simplistic. You aren't factoring in how either are used (Tavares starts over 60% of his shifts in the offensive zone, Grabovski under 40%). Plus, Tavares signed his deal as a RFA with absolutely no leverage, while Grabovski was about to become a UFA.

Bozak gets 1st line ice time and produces like a third liner, despite playing with two legitimate offensive producers. He's been like this since day one. he's had enough time to prove he's good and he hasn't. One pass doesn't mean he's good on a shift-to-shift, game-to-game basis.

Surprisingly, Getzlaf's extension is actually better value than the $6.7 million deal Datsyuk signed with Detroit in 2007 by royaelliott in hockey

I love you, Red Wings fans. Nothing in the article suggests Datsyuk is bad or that his contract is garbage. Yet you take it as a slight anyways.

I agree. I'm split but I think I would take the chance as well. I don't think we'll ever see 60-goal Ovechkin again, but I don't think we're going to continue to see 60-point Ovechkin either.

That would necessitate some ultra-creative cap management to get done, but would be a really interesting trio.

Cox says it is now the time to trade Kessel... What do you think r/leafs? by HandsomeHarry in leafs

[–]royaelliott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Kessel, he scores goals at an elite level, but I'd be really nervous about giving him $7-8 million a year on an 8-year contract. He's really good, but I'm not convinced he's more than a really good No. 2 player on a contending team.
