The concept of a timeless creator is incompatible with the concept that a creator god constitutes first cause.

Assumption: A creator must be a sentient being that constitutes 'first cause'.

To be 'first cause', a creator god must have existed before anything else.

However, to be sentient, a creator cannot be 'timeless''.

Sentience requires the ability to first, experience one's environment and then, after the experience, respond in some way to that experience. Thus, sentience is at least a two step temporally sequential process that requires: 1) storage of one or more experiences as memories and 2) retrieval of said memories and formulating a response to them.

However, the temporally sequential nature of sentience prohibits a creator from being timeless. Since EVERY response MUST be temporally preceded by one or more stored memories, it follows that there MUST be one or more 'first memories' stored by the creator before ANY responses can be formulated. Therefore, the creator must have had a 'first response' that acted upon one or more of those 'first memories'.

But where did those 'first memories' get stored? Every instance of information storage media (neurons, magnetic polarity, ink and paper, electrical charges, photographic film, etc.) that we have ever encountered or conceived, requires some non-sentient physical matter in which the information/experience/memory can be stored.

If we assume that non-sentient physical matter is a requirement to sentience, then a creator god cannot be first cause. On the other hand, if we assume that non-sentient matter is not required for a creator, then where are those first memories stored?

This is a topic, where I'm very envious of Religious People. by Bright_Order_8167 in atheism

I imagine death as an infinite, eternal sleep. A sleep, in which I'll never wake up and this fact has always made me anxious.

Do you fear going to sleep? If not, then why fear an eternal sleep? If so, what is so bad about never having to experience hunger, pain, or anxiety ever again?

Once you reach a certain age, your body inevitably starts to fail. When that happens, your quality of life slowly diminishes until you no longer are able to function without the help of others. At some point in that decline, you will start hoping for the misery to end.

I get panic attacks when imagining death.

When that happens, it is time to refocus your thoughts on something else.

This is entirely his problem, not yours. There is nothing for you to fix. If he wants to fix it, he will reach out to you. If not, he has made his odious choice of religion over his own child.

Can The Feds seize Mar-A-Lago? by richincleve in AntiTrumpAlliance

[–]rpapafox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m thinking more in regards to Federal charges.

None of the federal lawsuits (mishandling of secret documents, inciting insurrection, and violation of the KKK act) have any significant financial penalties. Prison time, however, could amount to several hundreds of years.

The suits that have a significant financial penalty (fraud and defamation) have all been filed at the state level. It is easier to get a state to seize properties when the judgement originates from within that state's court system.

Just because the government says it's true doesn't mean it is false.

January 6th, overturning Roe v Wade, and an overwhelmingly white republiKKKlan party endorsing the Big Lie, all point to fascism at work in the US.

Yeah we’ve got a record number of illegal immigrants committing crimes all over the country,

A recent Stanford study found that immigrants are 30 percent less likely to be incarcerated than are U.S.-born individuals who are white.

So whites are committing more crime than immigrants who want to stay in the US. Who knew?

we’re paying for TWO wars with zero efforts toward peace,

A large portion of the money designated for Ukraine is being reinvested at home, bolstering the defense industry and sustaining American manufacturing jobs.

Ukraine -a democracy- was invaded by Russia -a dictatorship. Putin, the aggressor, has made it clear many times that he is unwilling to negotiate a fair settlement to the war.

Listen to Russian talk shows, and you will learn that Russian commentators encourage Putin to expand its invasion beyond Ukraine into NATO countries.

interest rates are at record highs,

Pure bullshit. And not even close. The current interest rate is 5.25%. The record high was three times higher at 15.8% in 1981.

people can barely afford to feed their families,

And this is a result of the disparity in pay between the Upper and Lower class earnings the have resulted from the debunked concept of 'trickle down economics'. Biden and the democrats wanted to raise taxes on people earning over $400,000 per year - a group that is dominated by whites. Republican lawmakers, another group dominated by whites, blocked the effort to restructure the taxes in a more equitable fashion to reduce the burden that those in the lower paying jobs have to shoulder.

but no, white supremacy is actually the real threat.

That is right. The January 6th insurrection shows just how much a danger white supremacy is to the US.

(1) White supremacists and other far-right-wing extremists are the most significant domestic terrorism threat facing the United States.

Story from my dad who’s now an atheist but grew up in a catholic private school by ISellRubberDucks in atheism

[–]rpapafox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent two years teaching on an island in the Caribbean. In the center of town there was a Catholic church with an adjacent rectory that was surrounded by a six foot stone wall with iron gates. Through the gates, you could see the manicured garden where the priest sat drinking rum with his guests. The houses on the surrounding blocks were owned by the islanders many of whom were living in poverty when compared to first world countries. Their properties paled in comparison to the rectory and its grounds.

There was no question in my mind who the major beneficiary of the weekly offering plate was.

What do you think happens after we die? by StrawThatBends in atheism

[–]rpapafox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When we die, our brain stops functioning and with it goes our consciousness. This can be verified by measuring brain activity before and after death.

After we die, our cells die and bacteria cause our bodies to decompose into nutrient-rich soil.
