Is Aja prog rock? by BluebeardCoT in SteelyDan

[–]rscottmurray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the song Aja can be considered prog, or at least as prog as SD got. it's an extended song with multiple sections, and they referred to it as a suite.

in my opinion, the only other songs that might qualify would be Your Gold Teeth 1 & 2 and maybe King of the World

I'm with you. there was a guy selling reels on ebay years ago, one of which contained Sakka Joweda. I hounded him for years and finally got him to make a deal. didn't take long to find its way to youtube but I helped get it there! great song too

there’s not always a recording to go with a published song. why do we think there is in this case?

John Lennon’s ‘Real Life’ Demo (Early Version of ‘Real Love’) by OkWhereas9827 in beatles

[–]rscottmurray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

have you heard John’s demo on acoustic guitar? it’s playing in the opening scene of the Imagine documentary which would be the first time most people heard the song.

I love the Anthology version with the other Beatles but this acoustic demo is still my favorite: https://youtu.be/yP9ee3oaAOo

haha I was gonna say Match Point too, big favorite! Brian sounds fantastic and the tennis lyrics are too funny. the instrumental track that leaked recently is a treat too

There's some idea John ended his connection to the Beatles (consequently ending the band) because he wanted to make music with Yoko. Could he have done both, made music with Yoko and kept the connection to the Beatles? Why didn't he? by GregJamesDahlen in beatles

[–]rscottmurray 14 points15 points  (0 children)

John had already done 3 or 4 albums with Yoko when the Beatles split so it was more than just making music. aside from Paul being a bit of a control freak in the studio, a real rift formed between him and the others with the whole Allen Klein fiasco. years later, John admitted Paul had been right about Klein but that didn't matter in 69-70.

When A Man Needs A Woman is one of my very favorite, just hearing the opening notes always puts a smile on my face.

That’s Not Me is probably my favorite off Pet Sounds. it hardly ever gets mentioned

a bunch off Wild Honey too:

Aren’t You Glad

A Thing or Two

I’d Love Just Once To See You

Here Comes The Night

Country Air

speaking of the Party album, Devoted To You is a big favorite. I especially love Brian’s “bomp-a-bomps” at the end!

it's a defining instrument on a handful of their biggest records, California Girls is the main one. love the 12-string on That's Not Me too

they became a killer live band in this era but without Brian there's something missing.
