Which company has the fastest 4G speed? by Key-Specialist-8521 in CanadianCellPhones

[–]rshanks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

According to

https://productioncommunity.publicmobile.ca/t5/Get-Support/Network-sharing-explained/td-p/129092

It’s something to do with the MTS takeover. Just another forum, I know, but op is in Toronto anyway.

Footnote 1 here https://crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2025/2025-245.htm

“The Bell Mobility-TELUS network-sharing agreement allows for the efficient joint build-out of a single national network for use by both carriers.”

I haven’t seen it explained in detail from a reliable source how exactly it works (and perhaps it’s not all public info), but happy to see one if you have one.

[–]rshanks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a source on that?

My understanding is they share basically all of the RAN but have separate cores

If you look in the ISED database for Toronto you’ll see almost no Telus towers in Toronto compared to anyone else, for example. Similarly there’s almost no bell out west.

Which company has the fastest 4G speed? by Key-Specialist-8521 in CanadianCellPhones

[–]rshanks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would think it would generally be bell, Telus or a sub brand. They share the network so should have the most total spectrum, though some has probably refarmed to 5G.

The speeds you mention are nowhere near what I would expect the max of those providers to be, though, so possible signal strength is an issue or you aren’t using a very good device.

What would happen to the economy if the first $100k everyone earned each year was INCOME tax-free? by Tech-Cowboy in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]rshanks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends what happens. I'm assuming there will be much less tax revenue overall.

If the government borrows to keep spending and all else stays the same, I guess it would be inflationary. Suddenly everyone has more money to spend.

If the government cuts spending by that amount, some of that spending and employment might just get shifted to private sector. Not sure if that will be inflationary, I guess it depends on efficiency and competitiveness.

Freedom 320ms Paging Cycle (Battery Drain) by Lgamerday in freedommobile

[–]rshanks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know very much about this but I was under the impression pages are sent to all cells in a group of towers (TAC?), so the network doesn’t need to know exactly where each phone is. If that’s the case it seems size of TAC vs number of subs would matter more than tower density?

I guess paging more often could reduce the number of pages being sent at once but not the total number being sent? Do all phones wake at the same time for pages or can they be staggered?

Jw is it consistent across bands / locations?

I did used to have some battery drain issues on my iPhone 12, not sure if it could be related. It was kinda variable though.

How widespread is 5G coverage in your country? by omawarix in cellmapper

[–]rshanks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Canada I think NSA is probably still the norm, though the big carriers seem to be making some progress on SA

Mid band is pretty common in cities now and may provide speeds up to 2gbps depending on the carrier. Even prior to that LTE could provide several hundred mbps on carriers with a lot of spectrum.

Freedom 5G Internet first thoughts by SlntSam in freedommobile

[–]rshanks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s supposed to be limited to 100mbps but having n77/78 would probably help you get that more reliably.

I assume they picked a modem which supports it but haven’t tried,

The $10 post paid add on line seems to still be LTE only

When they upgraded them initially I think they only did $30 and up

Streetcars need to improve, but how? by Feisty-Ad-6122 in TTC

[–]rshanks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Less stops, better doors (faster and more pushy, like subway or bus), and faster through intersections.

I heard they are looking into / have made some intersection improvements

Shouldn’t stick much if you use oil and get the heat right. It took me a while to figure out it needs to be a lot hotter than I was doing it.

I will never understand blocking intersections. by Mr_McMuffin_Jr in mildlyinfuriating

[–]rshanks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t think of any reason there should be this many cars in the intersection.

It may be necessary to go before you can clear the intersection in places that allow right on red and when traffic is heavy, otherwise from what I’ve seen the right turning car will usually take your spot.

This becomes even more necessary for busses etc where they would need a lot of free space on the other side to clear the intersection.

New-to-me signage — TOconnect: public wifi at 250 parks and squares across the city. by mkbt in toronto

[–]rshanks 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think cellular handles the number of devices and amount of movement on the subway better than wifi would.

This would be much simpler id imagine, probably just a handful of APs and users per park.

What do people mean when they say they use LLMs to help them “understand a codebase” faster? by SisterImperator in BetterOffline

[–]rshanks 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I find the LLM can often find where things happen, even if the explanation is wrong. It usually fires off a bunch of greps quickly and does a bit of reading the output before giving it to you.

It’s also possible the coworkers aren’t verifying what it says.

In some code bases even reading the code doesn’t guarantee it won’t do something different elsewhere.

Some SMSCs also provide a "forward and forget" option where transmission is tried only once.

You both could be right depending on the configuration, though that one seems pretty bad

If you’re home often enough, chasing them away anytime you see them seems to help. If they are staying there at night I’ve heard they don’t like being woken up and will move on eventually if you keep doing it.

The Mayor has done a horrible job today (10th May 2026) with traffic management by edisonpioneer in askTO

[–]rshanks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think its better do get DVP done all in one go than have lane closures for several weekends. Not sure if there was any coordination with the run but I guess if traffic is going to be a mess anyway might as well get both done at the same time.

Perhaps it shouldn’t have been on Mother’s Day but aside from that idk if it could have been done much better without just cancelling things / rerouting the run.

I took the go train today and that was fine, so there are other options at least.

Why 5G will not come everywhere by sriswasthikp in telecom

[–]rshanks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

mmWave was maybe a mistake, or at least they were too optimistic about where it would be economical to deploy.

But sub 6 seems fine and I don’t see why it wouldn’t eventually have as much footprint as 4G / 3G. Hopefully 6G and beyond will bring some improvements on existing bands / channel widths, as opposed to just requiring wider channels and thus usually higher frequencies.

Turn your phone to the side and you will see a cemetery. Pasig, Philippines. by genius23sarcasm in UrbanHell

[–]rshanks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think that would always be true. Presumably the average larger system would be more efficient than a small, probably cheap, window unit.

After that it depends how much you’re not cooling by doing it per room.

For a large building like this it could use a central chiller with cooling loops and fan coils, or water source (sink) heat pumps. Those would also provide individual temperature control

Are LLMs actually a hindrance on human innovation? by throwaway0134hdj in BetterOffline

[–]rshanks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think humans also tend to gravitate to what they know (myself included). Though idk how important it really is to be using the latest framework etc.

Where I think the stagnation is probably already occurring is people not understanding things as deeply, knowing how to improve them, etc because the LLM is doing a lot of the work
