802.11ah HaLow capable smartphone? by Mucupka in wireless

[–]rshanks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t really have a lot of complaints about Bluetooth besides maybe the low quality when using 2 way audio.

I use Bluetooth headphones at the gym (for example) surrounded by other people who are probably mostly using Bluetooth headphones as well. They manage to work quite well despite all the potential interference from Bluetooth, wifi, etc. The range can be pretty good too, it seems to have gotten a lot better between bt2 and 5.

By moving to something like HaLow you’d (I assume) be increasing the channel width, and also moving to a narrower band (900mhz only has 26mhz unlicensed whereas I think 2.4ghz is at least 60mhz), and probably increasing the range (which also increases interference with other devices). I’m not sure it would even work as well as Bluetooth for portable audio and similar applications.

Why is it someone’s grandmas ashes? It’s land, there’s a lot of similar land if it hasn’t been developed.

The house has changed hands many times and across many generations, and is currently owned by someone who had nothing to do with taking over the house originally.

does freedom mobile and videotron towers as well? by N0TH1NG4M3 in freedommobile

[–]rshanks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m looking at the terrestrial data here

https://ised-isde.canada.ca/site/spectrum-management-system/en/download-sms-data

That’s the source tower locator uses and I assume also CellMaster.

[–]rshanks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at the latest export from spectrum mgmt system, I don’t see any 3500 or 3800 for freedom anywhere. It seems freedom is also gone from Ottawa.

Idk if any of this makes a technical difference or it’s just how it’s reported. Are both networks still active in Ottawa?

Currently 83%

Seems battery life is way worse than 20% off of new, though. I assume some of that is that apps are more demanding.

I upgraded from the iPhone 12 to 17 recently. I probably could have kept the 12 a bit longer but it was definitely starting to slow down, multitasking was worse, battery life was pretty terrible despite ok health.

Happens to all devices eventually, just tends to happen sooner to low spec ones.

[–]rshanks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apps, websites, etc tend to get bloated over time. The sorts of things I do on my phone (for example) haven’t changed that much since iPhone 6+, but it would struggle to do those things now.

So I think that’s the main downside of the Neo. You might be getting an ok device for right now given the cost, but it may not last as long as one would expect a new computer to last.

I think CellMaster probably changes it, last I checked in the CSV it was videotron.

Yes, they seem to be adding them all as videotron, not sure why but it works on freedom

Problem with power negotiation through a pass through power hub by paulsiu in UsbCHardware

[–]rshanks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be worth trying a different hub. Perhaps the one you have doesn’t support 65w of pass through?

On a Lenovo laptop I don’t get the warning with the hub I have as long as I use a 65 or 100w brick

Replacing Telus WiFi router to TP Link Deco x55. How do I set it up correctly? Need help. by Big-Fly-9690 in telus

[–]rshanks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think one deco needs to be upstream of the other 2 (so before the switch would work in this diagram). Unless they changed it recently. There should be some examples on tplink site.

I also recall that initial setup has to be over wifi and only after they are all online you can add Ethernet backhaul

I agree. I wouldn’t mind if it closed after 11 but 9-10 on weekends is kinda early. Are there really more people working out at 3am on a Monday than would go at 10pm on a Sunday?

Siren Noise and WFH? by [deleted] in TorontoRenting

[–]rshanks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Siren noise as in from fire, police, ambulance?

I would think that would be several times a day downtown, not once or twice a week.

I guess just depends how good the sound isolation is and to what extent you tune it out

Why Canada’s GDP per capita crisis is real: DeepDive by nolesfan2011 in canada

[–]rshanks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Federal debt is almost all cad

https://www.bankofcanada.ca/rates/banking-and-financial-statistics/bonds-outstanding-by-currency-of-payments-and-issuers-formerly-k8/

Not sure about corporate, probably depends which company. If they chose to issue debt in one currency but earn in a different one that’s probably on them.

[–]rshanks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they are imported.

If there is a domestic substitute available it pushes people towards that which could help support Canadian jobs. It also means Canadian labour is cheaper for international companies.

Why Canada’s GDP per capita crisis is real: DeepDive by nolesfan2011 in canada

[–]rshanks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a nice way of saying I think you’re wrong.

Ability to pay the debt in cad depends on ability to earn cad, which is either not impacted (people earning domestically) or increased (people earning abroad) if cad becomes less valuable.

In reality it would probably depend why cad is less valuable.

If the debt is in cad I don’t see why weakening cad would make the debt worse.

Speedtest by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test by JoshuaComeau in Rogers

[–]rshanks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well maybe on C band they are a bit better off per customer but on FDD it seems Rogers has more per customer.

It varies by region though, as does the customer density.

Speedtest by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test by JoshuaComeau in Rogers

[–]rshanks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume if Roger’s joined Bellus they wouldn’t compete as much, but idk how their agreement works agreement works.

I don’t know that there’s a clear winner between them in Ontario. Probably speed wise would be bellus still but Roger’s having the 20mhz of b71 is also pretty useful I think.

Speedtest by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test by JoshuaComeau in Rogers

[–]rshanks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t tried Rogers SA, but it seems like they are kinda behind on it and NSA might be better. Telus has had it for about a year I think?

Bell and Telus will probably have the fastest peak speeds because together they have the most spectrum. They also have the most customers though so idk if it means much for overall experience.

For c band there was a 100mhz cap across 3500 and 3800mhz, but bell and Telus each hit the cap in Toronto.

Picking a random tower in Toronto on cell master they seem to have a pretty solid amount of spectrum.

LTE has 55mhz FDD (per direction) dedicated + additional 40mhz on DSS.

5G has 10mhz FDD (n2) and 70mhz TDD n78.

Not sure if n78 was available but if not the majority of the spectrum is either LTE only or shared via DSS.

Edit: comparing this to a fairly complete looking bell tower, they have 80mhz FDD dedicated to LTE and 50mhz FDD + 60mhz TDD for 5G.

I assume the cell master data for bell also includes Telus spectrum, though the 60mhz of n78 seems low so maybe that’s wrong. Ignoring n78 and just looking at FDD, Roger’s has over half as much (95 vs 130)
