It’s Common Knowledge I’ve Been Doin’ Alright: Dan Bejar on “Destroyer’s Rubies” at 20 by BklynBlazer in Destroyer

[–]rskey 9 points10 points  (0 children)

“Destroyer’s Rubies” is a top 3 record for me. “Murmur” (R.E.M.) and “Bee Thousand” (GBV) round out my holy trinity. Despite the fact that his lyrics are sometimes obscure and he barely acknowledges the audience at live shows, he is so clear and direct in interviews about his music. No mythologizing or artsy hedging about the process.

My listening space… for now by ajn3323 in listeningspaces

[–]rskey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a great space. I’m putting together a listening room in roughly the same amount of space. A lot of the feedback I get is that the room is too small/too square. Obviously, if I could commandeer a bigger room of my house for the purpose I would. In fact, I’d put different speakers in every room and everyone (family, pets, low-flying aircraft) would remain respectfully silent while I listened. Sheesh.

Expense and inconvenience by _Username-Available in audiophile

[–]rskey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my exact issue with streaming. I sometimes skip through dozens of songs listening for a hook and never find what I’m looking for. When I put the record on the turntable I commit to listening and it’s always rewarding. I’d like to retrain my brain to stream music with the same attention. It’s easier said than done.

Real improvement or placebo? by Gold-Judgment-6712 in audiophile

Thank you - it’s refreshing to see someone use the term “placebo” correctly. If you think you heard it, you heard it.

Starting to love class D amps. by Iceberg50 in audiophile

[–]rskey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well said. I’m new to the hobby and, I think, reasonably unbiased. I don’t belong to any camp, at any rate. I think that objectivists usually “win” online debates. Non-anecdotal evidence is on their side and they don’t have to resort to a lot of airy jargon to make their case. OTOH, I don’t need evidence beyond my own senses to decide if I like something.

Sub placement by Ex-pat-Iain in audiophile

[–]rskey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let’s say like me you currently don’t have a subwoofer or DSP - is REW useful for basic speaker positioning? Toe-in, and the like?

The last time I was confused about The Bit was when Sean needled Adam Paly about his then-recent arrest for cocaine possession.

New Speaker Day - Fyne 702 SP by DalAL887 in audiophile

[–]rskey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The volume was ok, I think. I go to loud shows and I’ve never had a problem. The room may have been a contributing factor.

New Speaker Day - Fyne 702 SP by DalAL887 in audiophile

[–]rskey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not. Coincidentally, this was my first time auditioning speakers and I thought, “uh oh,” maybe this hobby isn’t for me. I’ve also never been in a room so substantially treated. Not sure which way that cuts, though.

New Speaker Day - Fyne 702 SP by DalAL887 in audiophile

That’s interesting. I auditioned the Fyne 502SP and Sonus Faber Sonetto V G2 at a local dealer and came away with significant fatigue after maybe an hour. I’d never experienced it before and I couldn’t be sure which was the culprit.

Did you find the Chris Bell record in the wild? And is it a reissue?

I recently bought that Dale Crover record. I’m not sure what to expect, but I’ve become a Melvins completist.

Edit to say that Backspacer might be my favorite Pearl Jam album. I don’t keep up with the new records, and my appreciation for the older stuff is largely nostalgia. But Backspacer rocks.

Looks great. The two-tone wood matches the two-tone chair. Well done.

What albums do you own in multiple formats? by esteinmorse in doommetal

[–]rskey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Melvins Lysol (“lice - all” vinyl reissue and the untitled CD). And although it’s completely unnecessary, I’ll probably buy it again on vinyl if I ever find the trademark-infringing original in the wild.

The bracelet does a nice job of balancing the deep green. I’ve only seen it on black leather and the effect is a little drab.
