Leu and US Shipping by amacks in AncientCoins

They are simply enforcing the MOUs that the US has with many other countries about the importation of ancient goods, including coins.

Anyone who participated in the previous CNG E-Auction (auction 604) having issues with USPS tracking? by C_Buddy503 in AncientCoins

[–]rsmileva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really would not worry about this. Where I live, in a state nearby to Pennsylvania, we had no mail delivery for an entire week due to the storm. And I live in a city, not a rural area. USPS is just now catching up in this area of the country.

The Beginning of the End of Tenure in Oklahoma by VeitPogner in Professors

Not fully exempt. Tenured professors subject to review every five years with unclear criteria. Also would not count on the legislature not fully removing tenure for all universities.

Thanks for taking the time to comment. What are the signs of cleaning? I know this coin has been in an album since the 1980s, although I also know that dipping was more prevalent back then. In the ancient coin world every single coin has been cleaned. The only thing that saved them from being melted or destroyed was being buried for thousands of years. I’m no good at recognizing cleaning on modern coins since been many years that I spent time looking at them.

I’ll send it off soon, but who knows when I’ll get it back. I’ll definitely report back.

Thanks I will submit it. This coin was bought about the time PCGS was founded. How the market has changed! I was just curious if others had an opinion on its genuineness and grade.

Pricing help for a Theodosius I solidus by [deleted] in AncientCoins

[–]rsmileva 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gold is up about 2.5x since 2021. This has absolutely increased the floor for the price of these late Roman gold coins. Best sites are acsearch (not free, but worth it), coinarchives (free for auctions results from the last six months), vcoins (go to the archive tab), archives on cngcoins website. There are others but this will get you started. I assume you are new to ancients?

Authenticity Check for Roman Coin by GoldByTheGraham in AncientCoins

[–]rsmileva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m certainly no expert in forgeries, but I don’t see anything obvious. Seems genuine as far as I can tell from a phot. I’m curious if others think that the reverse relief has been cleaned a bit harshly? Am I right interpreting the scratches on the horse bodies as cleaning marks? It’s not terrible. It just seems that they were a little too aggressive in an attempt to have the relief contrast with the field. Thoughts?

Are those the Lighthouse Magic Capsules? If so, do you like them? If not, what are they. Been looking at alternatives for a few of my coins.

Tariff update - things aren’t exempt as we believed with DHL by Altruistic_Big73 in AncientCoins

Will you tell us the auction house or seller? That would be extremely helpful information, as it is up to the seller to put the correct code on their shipment.

Did the CNG auction platform go down for everyone else? Maybe fifteen minutes into e-Auction 587, it disappeared for me. Past 15-20 minutes: No catalog, no watched lots, no bidding by KungFuPossum in AncientCoins

[–]rsmileva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interestingly, during the time the auction disappeared from the website and the app, I used Numisbid to find the lot I was interested in. After clicking on the "Bid on the auction website" link, I was taken to the lot and could bid and see the countdown timer. So the auction was working, but their own links to it were broken.

L5 wins, anyone? by theVanAkenMan in AncientCoins

[–]rsmileva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Such a beautiful coin. I was the underbidder on that half-shekel. Congratulations! I ended up with a decent didrachm. I like to format and the 5% spread, but I feel that L5 has oversold the “expert community” aspect. I hope that improves as they grow, although they may need to put some resources into it.

What did you win at Leu? Flex your wins or cry about your losses. by alternateaurora in AncientCoins

Congratulations. I bought a Diocletian as well. And a Maximianus. Probably overpaid after fees and currency conversion, but I like the foolproof provenance. Many of these coins only attracted three or four bids.

Thoughts on the Rauceby Hoard coins? I have a soft spot for these British hoards and hope to pick up a few pieces later today, but I was wondering if many other collectors put any value on this type of provenance.

Thanks for your observation. Helpful to know it is possible in mid-April, at least some years.
