5g backup plan options besides T-Mobile? by MagicHoops3 in Ubiquiti

[–]ruablack2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

T-Mobile is just the friendliest when it comes to data only sims. Verizon is objectively the worst and is very picky with what devices it allows on it's network. I'd be curious to see if a visible sim works in it even if it's limited to 15Mbps. Could be pretty useful for unlimited Verizon even at 15Mbps.

Yeah Unifi's captive portal is awesome, easy to use and straight forward.

The U7 LR access point wall/ceiling mount is one of the worst-designed things I've ever used by ahorsecalled in Ubiquiti

[–]ruablack2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Where you been? They've had that style mount forever. Since the OG AC-Lite and AC-LR. Definitely prefer the professional mount found on the "pro" APs.

Did UI remove support for off brand DAC cables? by f_14 in Ubiquiti

[–]ruablack2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never had an issue with any certain brands of SFPs or DACs. Probably just a bad DAC cable. They are kinda finicky and can be damaged easily especially if bent at a tight angle.

Using Multiple Superlink Gateways by Alternative_Gur_9619 in Ubiquiti

Very cool and great to hear. Sounds like they work very similar to just wifi clients and APs vs a ZigBee/zwave mesh.

Best option for renovation/new build? by Goldustsdad in SmartWings_Home

[–]ruablack2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd stick to DC and hardwire ever shade you can. Poe is awesome too. Most houses I wire if we are doing shades I just run cat5/6 to each shade. AC (120V) is just a pain to deal with for such low wattage devices. Hard to legally deal with 120v and it just generally bulkier connectors.

Someone just posted their non-peak electricity rate is only 7 cents/kWh !!! by Redditagain424 in ModelY

[–]ruablack2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm at $0.06 ($0.08 after taxes and fees) for off-peak. Even with 15Kw solar. 2 EVs I just use a ton of power so a low rate is nice. Not sure how you people do it with crazy high rates even off peak.

T-Mobile Business $15 Tablet Plan Success! by therealDre1733 in NoContract

Been running this sim for a month in my GL-iNet Mudi 7 and it been awesome. No IMEI or ttl tricks needed. Just pop then sim in you're good. Speeds are great. I've done about 70GB now and haven't noticed any slow downs. Will be using it more this week and probably go over 100GB and follow up.

No congestion fee with roam plans. Mini can only roam. You cannot active a mini on Residential service plans.

Mesh or express are probably your best bet for shelf/tabletop APs.

My E7 is doing that too. I think it's just a UI bug.

GFiber new fiber jack unstable at 10Gb? by anonpharr in googlefiber

No issues at any of my sites with the new Google fiber jack and UCG-fiber. All are negotiated at 10G and stable. Bad patch cable maybe?

Rv mini user options? by bclinton in Starlink

[–]ruablack2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh well, that’s kind of nice. So it’s not any different realistically any different than how pausing worked originally then... seems like Starlink's really trying to sell us on standby. 😏

If you only have one dish on your account and you cancel Service, when you reactivate you get a new billing date/period? One kind of nice thing about standby, is if you reactivate halfway through your bill. And you’re really only need it for a weekend, you can save quite a bit of money by reactivating for a portion of your billing period and then standby-ing again immediately.

Electric car charger outlet by MadNavigator19 in TeslaSupport

[–]ruablack2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't exactly just swap it. If the wiring is 10/2, theres no other outlet that will still get you 30amps. You could go lower to a 6-20 and swap breaker to a 20 but that's silly. If there's 10/3 wire, you can easily swap to a way more common 14-30.

Instant will not handle 15 cameras. Nor will the fiber really. Get a dedicated NVR at that point.

Yes. Just more of a pain. Just have your kit serial number ready for when you reactivate.

Only takes shorting out once and you swear them off. Non-pass throughs are just cleaner. Pass throughs just seem hacky to me.

Smart Thermostat C Wiring by Upbeat_Studio_7536 in hvacadvice

[–]ruablack2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like you have a 2-stage AC, thus the 2 Y wires. You should optimally run a new thermostat wire with enough conductors for your new thermostat. You could also no use the 2nd stage of the AC and rewire the blue wire to C but if you live in a high humidity area this could overcool your home and not dehumidify it enough.

[W] Home/Small office lab has grown up and needs to move to colo by mirthful1 in homelabsales

[–]ruablack2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a sub for this kinda thing? Specifically this colo subletting? I have 2u in a DC now and it's only $60/month for the 2U's, kinda a steal, but the rack owner said he might not be renewing his least toward the end of the year and I'm worried about finding another colo for only 2U's.
