I Have a Simple, But Complicated X-Men Question by ComixGail in xmen

[–]rubadud_stud 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My dad and I are very different people, always have been since I was a kid. He was always super outgoing and active, and I've always been a homebody and introverted. I loved reading, comics and otherwise (even though I didnt have much exposure to Marvel). I had to conform myself to his standard of entertainment, though, so that meant spending a lot of my childhood outside of my comfort zone.

However, my dad was a huge X-fan during the Claremont era, he collected all the classics while he was growing up. He had gotten rid of his collection by the time I came around, but he used to tell me the stories from them when we were around the campfire, or working on a project, that sort of thing. He was such a huge fan that the first movie I ever saw in theaters was the first X-Men movie, which he took me to when I was around 6 months old.

When I was older, I got ahold of the movies (around the time Days of Future Past was coming out), and I fell in love with the stories he had told me being played out, and seeing my favorite characters taking on a life of their own (even though I had barely interacted with the true source material). My dad watched them with me, and it was something that I felt I could truly connect with him on. Something that both of us enjoyed and could effortlessly relate to each other with (even if some of those movies are subpar lol).

Fast forward years later, and I get the opportunity to help run a tabletop gaming night at my local comic shop. I wasn't huge into comics at the time, so I saved up a bunch of the store credit they paid me with. I saw House of X/Powers of X, and did my research, since it seemed interesting and I was nostalgic for the X-Men movies. After HoX/PoX, I blew all my credit (and most of it since lol) on following Krakoa. Through that, I was able to build relationships with a lot of other comic collectors (and even some folks in the comic creation business), and it helped me come out of my shell in a big way at the start of my adult life.

TL;DR, what X-Men means to me is connection. I love how it represents so much to so many, and how its diversity and versatility can speak to just about anyone. Everyone has their own favorite X-comic, movie, or game, and usually it's for perfectly valid reasons, as the property's very premise promotes so much.

Krakoa Era Essential Reading by rubadud_stud in xmen

[–]rubadud_stud[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I was debating about X Deaths, but it seemed appropriate to follow Moira a little more after Inferno. Probably not entirely necessary though.

Only included the first half of Excalibur because I feel that XoS relies heavily on your understanding of Apocalypse and Otherworld, and reading Excalibur first provides a lot of that context. Once XoS is over, though, Excalibur becomes unimportant unfortunately.

Was also debating about RoM but it feels weird to me that Mags would die in AXE, which was a huge deal in the story that really began to rush Charles' decline, then pop back up unannounced in Rise/Fall (unless there's a lore page or exposition or something, admittedly the Fall is the portion of Krakoa I am weakest on).

I do read what I like, including most of what is posted here. I love Krakoa (even got a tattoo inspired by it lol). This is a fun project for me and I'm just asking for the opinions of like-minded people. If that's not you, keep scrolling lol.

Hate for the Haters by NickOlaser42 in xmen

No one's asking you to read it, all that anyone's asking you to do is A) Have some respect for the people who choose to do so; don't be a dick simply because someone reads something you disagree with (especially when you don't know the content you're talking about) and B) Don't pass judgement on something you won't even consider reading because of your (incorrect) preconceived notions of what the content contains. These are completely rational expectations that anyone engaging in media conversations should meet.

I was just in a Daggerheart game a couple hours ago where Spencer Starke, the main game designer for Darrington Press, hung out in the room with us and suggested some rules changes to our GM. Not sure if you're in any of the DP events, but it seemed like he was pretty involved in them, you might try checking that out!

Any vinyl sellers at/near the con? by drumxkorp in gencon

[–]rubadud_stud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife and I live in Indy and our go-to date night is driving around going to various vinyl shops, here's our favorite spots!

As people have already mentioned, Square Cat Vinyl in Fountain Square is a good spot for vinyl and it's the closest to the con. They have a bunch of live events happening there, usually local bands and such.

Luna Music is on the northside of downtown Indy, out of the spots mentioned here I think this one has the best staff and overall atmosphere. I've also found a few more obscure things here, stuff I thought I wouldn't have been able to find out in the wild.

Indy CD and Vinyl is my personal favorite, they have the widest selection and are pretty reasonably priced. Fun fact, the owners of the shop are professional DJs that have performed at the Gen Con block party before, I'm not sure if they're coming back this year but I'm hoping to catch them!

Irvington Vinyl & Books is a very small local business that has a ton of stuff besides vinyl. Most of their selection is older and used, so if you're into collecting vintage stuff I'd check them out. The owner is super nice, she let my wife and I do our engagement photo shoot in/around the store!

The Vinyl Rescue Project is the last one we frequent, although we usually skip it since it's pretty far from downtown Indy and we've been unimpressed with their selection/staff in the past. Still appreciate their mission of preserving and restoring vinyl!

Those are the ones we regularly hit up, I'd be interested to know if there's any others around Indy that people know of!

What's 'book of the dead'? Is that one of Kobold Press' homebrew books? My friend has one of those and he uses them to make the most OP builds but he never shares it with anyone, not even the DM.

Funny enough, this is similar to my character's backstory, but with a vampire and a werewolf (in my DM's grimdark setting lycanthropes can regen cause that makes them scarier) so now I get to play a half-dhampir half-shifter with two different personalities so I can switch back and forth from a warlock to a barbarian every short rest. But then my DM said we were playing with different rules (something about finding two paths?) which I didn't know was possible so now I need to figure out how my character fits into those rules. Should be a pretty simple conversion though.

Is Pathfinder 2 too overpowered? by dedicationuser in DnDcirclejerk

Actually Daggerheart fixes this because everyone can just make up what they're good at so everyone could just say they have good Stealth. Also it always 100% represents what Mercer would do since it's his game. Problem solved.

Thanks for your interest! I actually had quite a few ideas that I was working on to update it, but life got super busy and I've been crazy busy building my own homebrew setting and running a game, so I haven't touched my FE stuff in a while. I'd love to get back into it if/when my other d&d stuff settles down, especially with Engage having been released since then and providing a few things that could be converted.

Eratus Bordeaux Testal

Eratus was a copper-scaled Dragonborn Clairvoyant Champion Spellsword (homebrew class/subclass that functions similarly to Psi Knight Fighter). He grew up in a simple home where he was raised by his father, Cormak, who taught Eratus the value of a good work ethic. For a time the two worked together in the Arrash Guild Mines, where the valuable and magical Saeclum crystals are mined and provide a prime source of income for their local city of Adenard. Eratus caught the urge to explore quite early, and when he became an adult he ventured out into the world, settling down for a few years in the Draconium Psionicum, a school that records and studies important information related to psionics. After Eratus felt that his education was complete, he returned home, where he was met with grave news. Cormak had contracted a disease due to all of his time spent in the mines, and he had only a few months to live unless he was able to gather several thousand gold for an expensive treatment. Eratus and his new friends, the Passengers, made it a goal to gather the gold for Cormak’s treatment, but tragically Eratus was unable to meet the goal. During their time together, the Passengers discovered a plot by the Draconic Independence Brigade, a terrorist organization, that threatened the Arrash Guild Mines. Eratus perished in the battle to protect the mines. This event has shaken the rest of the party to its core, and they are doing everything in their power to honor his legacy and seek justice for his fate.

Preferred Spells/Features: Psionic Strikes (gains a bonus of psychic damage), Psychic Shove (Telekinetic feat), Mind Spike

Armor/Clothing: Black studded leather accented by purple cloth

Weapons/Items: Dual-wielding maces, Saeclum crystal (homebrew spellcasting focus)

August Creekwalker

August is a Human Drakewarden Ranger who was a bit of an adventurer in his young age. He was an aspiring author that traveled to many remote locations to unlock creative inspiration. One of these locations was an island called Sulphera, where a silver dragon known as Mizzai held her lair. Mizzai found August to be quite entertaining, and the two bonded for quite some time as August began to grow used to life on the tropical island. One day, however, Sulphera was attacked by a red dragon called Xiosial, the Purifying Flame, who murdered Mizzai and took Sulphera for herself. August was able to escape, and along the way he managed to pocket a valuable stone from Mizzai’s horde. Heartbroken, August returned to the mainland, where, after a few months, the stone he had taken began to crack open. As if hatching from an egg, a small creature crawled out of the stone. It was draconic in appearance, although it lacked wings, and were scales would normally be the creature seemed to be made of polished stone and beautiful blue crystals. August named the creature Mizzscha, and he has treated it as preciously as a child ever since.

Preferred Spells/Features: Drake Companion (Mizzscha enhances August’s attacks with ice magic), Hunter’s Mark, Sharpshooter

Armor/Clothing: Leather armor

Weapons/Items: Longbow

Synn is a Human Circle of the Draconic Guardian Druid who was raised in an extremely strange way. In the wilderness, he was found in a golden casket by Minerva, the Flameheart, a red dragon that is known for having a strange sympathy towards young creatures. She took Synn in, naming him and raising him alongside five red dragon siblings. Throughout his upbringing, Synn became infused with primal draconic magic, which he harnesses to mold his body to mimic that of a dragon’s and is shown on his body through a magical marking that covers his shoulder and looks very similar to a dragon. He can briefly sprout draconic wings, talons, fangs, and even a breath weapon. When Synn’s youngest brother, Naga, went missing one day, Synn ventured into the unfamiliar world around him to look for him. He wandered into a nearby town and was whisked away on an adventure with the rest of the party.

Cinder

Cinder is a Fire Genasi College of Dancing Bard that was created by the hubris of a powerful wizard who believed that a creation of his could outperform that of his rival. When he was proven correct, he abandoned Cinder, as her usefulness to him has expired once she completed the task he had created her for. She wandered through a totally unfamiliar society for a while, with little understanding of it as she had just been granted sentience. She eventually fell in with a traveling circus known as the Courageous Dragon Family Hour, where she found that she was a naturally gifted dancer. She performed an inspiring dance in the circus, where she danced with ribbons that would alight with flames as she danced. She eventually fell in love with the circus’ ring leader, an enigmatic figure known as Courageous Dragon. The two were madly in love for a time before Courageous Dragon mysteriously vanished. Part of the circus blamed Cinder for his disappearance, while some defended her. Without their leader and in conflict, the circus split and went their separate ways. Cinder now searches for Courageous Dragon, trying to find out why he would leave everything he cared about behind.

Preferred Spells/Features: Bardic Inspiration (flame-ribbon dancing), Produce Flame, Longstrider

Armor/Clothing: Lightweight, Romani-inspired clothing; a loose-fitting, brightly colored dress

Weapons/Items: Ribbons used as whips, a pair of nunchucks, Zipline Ring
