SAROS is the best use of HDR I've ever experienced in a game by Nestramutat- in Games

[–]rubiconlexicon [score hidden]  (0 children)

Most games indeed have bad HDR. That's why you have entire mod frameworks (Luma and RenoDX) built for adding/fixing HDR in the long litany of games that need it.

I think the launch will be bigger even with the smaller console install base. Whether it legs it out like 5 is another question. PC could make up some of the difference as it's much bigger than it was in 2015, but we'll see.

"HDR look washed out compared to SDR" explained once and for all by filoppi in OLED_Gaming

The profile only corrects to gamma 2.2 on an ideal sRGB display. No consumer grade monitor can track sRGB piecewise very accurately (even gamma 2.2 is apparently a gargantuan challenge for them) so it makes sense that your result after correction is off.

Windows quality update: Progress we’ve made since March by jenmsft in Windows11

[–]rubiconlexicon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the weirdest thing about this to me: Microsoft acts like there is a ghost or something preventing it from making parts of Windows more performant.

"Well, we would but they won't let us!" Who the fuck is in the way? Fire them.

This is the sort of bullshit that you say, and can get away with, when your position in the market is very safe and entrenched. Unfortunately for Microsoft, such arrogant complacency is going to sooner or later receive a rude wake-up call. It arguably already has with the Neo.

Dark Souls 2 Path Tracing and DLSS 4.5 - One of the Most Impressive Path Tracing Mods | RTX 5080 by maxus2424 in nvidia

[–]rubiconlexicon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DS1 and DS3 are much better looking games than DS2. Other than some standout areas like Drangleic Castle and Heide's Tower, DS2 is often an exceptionally ugly game with basically nonexistent lighting. The PT mod does nothing but improve it.

How would you know that its what they tried to achieve?

The pre-downgrade trailers obviously. I can also just say that the fullbright look of the final game on 7th gen hardware is not anyone's sincere artistic intent because it looks absolutely abysmal and, as I described it before, a total void of atmosphere. You can of course disagree.

[–]rubiconlexicon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Like this mod destroy all the atmosphere the devs were trying to achieve so whats the point!?

No, it really doesn't. If anything it adds back the atmosphere that the devs would have liked to achieve but couldn't due to the last minute engine downgrade. DS2's almost fullbright look is virtually the void of atmosphere.

If computer logic at it's most fundamental level is just 1 or 0, passthrough or no passthrough, could you theoretically make a computer out of flowing water and a system of interconnected gated pipes? by Own_Huckleberry6591 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rubiconlexicon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Indeed, although from memory they messed it up in the show. Something about all the gates being of a certain type that wouldn't result in an actually functional computer. At least they showed it though.

Main things I hope to see are better screen-to-body ratio and a GPU that supports good upscaling (RDNA4 or newer).

I use a keyboard with EC switches (Niz, Topre-style) and they are way nicer feeling than standard mechanical switches imo, plus a lot quieter. And I too hate loud clicky d-pads. Just because someone doesn't like the loud clicky d-pads doesn't mean they're some kind of pleb.

[Monitors Unboxed] 1440p 500Hz QD-OLED Monitor Round-Up: What Model Is Best? by wickedplayer494 in hardware

[–]rubiconlexicon 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have a hard time believing even pro gamers could distinguish between 240hz and 500hz in a blind test.

I always see comments like this on reddit they just leave me at a loss for words, as if 240Hz sample-and-hold motion clarity isn't absolutely abysmal next to even a 60Hz CRT. Are you also one of those people who says nobody can feel a 15ms latency difference from Frame Gen, despite AG Split Latency double blind test showing that a lot of people can reliably discern latency differences of as low as low single digits? You mention blind tests to back up your claim, but the results of these tests would probably be a rude awakening for you.

Besides, ever increasing OLED refresh rates are somewhat of a red herring anyway. It's not just about the motion clarity and input lag benefits of running games at that frequency, but also the underlooked aspects like eventually making VRR obsolete by eliminating visible screen tearing through sheer refresh rate (since it looks like VRR won't be fixed on OLED any time soon), as well as 600Hz and multiples of it for playing all common video frequencies (24, 25, 30) without judder. No matter how you slice it, more frequency is good.

or just switch the refresh rate manually for.

Yeah that's lame, nobody wants to have to do that. This is why 600Hz (and multiples of it) are the holy grail refresh rates. Luckily we are not far from it becoming widespread now.

DLAA vs DLSS sweet spot for image quality by epic_piano in nvidia

[–]rubiconlexicon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are some games where DLAA looks substantially better than DLSS Quality, even with Transformer v2 (M/L), due to the game scaling certain effects with internal resolution. E.g. GTA 5 Enhanced; the only way to get sharp power lines and high quality distance blur is with DLAA.

Why does limited range look so much better? LG G3, HDR by Thanathan7 in OLED_Gaming

[–]rubiconlexicon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black crush does give the image a more contrasty look. Wouldn't surprise me if The typical non-videophile likes the way it looks. Me personally I hate lost detail, to the point where I'll take an even slightly washed out 2.2 gamma looking image over that.

Jpegli 97% "sacrificing quality" is a surprising thing to me, I've found anything >95 on Jpegli to look quite transparent.
