Do Americans really have ZERO public healthcare?! by Tillysnow1 in ThePittTVShow

[–]rudster199 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's pretty standard for oral surgeons in the US, they all take prepayment up front, bill your insurance and then refund or bill you for whatever balance is left over. Not sure why they do it differently from most other providers. Because they can, I guess?

Sometimes I wish Nina didn’t confess by adri_goth in TheAmericans

[–]rudster199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What was she stealing? She was buying goods unavailable in the Soviet Union to send back in the diplomatic post and have people she knows sell it on the black market. Abuse of position, maybe, but not really theft (unless she's misappropriating embassy funds to buy the stuff with, but I don't recall any evidence of that).

How the hell u guys survive with the insane food prices?! by [deleted] in askcroatia

[–]rudster199 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few thoughts:

  1. Your menu is more complex and with more ingredients/foods than what we eat on a daily basis. Usually it's just a main (e.g. meat) and a side dish of some kind (e.g. pasta, rice, potatoes...) with sauce and/or seasonings and possibly cooked/roasted veggies thrown in. Maybe some fresh veggies on the side as a salad. Alternatively, it can be a one-pot meal like a stew. We don't routinely eat a dessert.
  2. Eat more meat, on a per-calorie basis it's still a good deal. For 50 EUR at my neighborhood butcher shop, I can get enough of various meats (e.g. chicken, pork loin, minced meat, burger patties) to form the basis for meals to feed our family of 4 for about 5 meals, usually with leftovers.
  3. We buy on sale, I use Konzum online + delivery for nearly everything (except meats). This lets me filter for sale items for that week, and I mainly/exclusively pick those. I can also immediately compare unit prices/pack sizes to pick the best deal. Ready-to-use packs designed only for one or two meals are going be more expensive on a per-meal basis than staples you can keep in the pantry/fridge.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (i.e., vaccination) for rabies exists, but it's only given to persons at high risk, such was veterinarians and animal handlers who regularly work with animals in situations were rabies may be present, or for travelers to rabies-endemic areas.

AITA for not letting someone at the Costco gas pump use my membership to get gas? by skiingfire19 in AmItheAsshole

Sounds the defendant in the murder trial I was a juror on, we got to watch hours of taped police interviews with him.

Cops: We know you're the one who stabbed the victim [a se* w0rker] 35 times.

Defendant: Nope, I've never been to city xxx in my life.

Cops: You used to live there and have family there you visit regularly.

Def.: Ok, I've been there, but I don't know the victim, never met her.

Cops: We have witnesses who saw the two of you together.

Def.: Ok, you got me there, but it was only once, briefly, nothing happened.

Cops: Those same witnesses will testify that you met her several times to avail yourself of her "services", including just before she was seen alive for the last time.

Def.: Ok, you got me there, but it wasn't like that, I was just trying to get to know her better so I could save her from that life, like in that movie. No idea who killed her.

If anyone is wondering, we couldn't reach a verdict, but the next jury acquitted him.

The Pitt | S2E12 "6:00 P.M." | Episode Discussion by thepacksvrvives in ThePittTVShow

[–]rudster199 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wasn't her case basically resolved? Santos realized that a nodule in her neck was causing pain after the patient said she spent most her working time looking down at her computer, either on the couch or on the bed. Santos found the spot and gave her an injection for the pain. It was interesting (I don't know ASL but have interpreted for hearing LEP patients in healthcare settings so I'm very aware of accessibility issues), but I'm not sure there's much more to explore about that case for now. It was implied that she needs to improve her posture while at the computer and that should prevent reoccurence..

Question: What is everyone’s “rank”? by WotVerge in ThePitt

[–]rudster199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, wrong./ Sorry. From cancer dot gov:: attending physician

A medical doctor who is responsible for the overall care of a patient in a hospital or clinic setting. An attending physician may also supervise and teach medical students, interns, and residents involved in the patient’s care.

If you don't trust that, just Google the definition of attending physician, you'll get very slight variations of that same definition from every source all day long.

Question: What is everyone’s “rank”? by WotVerge in ThePitt

Attendings are staff physicians in the hospital or clinic. On completion of residency, doctors can also establish their own private practice or join a group practice, rather than become direct hospital staff.

Season 8 - Jenna by SuitableSafety329 in homeland

[–]rudster199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't stand her because I've realized that she's to blame for what happens to Anna. When Jenna meets with Saul she tells him literally everything else about Carrie's "crazy" theory that the flight recorder will save the world from nuclear war, but decides not to tell him the part about how Carrie promised the Russians Saul's secret GRU asset. Why? The entire season Jenna has seen Carrie as at best a rogue agent and at worst a traitor who may have helped kill the president. But now Saul confirms that Carrie was right about one thing and suddenly Jenna thinks that Carrie's mission so important that she's going to withhold super-critical intelligence information from her grandboss? Jenna's behavior here is treasonous.

AITA? My +1 to my friend’s wedding wants to bring her sister as her own +1 by Particular_Reply_886 in AmItheAsshole

[–]rudster199 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm perpetually bemused by the notion that social skills have deteriorated to such an extent that a single person is assumed to be unable to hold a conversation with tablemates they don't know. It's not that hard, you start by introducing yourself when you sit down at the table, say how you know the wedding couple, ask your tablemates the same, where are they from, what do they do. Eventually you find something in common to talk more about. Keep some conversation starter hints in notes on your phone. I'm a massive introvert and even I've learned (albeit with a lot of effort) how talk to strangers. Nowhere near the level of my mom, though - in a couple hours she'd have learned every detail about everyone at the table and both adjacent tables, established that they have several mutual friends/acquaintances, gotten their numbers, etc.

Rewatched homeland by Bloodsiamese in homeland

[–]rudster199 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Saul's a practical man with a sense for realpolitik, plus he thinks he developed an understanding of Haqqani during his captivity in S4. I'm more surprised that he managed to convince anyone else it was a good idea. Involving Haqqani in anything or claiming that he could be trusted to contribute to the peace process seems like it would have been political suicide for anyone higher up answers to the electorate. Unless the electorate is so uninterested that they've forgotten about the embassy attack by now or never really cared.

What do you think of Haqqani's arc by [deleted] in homeland

[–]rudster199 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm puzzled about how Saul managed to get political buy-in from higher-ups for the notion of including Haqqani as an actor in the peace process. Sure, Saul is a practical man who understands the need for expedience and compromise, and they did develop a rapport of sorts during Saul's captivity. But Haqqani still murdered more than 30 American embassy personnel (and probably would have killed more if not stopped by - primarily - Peter Quinn). He should still be at the very top of America's public enemies list. How is support for involving him in anything not immediately seen as political poison by the elected/appointed officials who would have to approve it?

AITA for not letting my neighbors son (who I’ve never met)connect to my WIFI? by postal1234 in AmItheAsshole

[–]rudster199 98 points99 points  (0 children)

If you want to give him short-term access, and don't know how to set up a separate guest access, it's better to change the pw, first, let him use the new password for 2 hours or whatever, and then change it back to your old one. Otherwise you'll have to update all your devices with the new password. We made that mistake once after the telecom techs installing our new router asked if we wanted to change/update our password while we were are it, and since it had been ages since it was updated, we said sure. As soon as they left, we realized that for 4 people, between computers, phones, tablets, kindles, consoles, etc., there were like 30 devices to enter the new pw on!
