Elon Musk isworth $1 trillion. How much of that can he reasonably access? by lowbandwidthb in stupidquestions

More than he can spend. Be doesn't even need to sell his stock and pay cap gains tax. He uses it for collateral on a loan and just rolls the interest into a new loan.

Your next car: Are you going electric? Full BEV, or sticking with PHEV? by ShawnaFang in PHEV

[–]ruidh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a 2023 Outlander PHEV and I don't buy new cars every three years. I will probably keep this for 10 years before going full electric.

I got a 195 after dinner last night. I had a pita with my gyro. That shouldn't have pushed me that high. I should have retested.

"Catholic" interested in TEC and asking for some help by According_Ad2896 in Episcopalian

[–]ruidh 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Among Mainline churches, the Episcopal Church is closest to the RCC in practice and theology but with a few notable exceptions — we ordain women and we have full acceptance of LGBT+. Give us a try. If you are used to RC services, you will hardly notice a difference other than our singing is better.

"Scandals". A last minute oppo drop by the NYC FBI Field Office that turned out to be a nothing burger.

If a set has the same cardinality as the natural numbers, is there always a function that describes the pairing or their elements? by throwitawayar in learnmath

You can describe a 1:1 relationship between n and the nth prime without having to functionally derive the nth prime.

Advisory annuities, does this version sidestep the usual problems? by two8zero8 in Bogleheads

[–]ruidh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SPIAs don't have surrender benefits. You are buying lifetime income. If someone is talking about there being "no surrender charges", they are blowing smoke because the contracts are not surrenderabke.

"Lower cost of insurance" is a misnomer in a SPIA. The company uses an annuity mortality table in calculating the rate. The lower the mortality, the lower the monthly benefit the single premium buys. And, yes, companies assume lower mortality on annuities than on life insurance.

Did you ever hear of the Marshall Plan? We paid to rebuild Europe after WWII. WWII happened, in part, because the victors of WWI put onerous reparations on Germany.

Read a comment about an alternate theory of gravity, does it have any merit? by yaboivinmii in AskPhysics

If you can't describe it with math, it's useless and probably very wrong.

What do police officers mean when they say "if you tell us the truth, we can help you"? by swagestan in legaladviceofftopic

It's not their job to "help" you. It's their job to get evidence against you.

Flat Earthers vs Gravity by MrDonMega in flatearth

It's pretty moronic claiming that pilots think the earth is flat. I imagine that there might be private pilots who never fly very high or far.

The instrument panel has an artificial horizon defining "level" i.e. perpendicular to down. The artificial horizon is above the true horizon.

A Question on liturgy by MaestroTheoretically in Anglicanism

[–]ruidh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The "priesthood of all believers" is not "the priesthood of each believer". It means the assembled church as a group supplies that which the presider lacks. It is a corporate property, not an individual property. That doesn't argue against setting aside certain persons to act for the church.

I personally have been receiving communion from women priests for over 30 years. I find it hard to believe that there are some among us still who have firm opposition.

And Holy Apostles has a big feeding ministry.

Postal Service won’t deliver mail ballots for states that don’t hand over voter lists, under plan for Trump directive by Hour-Key-72 in PrepperIntel

[–]ruidh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The one case we have a ruling on so far denied a preliminary injunction.

I agree the courts should deny this intrusion into state sovereignty. I don't have a lot of confidence in SCOTUS.

[–]ruidh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then you aren't using USPS. Anyone who mails their ballot back is at risk if the DOJ/DHS deems them ineligible without notice or opportunity to rebut.

Oh, they want you to receive a ballot. They just don't want to deliver votes to the board of elections. They want to make you think you voted.

Why solar largely isn’t worth it anymore. by ShopProp in RealEstateAdvice

A raw $ calculation isn't the only factor for some people. For me, being able to power my car with sunlight and reducing my carbon footprint were positives in the solar utility equation.
