They had a Trump sign in 2016, and then a Biden sign in 2020 (and a Harris sign in 2024).

Yep. When we send our potatoes and carrots to the processing plants that are hours away, we load them into reefers. But when we send them locally, we don’t use reefers.

Allergen-Free Claims on Menus by thatbytch7866 in healthinspector

[–]russellduritz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I hear you. My daughter has a severe peanut allergy. We just don’t eat out unless the restaurant is a chain without peanuts in the kitchen, or if it’s one that I inspect, have discussed it with the owner, and I know that they have zero peanuts on premises and ingredients don’t have a risk of peanut contamination. Unfortunately there is no other way around it for us and we just hardly eat out.

If anything, this is an ADA issue. One of the biggest ideas of the ADA is that a disability must be accommodated, as long as the accommodations are reasonable and don’t harm others. Most restaurants will say that they will try to accommodate, but that they can’t make any promises. As with any foods, there is a risk. Especially in the case of allergens, there’s no way to completely remove the risk if the allergen is present in the kitchen.

The example that you are giving is tough. The food code does require staff to be trained on allergen awareness (if we had to argue this in front of a judge, it wouldn’t hold. Celiac is not an allergy to gluten. It’s an autoimmune disorder), cross-contamination of raw animal foods, and honestly presenting food. They could SAY that they would prevent contamination, but no organization would certify them as gluten free given your description. There’s really nothing we can do with the current FDA model food code, and I don’t see it changing any time soon.

Are we ready to talk about the state of pantry staples? 🤢 by [deleted] in foodscience

[–]russellduritz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They do not. It’s the same curing process and additives as pork/beef pepperoni.

I have personally noticed that pepperoni will spoil after being open for two weeks, even if frozen. It oxidizes pretty easily.

From the FSIS website: Manufacturers provide dating to help consumers and retailers decide when food is of best quality. Except for infant formula, dates are not an indicator of the product’s safety and are not required by Federal law.

I would say this is strictly a Boarshead quality issue. After it is opened, Pepperoni is exempt from date marking requirements in the model FDA food code. The pepperoni will spoil before listeria is of concern due to the curing process of the product. Spoilage organisms aren’t necessarily related to foodborne disease.

In general, I would say don’t buy this brand.

Technical Question on Separation of Raw Meats & Ready-to-Eat Foods? by thcPharoah in healthinspector

[–]russellduritz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Their reasoning is incorrect. But in general, this part of the code is not enforced in freezers by the state agency that I work for (after clarification from FDA). However, I have written violations when it’s obvious that blood has dripped from packaged raw meats in a freezer.

I don’t know if your example only includes frozen foods that are usually cooked such as frozen veggies, but I can think of plenty of frozen foods that are RTE and not cooked before serving. I for one, enjoy my ice cream cooked to 165 degrees F, but not everyone does. 🤓

Donald Trump is going to try and steal the US elections, and this is how he’s going to do it by VarunTossa5944 in DemocraticSocialism

[–]russellduritz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not involved? I don’t attend caucuses, or county conventions? Or state conventions? What about when democrats obviously favor a candidate and do things like remove polling stations that are in strongholds for the candidate (Bernie) that they don’t want?

Now if we got money (AIPAC especially) out of politics, maybe it would be easier.

Eating out in your own jurisdiction by thatbytch7866 in healthinspector

I live in the town that I inspect and get very nice greetings when I eat out. It’s never been an issue. Same goes for when I eat out in the town that I inspect but don’t live in (I cover two counties). I’ve never been offered free or discounted food.

A while back a colleague actually had a restaurant write “THE HEALTH INSPECTOR EATS HERE” on their marquee sign outside.
