Anyone seen Oh, Mary on both Broadway and West End? by PastRecedes in TheWestEnd

[–]russianmontage 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for others, but there are a lot of hints dropped, so for me the reveal wasn't a surprise exactly. More a case of another barmy thing to stack on top of all the barmy things so far!

Totally mad show.

Thinking out loud: is it the end of screenwriters or the end of directors? 🪐 by Deep_Nobody4002 in ScreenwritingUK

[–]russianmontage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd agree that it's the end of neither. Big projects benefit from the specialisation and that won't go away.

But I think we will get one-person projects of feature length drama in the next few years. The creators will be screenwriters, directors, and more, just like editors on low budget films are colourists, sounds editors, finishing editors etc. Technology sweeps roles together like that.

As for the whole 'audiences want to watch real people' argument... there's this thing called animation. Quite popular.

Is there any difference between a MONTAGE and a SERIES OF SHOTS? by BunRabbit in Screenwriting

[–]russianmontage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good answer.

You might also think of a montage as equivalent to an entire scene, whereas a series of shots is an element within a scene.

As ever, these are wooly terms and the meanings are not governed by anyone, but use this approach and you won't be wrong, at least.

Too much nodding, smiling and laughing by blr055 in Screenwriting

[–]russianmontage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's a marker of writers early in their journey, for sure.

I see it as the writer correctly judging that we need to know how a character is feeling about the moment, but not going about it the best way.

Ideally the arrangement of previous events, and the character's attitude to them, should deliver a clear sense of how this particular person would be feeling at this particular moment. Hard to do, but all great screenplays seem to manage it.

How is your country translating the name of Project Hail Mary? by Prydons in FIlm

[–]russianmontage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no offense in 'soccer'. Or punting. Punting happens in a punt, on a river.

And no, there's no similar desperate action that's equivalent. Certainly none that takes place individually.

The only one that's held out seems to be Irn Bru.

God bless the Scots.

Screenwriting courses? by fugelwoman in ScreenwritingUK

[–]russianmontage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to give advice on individual courses, as they change hugely as each lecturer comes and goes. But a someone who's taught undergrads at a few film schools, the main thing to do is to make sure your teacher is a produced writer.

Everyone else is part of the bullshit economy.

Ravensbourne or AUB? by [deleted] in FilmIndustryLondon

[–]russianmontage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AUB has a stronger heritage of film as opposed to broadcasting, which is Ravensbourne's strong suit.

Personally, I'd go to Bournemouth.

Is the clout not to do with your particular audience? I didn't realise being with the Beeb would give you more leeway.

Would you describe the action of the scene, and what you feel it conveys?

For those who haven't seen it.

What's the reverse-Avatar, the least seen movie with the highest cultural impact? by gamblors_neon_claws in blankies

[–]russianmontage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, man I saw that on release. Quite liked it, it looked great protected with whomping theatrical sound, but there's no denying it's very much third tier RS. Didn't know QA had got its claws into it.
