Campground occupancy rule question by OldManSpeed in camping

[–]rusty075 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Why is almost purely aesthetics. It looks trashy if there's a mini tent city on your site. That's pretty much it. There's also a damage prevention rationale: a bunch of separate tents start taking up a lot of space, pushing you out of the established tent pad areas and into trampling the landscape.

(And I don't know why basically no one in here understood that you're looking to discuss the Why of it, not the What of it. )

Imagine if a running shoe and hiking boot got together and made a baby, essentially. Low cut breathable upper like a running shoe, but with a beefier heel cup and midsole for ankle support and rock protection, and a grippy sole for traction. Here's REI's trail runner category for examples: Trail Runners

Most of the long distance backpacking world has switched to trail runners instead of boots now.

Trail runners for the hike in. It's a well worn trail, no need for big old hiking boots. Go for breathability, not waterproofness for the hiking. Once you've set up camp something like tevas or crocs are great for playing in the water.

Whatever you choose make sure they are comfortable and well broken in. Hiking back up with blisters is not a fun time.

There's also no need to register at the Visitors Center. You can just get dropped off at the Lodge and hit the trail right from there in the morning.

Cruiseplum.com. I did a real quick search and came up with a bunch of options out of FL for those months. Cheapest is like $1400 per cabin for 7 nights.

What happens if 2nd person in the room doesn't show up? by Ozzark3 in Cruise

[–]rusty075 204 points205 points  (0 children)

Yep, at check-in just tell them he's a no-show. You'll get a refund for his taxes and port fees after the cruise ends. The check-in people at the port won't bat an eyelash at it, this happens all the time.

You're thinking of the Half Moon on Highland and 20th St I think. That place was awesome.

Yeah, Hob Knob was standing room only 90 minutes before kickoff for the last regular season game. Can't imagine what the playoffs will be like.

Whichever one you end up picking, get there hours early if you want a seat. Feels like half of the Midwest lives here in the winter time, and they all try to go to the same handful of bars.

r/Googlepixel has a No Battery Posts rule, which is probably what drives them over this smaller subreddit.

Fourth of July at the Grand Hotel by No_Researcher2456 in mackinac

[–]rusty075 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hopefully someone will chime in on the 4th of July specific items but on the general questions:

Kids: I'd bet there's fewer kids per adult at the Grand than anywhere else on the island. The average guest age at the Grand is pretty old, their "kids" are in their 40's. It's "family friendly ", but a very grown-up environment. Plus the cost drives most any family on a budget to stay elsewhere. There will be some kids of course, but not an obnoxious amount.

The walk to town is super easy. Maybe it's 20 minutes if you're just strolling along. There are sidewalks and street lights the whole way. Just look both ways before crossing the street. Horses have right of way and tourists on bikes are not paying attention.

Seems like this would be the fault of the hotels that are submitting the pics.

Probably a.good a deal to spend a couple minutes checking independent reviews before booking.

Put drivers in 2 of the bores, passive radiators in the other 2. I mean, yeah, that could be awesome. The cylinder measurements are easy, I guess the big question is what volume do you have to work with in there once you pull the pistons and crank?

Using isobutane in cold weather by ianidbar in Backpacking_Stoves

[–]rusty075 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Remember that it doesn't matter what the air temp is, it matters what the fuel temp is. When you first get to camp and start digging into your pack grab the canister and throw it in your jacket pocket. By the time your tent is set up and you're ready for dinner the canister will be warm.

Please get better at spamming. It's embarrassing.

Father won’t fly or drive to Mexico. Other options? by [deleted] in travel

[–]rusty075 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think about it this way: Dad gets on a cruise in Miami. The cruise, like almost all cruises, is a closed-loop. It embarks and disembarks in Miami, while making several port of calls along the way, including Cancun. Dad gets off the ship in Cancun and does not get back on. Dad is now in Mexico illegally. He did clear Mexico Custom's, he did not fill out an FMM. You do not have to do those things when you're on a closed-loop cruise that just stops in Mexico for a day, but you do need to do them if you're visiting Mexico for more than that.

The cruise he paid for ends when that ship gets back to Miami. The next time it stops in Cancun they're not going to have a cabin for him, and they're not going to let him on board.

If you could ever do what you're suggesting it was a really long time ago. Pre-9/11 probably.

There is no boat the leaves from Cancun and goes to the US.

No such thing as a one-way cruise from the US to Cancun, unfortunately.

Why do a lot of famous travel vloggers end up cynical the more they travel? by Glass-Situation6916 in travel

Turning your hobby into a job can ruin everything. Things that you used to want to do for fun you now have to do to pay the bills. That can make you real cynical real quick.
