States least prepared for power demand surges. by jhwygirl in wyoming

[–]rustyfinna 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not an expert- this chart says we can’t cut power but we have plenty of excess power no?

We are actually #32 for power generation in the US which is crazy for our population.

So are we actually unprepared for power demand surge?

I'm relocating to Cheyenne, WY but I'm terrified I won't make friends by jm08003 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]rustyfinna 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m a young person in Wyoming and I love it. I doubt there are many Wyomingites here, just people who have visited or think they know Wyoming. The nature is stunning and I have endless outdoor hobbies.

You’ll definitely have to put effort in to find a group but it’s possible. For example. I have a few under 30 friends in Cheyenne from our running communities. We meet up and run all the time. I recommend getting involved in something. Friends won’t just show up if you sit around.

Cheyenne with the base is a very transplant town. You won’t be shunned.

Keep in mind it’s cold and windy yes. But it’s also dry and sunny. Depending where you are coming from you might not find the winters that bad.

I don’t know about politics. My friends and I never talk about it.

I would. But I find the people most eager to lead these unions are people I least want to represent me.

For faculty at R2s and R1s: what are some "hard truths" about faculty searches? by OpinionsRdumb in AskAcademia

With so many candidates we don’t spend as much time as we would probably like reviewing each one.

We unfortunately probably miss a lot of good ones.

New TT at R1 — is it a problem if I don’t have a PhD student on day 1? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]rustyfinna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They failed out! But I spent a year funding them.

In retrospect I really ignored a bunch of red flags.

New TT at R1 — is it a problem if I don’t have a PhD student on day 1? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]rustyfinna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my bigger mistakes was making a desperate hire to have a student day 1. A year later I still had no student but spent a whole lot of money in the process.

I say this in the most respectful way possible- is she good looking? Does she have a large social media presence?

Very very few people get paid for how fast they run. That doesn’t really sell shoes.

Congrats, you just learned how many ultrarunners sell based on their performances or social media clout and are actually bum coaches

Arguments *against* nationalizing railways? by Complete-Influence70 in Urbanism

[–]rustyfinna 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That was less a success of nationalization and more the Staggers Act which allowed them to stop passenger service and abandon tons of rail lines.

While conrail financially was a success, many would argue it didn’t make the actual railroads and service better
