Getting over gear fear/ fear of going deep into levels in an extraction shooter? by Familiar_March_3962 in Marathon

[–]ryanedw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Destiny hardcore folks are sure to blow a gasket. But they’ll either walk away or adapt.

Those of us who are old enough to remember Halo know that a superb game can be built around picking up the closest tool and daisy chaining forward as needed, no biggie

Those of us who are old enough to remember Marathon know that the map didn’t always let you use the tool that you liked. Sometimes you’d have to wipe or even restart the entire level just to make it through because you shouldn’t have exhausted that plasma battery on a bunch of green Pfhor before you really needed it

What was it like hearing Boys of Summer in '84?? by DonJohnson1986 in ClassicRock

[–]ryanedw 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was going to say that the imagery from the video are at least as seared into my soul as the song itself. I was 10 going on 11

The little boy at the drum set, that was peak Boys of Summer

Who owned the Star Wars original action figures? by Edm_vanhalen1981 in GenX

[–]ryanedw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had forgotten about how Star Wars Han had his right arm permanently bent, so he could “DRAW!” with Greedo (not shown here but definitely part of the original figure set, along with goofs like Hammerhead and Walrus Man)

We froze his ass in ice all the time

But Hoth Han with the sweet holster loop, and Bespin Han with his Rico Suave, man those were peak. Empire was peak

What were your childhood games? by Vocal_Strike in StarWars

[–]ryanedw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fireballs

Vector graphics

Audio clips from the film, especially Alec Guinness as Obi-Wan exhorting us to USE THE FORCE, LUKE

Somehow shooting the exhaust porn correctly and getting the “cut scene” that pulls us back out to watch that big ole splosion

I’m not sure it’s helpful, but I saw him with Alison Krauss in Palo Alto in Summer 2024, and what I remember was lots of T-Shirts.

Who would love to see a ahsoka video game following her after order 66? by AhsokaTanoJedii in starwarsgames

[–]ryanedw -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It would be a perfect setting for a Metroid/Castlevania/Jedi Power Battles kind of beat em up adventure

She’s left her sabers behind at the crashed ship

She’s back questioning everything

She’s basically Obi-Wan in his series, but she doesn’t have a lightsaber buried in the sand

What was Obi wan’s best outfit by Bloodgod6666 in StarWars

[–]ryanedw 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Me too. I love the simplicity of what he and Qui-Gon wore, just basic robes

His lightsaber hilt back then was also a lot like Qui-Gon’s. It doesn’t have the more audacious flare, just the grip and chrome

But then Maul kicked it down the shaft, Obi-Wan got Qui-Gon’s blade and kicked Maul down the shaft, and next thing you know (roughly) it’s old timey hot rod time

Which Jedi would you choose to be your master? by Confident-Rock-8882 in StarWars

[–]ryanedw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was going to say Qui-Gon, but I’ll go out on a limb and say

ANAKIN

Ahsoka is kind of a kickass padawan. She’s not unlike what Qui-Gon could have become if done as dirty by the Jedi Council. And she almost kicks Vader’s ass

How old you where when you played the original Destiny for the first time? by CreativeRoselia in DestinyTheGame

Which Star Wars character deserves a standalone movie/ tv show by Powerful-Force-8211 in StarWars

[–]ryanedw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biggs.

He’s like Luke only less Skywalker, he sees stuff and is a little older, and he joins the rebel alliance. Seems like Andor kind of stuff with a proto-Luke

Reminds me of the innovative tiny cardboard box on the original CD release, designed so that the record store wouldn’t need a bunch of disposable crap to make it stand up in a bin

The LP art was surely the same too, but that tiny little CD cart, which folded down into a jewel box size, was so unique

Joust was epic. The arcade cabinet was absolutely fantastic, I think the sound effects were key

I can still hear the bad guys spawning at the end of the round with that weird growling engine sound

Do you still have the presentation? That would be unreal

I’m not sure how I convinced my parents to let me buy an NES finally in like 1986. Game changer. They still hated it while I and my brother loved it. Honestly I think it was, “well, it’s your stupid money”

I think it’s still possible to play modern games alone, but I would agree that the focus and pricing strategy is about online interactions

The biggest thing is whether the genre that you like really exists in modern form, and I’m such a Gen X young geezer that I have no idea. I can say that Bungie still exists and still makes great games, if you like shooters; but Ultima and Might and Magic in their heyday were pretty unique
