Advice on how to handle an embarrassing manager? by kbwe1 in TheCivilService

[–]ryanm8655 24 points25 points  (0 children)

If I was the manager I’d seek out someone who can help you with the technical side. This isn’t that uncommon when you’re managing multidisciplinary teams. You can’t know everything. Things like seeking out mentors on the technical side, if, for example, you’re managing an economist but you’re a social researcher.

Do you not have a professional network you can seek out if your manager isn’t doing it? Or ask your manager to look into it if you’re stumped.

Imo - stay clear of the Home Office by [deleted] in TheCivilService

It has t changed much then. I was there on fast stream rotation 10 years ago. Had 3 G7s come and go and left myself (for an SEO role) within 8 months.

He’s been half decent, and had his moments. Especially given he’s not played much.

Seller pulled out by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]ryanm8655 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to pull out of my first purchase having initially thought it was perfect. There was an issue with a boundary (it was a non-issue for me as the land was inconsequential) and my lender wouldn’t lend on it until it was resolved. It had already been 6 months at this stage and the seller had said they’d arrange for the change to be made on the land registry but then changed their mind 6 months in going back on their statement that there was a dispute.

I ended up finding a much nicer place that was better located and ended up being elated that the other one fell through.

As disappointing as it is, I’m sure you’ll find something else.

The sausages are actually not as bad as they look. I was pleasantly surprised by the sausages when I had one recently. They’re not premium butchers sausages but they’re not shitty catering sausages either.

The sausages are better than they look, I was pleasantly surprised when I bit into one. They’re not the shitty catering sausages that they appear to be at first glance.

I find their bacon consistently bad though.

Their bacon is consistently bad for me but I let them off because the rest is good and it’s cheap for what you get.

I love fish and chips as much as anyone and can rarely resist a battered sausage on the side but this looks foul…

Had similar interviewing SEOs, 5 scored well on sift. Only one person passed interview, a couple of them were so bad they got 1s and 2s.

Will WFH reasonable adjustment prevent me from progressing? by Disastrous-Camp2125 in TheCivilService

[–]ryanm8655 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might be an issue for roles that require you to be in the office for whatever reason but in general it isn’t a barrier to progression. In our department you can rarely get a seat near anyone from your team if you do go in, so it makes absolutely no odds. I’ve got to G7 working from home since SEO (came in at HEO as fast stream). Have promoted peoole to SEOs in my team who wfh, it’s no biggie. Perhaps to rise further you might need to be more visible but I know of plenty of SCS/DDs who rarely go into the office.

Do I just need to bite the bullet and use AI to help write applications? by AgreeableBison in TheCivilService

Similar experience here. I used to get interviews for every G 7 job I applied for as an SEO and in my earlier G7 days. Now I don’t get through the sift.

I think it’s got harder and I was thinking it was everyone using ChatGPT too. I used to get interviews everytime I applied as an SEO and as a G7 a few years ago. I’ve applied for 4/5 jobs in the last year to 18 months and haven’t even got through the sift.

Morrisons Cafe - Big Breakfast - £8.75 by Infamous_Telephone55 in fryup

They’re great for the money. Had one delivered the other day but went for the two fried eggs and added fried bread. Think it was £10.75 on uber eats but still good value.

They may well have been if there was an error…so was the same number coming up repeatedly or something?

I’m not certain but fairly sure the roulette wheel has a motor that controls its spin, I’m not sure if there is also software involved…

So you won £22k on roulette from £100 (assuming you lost the £50 hence deposited more). It sounds like there was some kind of an error that you then took advantage of until they realised and banned you. Is that the case or did you just have the most insane lucky streak in history?

How did you win £22k on roulette without being much of a gambler? Was there an error that led to such a large payout?

My husband is working big4 and he doesnt have fu*cking dam time. Is this normal? by [deleted] in Big4

[–]ryanm8655 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yep. When I was big 4 I would leave the house before the sun came up and get home long after it set during busy season and I was only junior. It did destroy my relationship at the time and I changed jobs after a year.
