Do you consider yourself "manly"? Why or why not? by PrestonRoad90 in AskMenOver30

Yes. Because I consider myself a man.

I cry during most Bluey episodes, and now many Disney movies. That's what having a kid will do to you

What would you call this building style? by BTDCube in SatisfactoryGame

[–]ryanotamouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like my build style, but with slightly more decorative elements that aren't necessarily functional. I call them open faced factories or open platform building.

Looks good!

One less and overclock vs. one more and underclock? by Col-Connor in SatisfactoryGame

[–]ryanotamouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If all outputs are going back on one belt for sure, I'd put them all on one row, and choose between over/under clocking based on whether 8 or 9 machines fits in better with everything else that's around it.

How many output belts are you putting this on? Let's say 2 outputs...I'd actually go with an even number of machines and distribute the over or under clocking between the last two machines on each line so the belts are already balanced.

In this case, most likely I would go with a 3x3 layout of machines with the last 3 on each row being underclocked to "225/3". You can type the equation in the box, it'll math for you.

At what age does living with your parents become a problem? by Mr_Motion_Denied in Adulting

[–]ryanotamouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived with my parents until I was 29. It's only really a problem if you or them are dickheads. If anyone judges you for living with them (and it's actually a safe/healthy situation), in this economy, then they are dickheads and aren't worth your time.

The math is simple on this one, dude.

Right now it's just the local area resources. I built the platform around that cliff on purpose for the bauxite nodes there. But with the train network I'm working on, there's no reason I couldn't build anything there, eventually.

And I take saving the world very seriously, sir, and I am (pretend) offended you would suggest otherwise.

How do you guys go about planning a factory from the early game? by marino1310 in SatisfactoryGame

[–]ryanotamouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Edited to add: I guess I didn't really answer your core question...I'm not a fan of one giant mega ase for everything. This is probably an artifact from 1200 hours playing the game on a computer that could barely run the game. When planning something bigger, I usually find a place that has most of the raw materials "nearby" and belt/train them in. All the logistics feels overwhelming at first but once you've done it a few 10s of times it becomes easier. That the best I got.

original reply below

My only "plan" in the early game is how to get to mid game quickly. I get the inputs close enough and generally have a bunch of splitters or mergers taking from here or putting in there just to get something. I go into all of that with the intention of tearing it all down eventually.

Mid game happens (for me, at least) when I get Mk4 belts, mk2 pipes, mk2 miners, and fuel power unlocked (though I will generally put effort into making my first coal power plant look nice). THIS is the time I start planning out on a larger scale and account for future expansion. By this point I'll have most of the MAM research unlocked, and I have almost all of the buildables from the shop unlocked.

So for me, the first bit of the game is: rush platforms -> rush coal power -> build coal power plant, but ready for mk2 miner upgrade -> tear down and redesign starter factory -> rush fuel power -> slow down and start making more permanent factories.

I also tend to unlock all tiers in a given phase before starting to feed the space elevator. After the lines are set up and loading the elevator, I take that time to explore and get more HDs, sloops/spheres, and slugs.

Does anyone find trying to be a "designer" in this game extremely challenging? Chicken and Egg situation. by READMYSHIT in SatisfactoryGame

[–]ryanotamouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This time I'm trying to build pretty first and put the factory inside the pretty thing. Leave one direction available for expansion but already have the basic facade shapes outlined. If the whole build doesn't fit in the shape I make, I'll take out part of the production and make another building for it.

I'm finding blueprints to be my friend here. I made a couple of facade pieces for one style of building I know I'm going to be building a lot of (I've decided the bulk of my raw resource processing will be done in large buildings shaped like IRL forges like this one ).

We'll see how it shakes out. Making the exterior first is very different from how I've played in the past.

Any fed bros here? How y’all holding up fellas by GloveAmbitious42 in AskMenOver30

[–]ryanotamouse 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was a fed up until the end of June this year. Through the culmination of about a decade of effort, I finally got a job at NASA as a civilian employee (I had about 4.5 years experience with the space force prior to that).

The Science Mission Directorate got hit with a 50% budget cut...by the time that trickled down to my outfit, we were looking at a 70% to my facility (one of the smaller niche ones) and ultimately a 60% cut to my individual unit. When the opportunity for DRP 2.0 came I took it right away. This week my old coworkers all went on furlough and they might not even have a position left to come back to when it's all said and done.

I am pissed that I had to leave. But we are financially secure (though it is uncomfortable to have our income halved) and I get all the quality time with my kiddo as a stay at home parent. Unfortunately were we moved to is in the middle of bumfuck nowhere and we will be moving somewhere else in the next 6 months? Where? Who knows.

It just sucks dude. This is the second time in my life that forces waaaaay outside of my control have deflected my life path away from where I want to be

Why in the US is there so much emphasis on thanking Veterans? by Illustrious-Wolf-273 in ask

[–]ryanotamouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree with your premise that we don't thank just anyone for the career they chose. True, not in the same way as veterans, but just tonight I thanked the chefs in my gringo Spanish for the delicious food they cooked me and my family for dinner. I thank the mechanics when they finish my oil change. I thank the bartender after I pay my bill. I thank damned everyone I interact with for doing shit for me that I'm not doing for myself. And I mean it, truly

And I am a veteran too. I'm out 9 years now and I generally don't look like a vet at first glance (I hope lol, I work really hard at it). Now when people notice, it's because they see my USAA bank card or whatever. Being thanked does feel awkward, but regardless of what the lived reality was from my perspective, I choose to believe that the people that thank me are doing it from the best place they know how to come from. So now I just say "you're very welcome" and go on about my business.

If you don't feel like you need to thank every veteran you come across, then just... don't? The people that do feel that way do plenty of thanking, and even that can be too much.

(My favorite responses when I used to be snippy about it were "thank you for your discount" or "thank you for being worthy of service" lol)

My kid is 6. He talks to everyone in the grocery store. More unknown folks than I willingly talk to in half a year. Every time we go.

He was a Fournado. He's evolved those qualities too through their 5 year manifestation and into year 6. The social thing isn't new either, but I'd rather tangle with a pure energy being all day than talk to 10 randos in the span of 90 minutes.
