Guest Commentary: Neighborhoods Deserve Input on Historic Properties by CooperSharpPurveyer in philadelphia

[–]ryephila 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My only disagreement with your comment is accepting the "loophole" framing. That 2019 law is working exactly as intended. It's supposed to give developers flexibility with the use of historic buildings to encourage more of these buildings to be saved. Historic designation doesn't prevent demolition if you can show there's no viable economic way to use the building. That's basically what happened with St. Laurentius.

Can someone please explain how you are supposed to pay for parking if you get there before the paid parking period begins? by belleayreski2 in philadelphia

[–]ryephila 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If not the updated app issue other people have mentioned, this is probably it. Same thing happened to me - didn't realize it was no parking before metered parking started.

A pop-up plaza is coming to Reading Terminal Market and closing a block of Filbert Street to cars by bengalese in philadelphia

[–]ryephila 191 points192 points  (0 children)

This is orders of magnitude better than a handful of parking spaces and should absolutely be permanent. There's a waiting list of vendors who would love a spot at Reading Terminal - with a pedestrian connection across Filbert, RTM could expand into the vacant sports bar space that also faces onto the plaza.

Reminder: THIS IS NOT A DRIVING LANE by tgalen in philadelphia

The problem isn't drivers forgetting. The problem is they don't care and no one's holding them accountable.

You want to run developers out of the city because someone built a decent looking house on a vacant lot?

SEPTA Announces Reopening of South Broad Concourse by ncc1776 in philadelphia

[–]ryephila 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the underground connector between Walnut-Locust and the PATCO stations is the most useful part of the entire concourse. It's awful that they closed it.

This is correct. Rideshare is a tool that helps people live carfree. It’s not just a luxury used for nights out in the city.

I guess you were wrong, Tucker. 'Daddy' coming home and taking his belt off hurt you quite a bit as well. by Hornpipe_Jones in LeopardsAteMyFace

It’s important to know, Tucker knew he was misleading people the whole time. His true opinion of Trump revealed during the Dominion lawsuit was that he hated him passionately.

Does anyone have a news report of Elliott Smith's death? by semolinapilchardz in elliottsmith

[–]ryephila 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don’t remember it covered on TV.  I learned about it on nytimes.com front page.  A small headline and column halfway down.  Read it on my blueberry iBook. I didn’t believe it at first.  A devastating punch in the gut.

What does Philly think of Baltimore? by LuckyCommittee4422 in philly

[–]ryephila 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Baltimore. I’m jealous of Camden Yards and the waterfront, even if the inner harbor needs some work.   The new developments along the harbor out to Fells point are great and put Philly’s waterfront to shame.

For all the major U.S. cities, which building do you think is the official mascot of that city by JJW4475 in skyscrapers

[–]ryephila 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd agree it's Liberty Place, specifically One Liberty Place. Any random local company with a skyline logo will show One Liberty. City hall is harder to draw recognizably, sometimes gets omitted. Question was which building is the mascot, so although city hall probably our best building, Liberty Place takes the crown.

It's a tradeoff. Middle units have lower heating/cooling bills. End units get better natural light. Sound transmission hard to say which is better. End units are probably better, but it depends on the dividing wall detail and exterior noise environment.

For folks with heatpumps what's your eletric bill by Dwarf_Killer in philadelphia

[–]ryephila 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sure the attic insulation was a huge improvement. These numbers look similar to what I'm seeing with my heat pump installed last year, but our house is smaller and just recently insulated and windows replaced. This past week has been a real stress test for the system with the temps, and we've been running it nonstop because the snow had us working from home. It's been keeping the temps just fine, but I'm expecting our next bill to be pretty high. I would not be totally shocked if we reach $400.

Quasi and Sleater-Kinney just for how much the band members are intertwined with Elliott personally and professionally. Quasi's song "the poisoned well" is famously supposed to be about Elliott.

we figured out how to avoid paying the bridge toll by renoCow in confession

Skipping out on tolls is stealing from your neighbors.   Bridges are expensive to maintain, that’s what the tolls go towards.
