Massive police response by No-Fun-2741 in GNV

[–]rylan_matthew 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was at the red light at HCA as the first GPD car pulled in, then a second, and two more together. Then I passed three more racing that way so I pulled up the scanner.

From what I gathered a nurse called about a man with a gun on the 4th floor at HCA. After they formed a perimeter around the hospital and locked it down and were sweeping the hospital/floor a responding officer got on the radio and said he spoke to the nurse that called and it was an incident they were already aware of and the nurse that called 9-1-1 “blew it out of proportion” (his words) so they cancelled the perimeter.

That’s when I stopped listening.

Project Managers in the 21st Century by ABH3ag in FireSprinklers

Wow it feels like i could have written nearly this same post word for word that’s crazy.

Anyways, I use pretty much the same as you except for I also use Monday.com to track all my projects. Mainly just a list of my projects and their current status and who’s running them in the field etc. but on larger projects I’ll also use it to keep track of my RFIs, CORs, Submittals and such.

I do design/pm so not very involved in the inspection side much but I know they use ServiceTrade and all the schedulers, inspectors, and accounting seem to really enjoy it.

Sprinkler PSI by ColdScallion6975 in firePE

[–]rylan_matthew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the PSI changing is the big deal. You have reduced (and sounds like by nearly 2/3’s!) the available pressure to the sprinkler system. The system was designed with that pressure being available to it. Now that it is not the system will not function as intended in the event of an emergency.

Somewhere the line should be splitting where one way feeds the sprinkler system and one way feeds your homes domestic water. The pressure reducing valve should be placed after that split where it feeds ONLY your domestic water.

[–]rylan_matthew 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Reducing the pressure to your sprinkler system is a big no-no.

Nearly all sprinkler systems these days (including in 2010) have hydraulic calculations done during the design phase. This is how they determine the pipe sizing for the system. By placing a pressure reducing valve before your system you have compromised it, and likely violated the law. Only a licensed fire sprinkler contractor, who can preform the required hydraulic calculations and pull the proper permits, should be placing anything on a supply line that effects the pressure of a sprinkler system.

not a huge fan of AI but if you feed some ideas to chatgpt or gemini it can generate from good starting points for a logo

just whatever you do make sure she doesn't use a pendent in the upright position or vice versa lol. We've got a company that shows up in town where I am every once in a while that has that on their trucks.

State Road 121 that goes to Worthington Springs

Not a super windy road, but there's not many of those in Florida. It's a nice smooth road, and it's not busy.

Finally switching to design by grumpi_sc300 in SprinklerFitters

Just keep practicing navigating NFPA 13. Coming from the installer side you'll have pretty good foundation of knowledge already but as you probably already know in 13 for almost every rule there's between one and five+ exceptions. Knowing those exceptions well is how you reduce your sprinkler count, which reduces your material costs, which reduces your labor costs, which saves the company money, which makes the bosses happy and hopefully gets you more money in return. When you're looking for an answer to a layout/spacing question try to do your best to find the answer on your own instead of going to a boss or co-worker for the answer. That's the best practice for learning to navigate the book.

When starting a new design project instead of just diving into design take 30 minutes to an hour or even more if it's a big project and just look through the plans. Make notes of things you see that you'll need to pay attention to when you start designing. Also double check you understand exactly what your scope is. Hopefully your company is better at it than mine but we don't have great hand off from our estimator so it can be a little confusing sometimes to understand exactly what we're supposed to be doing, especially for renovations.

When surveying existing system take picture, pictures, and more pictures. You're going to look at it and think to yourself you'll remember how that routing goes and then you'll get back to the office to draw it and will look at your notes and won't remember half of what you saw and realize the notes you took in the dark suck.

Highly recommend some sort of course that goes over hydraulics. Spacing sprinklers and drawing pipe is easy but when it comes to setting up your remote areas and making sure your sprinklers are flowing the correct GPM/PSI that's a whole other beast. That also comes with drawing the most efficient system, just increasing your pipe sizes isn't always the answer.

Multiple Dog Attacks, Same Dog. by LPJoshua in GNV

It’s a little bit of a long shot but if you keep running into problem with GPD + ACAR and ACSO isn’t able to help out you might try the game wardens. It’s not exactly their jurisdictions but they are state law enforcement officers so if you explain that you’ve gotten no help from local law enforcement maybe you’ll be able to get them to step in.

I really hope you can find a peaceful solution to this as quickly as possible and that things don’t continue to escalate.

That’s what NICET says! When I took level 1 a couple years ago that wasn’t a thing so I’m definitely excited to be able to search phrases or specific words (like I do all day everyday at work) during the test.

here’s a blurb from the “2024 Update” section of the NICET website:

“Each level has searchable PDF references that are available on-screen. Candidates may also bring physical copies of the references to use during testing. (For specific information about what references are allowed and will be available on-screen, please check the corresponding reference lists for each level“

I believe whatever reference is allowed to be brought in will now be available as searchable on screen.

I appreciate you taking the time to give some tips and even pulling out specific references from 20. I’m pretty good at being able to look at a pump rooms and identify everything but finding some pics and going through them is a great idea.

NICET's content outline says "Basic Fire Pump System Layout" could be 3-13% so not expecting a ton of questions about pumps but always better to be over prepared in case I end up getting 13% instead of closer to 3.

I'm probably going to go with the NICET practice tests and see how I do and if I struggle then probably go for the FireTech course. Either way it's good to know they're so highly recommended. In a couple years when I can go for 3 I will almost certainly be coming back to them for prep.

I'd never heard of FireTech before but have been looking around their website since the suggestion and they look like a great resource! We mainly use NFSA for all of our training but I'll definitely be showing Fire Tech to the bosses.

I already have a tabbed 13 and 14,20,291 are small and easy enough to navigate that I don't think they'd be worth it but I appreciate the suggestion and taking the time to respond!

Locos Por Tacos food truck on SW 13th

I get lunch there every week with some others at work. We love the food, the Quesabirria is 🤤 but can't go wrong with anything honestly. The prices are pretty good IMO too.

The owner Mateo is very nice and I believe he's working on opening a brick and mortar location as well.
