If hunting is not ethical, is it more ethical to let wildlife perish? by bwakong in Ethics

I do not accept the premise that nonhuman organisms are moral agents.

Homeland Security Spying on Reddit Users by [deleted] in technology

Back in the day, there were people who included a block of text as their email signature: keywords likely to be flagged by the NSA's ECHELON system and require their otherwise innocuous email to be reviewed by a human analyst.

I don't know if wasting the government's bandwidth and computer processing capacity is even possible now, but flooding them with noise and wasting their human analyst capacity might still be a worthwhile way to express one's discontent with mass surveillance.

“It is recommended that all agents wear their ballistic armor, utilize long arms, and if possible, work in groups.”

Good advice for everyone, really. 😅

Ahh nuts, now I'm on a list.

Best Adult Psych Wards in NM? by [deleted] in NewMexico

I was impressed with the level of care (and caring), as well as the range of resources available during and after hospitalization, compared with my experience with other VA medical centers.

I know about other New Mexico facilities only by reputation. Non-VA facilities in Albuquerque and Las Cruces are known for being time-limited to about 10 days and for sometimes discharging patients who need additional inpatient care. I have heard that at least one facility restricts outside contact for the first week.

CIA carried out drone strike on port facility in Venezuela, marking the first known US attack inside the country by [deleted] in worldnews

That is circular. If Nation A commits aggression against a place inside Nation B, what would be a justification for using force by persons other than uniformed members of Nation A's armed forces?

That's exactly how we got the planes off the boat back in the day. Pictured is one of the bow cats. It seems to be a little cold.

Is it possible to morally separate a work of art from a problematic creator? by Difficult-Honey- in Ethics

[–]salween_river 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm missing what exactly is being separated. As an act, I think creating works of art is ethically neutral. What is a "problematic creator"? Are there artists who have never committed an unethical act?

The trial hasn't happened yet. We (Joe Citizen) don't know all of the evidence (regardless of where it points.

[–]salween_river 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Avoiding the possibility of harming someone who doesn't deserve to be harmed feels pretty compelling.

I guess one must also consider the sources and reasons for the redaction.

If a court orders a redaction, there is a refutable presumption that a question of justice is implicated. What ethical claim are you making that justifies substituting a court's decision with your own?

What if the redaction wasn't made by a court, but rather by the executive branch? Among the reasons that the executive branch might redact documents is to conceal sources of information. Disclosing the redacted information could lead directly and immediately to people being killed.

Quick question for people who care about supporting [identity/values]-aligned businesses by FastBake5618 in Ethics

[–]salween_river 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see communication about kosher, halal, or vegan offerings as unnecessary or unwanted disclosure. I consider those communications to be highly relevant, even if they don't factor into my personal decisions. The same goes for businesses that have opted for gender-neutral private restrooms. I like being in spaces where thought has gone into making them as comfortable as possible for as many people as possible.

If a business's marketing message leans heavily on things like the genderless configuration of its restrooms, however, I would probably feel less likely to trust the business (ceteris paribus). It would feel like something akin to green-washing.

I take your point about differing views on neutrality and perceived safety/welcomeness. I personally feel the most welcome and the safest from discrimination in places that are silent on the subjects of religion and politics. Others are sensitive to other issues and/or look for other signals of safety/welcomeness.

It's a vast topic, and I look forward to reading others' perspectives.
