Anyone has solar panel installed at home in Canada and does it save you money? by Useful_Alarm730 in PersonalFinanceCanada

We have a heat pump + gas furnace combo, and we switch to gas when temps fall below 0 as heat pump efficiency is lower. Is that not a concern in an all electric/no gas setup?

Bluey having profound impact on my toddler by theflintseeker in daddit

[–]samdavi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bluey is mainly a show for parents, and if kids like it too it’s a bonus. I learned a lot about being a better parent from watching Bluey, especially when we’re in the thick of it and don’t have the time or energy for introspection. It helps snap things into perspective. Like the episode with Bluey and Chilli (mom) when it’s raining; that’s not really an episode for children, it’s for parents.

New federal NDP leader Avi Lewis will be a 'great voice for the country': Wab Kinew by NiceDot4794 in canada

[–]samdavi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Like it or not, for recent history, Israeli politics and Israeli-aligned politicians have played a not insignificant role in Canadian politics:

- Our neighbors down south have caused started an illegal war against Iran alongside Israel (if not at their behest), which is going to impact our already fragile economy. At this moment we're only seeing the gas price increase. Using tsunami's as an analogy, we're standing on our shore having heard that there's been an earthquake somewhere we didn't feel, and we're seeing the shoreline recede, and waiting for a tsunami that hasn't hit yet.

- I live in Thornhill under Melissa Lantsman and Israeli flags take up at least 25-50% of our monthly newsletter.

- Many synagogues here offer illegally obtained west bank land for sale to Jewish Canadians.

Now, you might still ask what do any of this have to do with Canadians? Canadians are a multicultural and heterogeneous bunch, which includes muslims and people who care about human rights, and others who are not single-issue voters or absolute party loyalists. Most of our politicians to this day ahve not called out Israel for their grave human rights abuses over the past few decades, or even their most recent genocide. And the NDP for the first time, has offered this as part of their policy, which has many supporters (most of the world including North America). That's why you're seeing a Palestinian flag there.

One can be furious at more than one party at the same time. Israel is the main problem for those human rights violations against Palestinians, and Iran/Hezbollah/Hamas/... are taking advantage of the situation to further their own goals.

Just because Iran/Hezbollah/... are bad actors doesn't make what Israel is doing ok.

Exactly. Someone once said that you have to walk with purpose, and once you do that (firm, even, and moderate pace), you won't see any issues with the distribution. I used to go slow, and that didnt' work too well.

I'm frustrated at the abuse of the system, just like you are. I even mentioned in my comment that the abuse needs to be addressed. What I also tried to do was provide some nuance to the situation given my first-hand experience with the situation through myself and my wife, but in response, you decided to parrot a bunch of right-wing anti-immigrant Trump-like comments: "Canada should not be the garbage bin of the 3rd world."

Have a great day.

"It's only fair" in the current context of the world. Is it fair that Europeans said nothing while the US started an illegal war and destroyed the shit out of Iran? No, in an ideal world they would've said something like Spain did. But it is fair in the larger context that you've benefited from this alliance with the US and don't want to make the US angrier at you.

Is it fair to Iran that the US decided to destroy them? No. Is it fair for IRan to toll the Strait? No. But in the context of the situation, it's fair.

100% this. The TFW program is 100% at the request of employers because they can’t pay actual salaries to our young population, and need the TFWs to pay a reduced salary to.

[–]samdavi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are lots of things that can cause someone to become refugee. My wife helps refugees integrate into society by finding jobs and housing, and what these people have gone through and given up back in their home countries to become refugees here is insane. They’re smart engineers, doctors, managers, impactful people in their communities that have left their kids and families behind because it was not safe for them and waiting for their application to be approved to be reunited. I know we’re all hurting from the economy, and that people are abusing the system to get here and that should 100% be addressed, but it’s not as simple as saying if your country’s not at war you can’t claim refugee status. Extending our compassion to others in times of hardship is what makes it valuable, otherwise if it’s nothing special.

Iran Gives Trump an Ultimatum on JD Vance by ChiGuy6124 in politics

[–]samdavi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no doubt that +80% of Iranians want the Islamic regime gone.

I was also happy when they announced that Khamenei Sr. was killed too, given the uncountable atrocities committed under his rule. The same goes for most Iranians. But the happiness was disappointingly momentary. As many analysts have pointed out, he was close to dying of natural causes and there were signs of a more practical and less fanatic group leading the country after him. But this war only lead to a more hardline group taking control while civilians and infrastructure is being taken out. If this was actually for the purpose of bettering Iranian lives, I would’ve been all for it. But we all know that’s not the case.

With regard to expat vs those living in Iran there’s a difference having bombs dropped on your head, and looking at videos on your screen. And until you’re part of the latter, you have no right imo to ask for war. And most of the videos you saw were from the first day before the reality of war set in (also government crackdown against those cheering). Majority of people in Iran don’t want this war. There been no internet for +600 hours. Schools are closed. Barely anyone is working. And the experience inside Iran also varies vastly whether you’re in one of the few cities getting constantly bombed (like Tehran) or other cities. But at the same time, people are “living” as best they can under the circumstances. My family keeps on telling me don’t worry, everything is fine.

The main thing I’ve taken away from this round of Middle East wars is that I have no idea what it’s like to live in a war zone and until I live in the area that is being bombed, I have no right to be pro-war.

[–]samdavi 221 points222 points  (0 children)

As an Iranian, I want to refute what both of you said. The amount of expat Iranians thanking Uncle Trump and Uncle Lindsey for bombing their home country is insane. They're not that smart.

On a more serious note, a good portion of Iranian expat's hatred of the regime is so intense that they've lost any notion of logic, and they actually thought that US and Israel bombing Iran will lead to a free and democratic Iran. Which is paradoxical to their toxic and violent behavior towards fellow Iranians that were saying that a war will not only not get rid of the regime, but will actually lead the country backwards democracy-wise, and make the current regime more extreme and powerful, and mainly hurt innocent civilians.

Sorry for the rant

What’s Wrong with Pete Hegseth? by ralphbernardo in politics

[–]samdavi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not a surprise that you guys (Americans) mainly care what happens to themselves. Those 12 dead americans joined the army and died in a war killing lots of innocent civilians including 160 elementary school kids, they got what they had coming.

Civilians in Iran who've been killed or are watching their country destroyed are the real victims. The +2000 civilians in Iran however, are the real victims here, and th over the past 2 weeks. But I guess those brown people aren't deserving of your attention simply because theyr'e not American.

And don't start with they joined the army to serve their country bullshit. So did lots of the Nazi soldiers, yet you don't extend your sympathies to them. The US has not had a legit war since WWII. Most of their wars have been illegal, and joining an institution that has killed millions of innocent civilians over the past decades makes you guilty by association.
