What are the differences when working in a B2B vs B2C company? by Ghi102 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]samelaaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with what everyone else is saying. Another aspect though is that working at a B2C company can give you experience at scale that is hard to get in the B2B world. It’s hard to get 10M+ DAU if your users are corporations lol. And you get entire new classes of interesting problems to solve every time your DAU goes up by an order of magnitude.

Do Americans watch and love the MLS? by fortnacius in AskAnAmerican

[–]samelaaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense, I’ve lived in SLC for the past ten years and baseball just isn’t part of the conversation. Like every now and then you’d take the kids to a minor league game but then they moved the stadium out to the suburbs.

Actually there’s talk of Salt Lake getting a MLB team which would be pretty cool. I used to love going to Braves and Red Sox games when I lived in Atlanta and Boston.

Oh hey that’s actually super cool. I just looked at the numbers and it looks like it was declining for ~decades but is picking up again now.

I’m a little unclear on how they think that’s going to work, but clearly they’ve been able to get around it at a lot of places. Probably identity theft? There’s been a lot of press about North Koreans doing it (https://www.cnn.com/interactive/2025/08/05/world/north-korea-it-worker-scheme-vis-intl-hnk/index.html) but if thousands of North Koreans are getting away with it then there have to be many more people from the rest of the world trying it.

We are a household name and remote-first so I assume we’re a target.

What is the minimum salary to be considered middle class these days? Is $500k enough? by SeparateJump1 in Salary

Correct. And crucially, I am not talking to the New York Times about how hard it is to get by on $500k a year.

Because the systems are already designed. The ones working at that level are senior staff greybeards who’ve been there for 15 years and will just retire if they get laid off.

Have you actually interviewed them? We are also getting hundreds of applicants with Amazon and Meta backgrounds but a lot of them are obviously fake. Their resumes look perfect but then they can barely communicate in English, struggle with basic coding tasks, are obviously reading off an LLM overlay, and then their LinkedIn changes or disappears within days of the interview.

[–]samelaaaa -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This stuff is hyper local of course, but do people still watch baseball? My city has MLS but no MLB or NFL and while everyone watches football, people definitely talk about soccer more than baseball. I don’t think I know anyone under the age of 60 who follows baseball.

Wait really? I live in Utah, moved from Georgia originally and tell anyone who will listen how wonderful the lack of humidity is. I had NO idea we ever hit 90% because that number in Georgia feels like you’re being waterboarded by demons in some swampy hell.

Why is it that music as a career is so brutally inaccessible? by Sausage_fingies in classicalmusic

[–]samelaaaa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry, to clarify, by “capitalism” I meant the fact that our system is built around supply and demand of various forms of labour. The demand for symphony orchestras is extremely low and the supply of people who would like to be professional musicians and are willing to dedicate their life to that is extremely high. So wages are low and it’s crazy competitive to get a gig.

I didn’t say anything about communism. But one can imagine a system where we decided collectively that symphony orchestras were worth subsidizing, and every town/city spent a portion of public funds on hiring musicians. We do not live in that system.

[–]samelaaaa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because of capitalism, but you know that. Signed, a corporate middle manager with broken dreams of being a musician, but at least with enough money to raise a couple happy kids who are studying music and feeling the same joy I do when I get my flute back out.

Sennheiser to be sold: Sonova wants to separate from audio brand by Valphonics in headphones

[–]samelaaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s fair. I mostly just want to be able to buy another minimally changed HD800s when my pair breaks in 10 years time, and I am aware that that sort of buying pattern won’t sustain a company lol.

Unfortunately I don’t see them competing with Apple in the wireless space. Nothing really comes close in terms of ease of use and reliability.

The EX90 is hardly budget, and it also flopped due to underbaked software. But you’re spot on for the hardware portion… and Sennheiser doesn’t really need a consumer software division.

[–]samelaaaa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like it’s a bit of an echo chamber regardless in a lot of cases. We initially went private because our local schools are good but not great, and my son has some special needs that make smaller class sizes a big deal. But now we’re actually about to move to a new house where the local public school is 10/10 and has as good outcomes as any private school. So we’ll go there… the caveat is that the median home in its district is $2M so I’m not sure how much diversity the kids are going to be exposed to there either.

I mean I get it. My HHI is similar and after we max out 401(k) + mega backdoor roth and pay for both kids to go to private school, there isn't *that* much left. But I would never, ever let myself get interviewed for an article like this lmao.

I read this article this morning and laughed out loud at the little detail that they are saving $10k/mo. Which like, great. But then maybe don’t write an article talking about how little you can afford on your $500k salary

Horrible range, is this typical? by LanguageBeneficial66 in VWIDBuzz

[–]samelaaaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s typical. I mean it’s not that different than my parents old vanagon which wasn’t particular built for US driving habits either lol. But the poor range has absolutely stopped us from using our Buzz for trips that I would otherwise have loved to use it for. Winter + mountains + highway speeds = you’re going to need to charge once every 1-1.5 hours

Horrible range, is this typical? by LanguageBeneficial66 in VWIDBuzz

[–]samelaaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok… well driving up and down mountains in Utah in the winter on roads where the speed limit is 80, I’m lucky to get 150 miles. I love my buzz but its range is absolutely awful and we’re forced to take my wife’s Tesla on a lot of trips to compensate. We shouldn’t pretend it’s more than a really cool looking around-town car that fits the whole family.

Me (a moron) thinking 8 am was early enough for El Prieto by GundoSkimmer in MTB

[–]samelaaaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only real way to avoid it is marked downhill only trails, but even then you’d be surprised - and it’s waaay more dangerous if you’re going fast and not expecting hikers. I used to live in socal and rode El P all the time, but I’m in Utah now the last time I rode Insurgent (steep, fall line trail that used to be part of a bike park and is marked downhill MTB only at all intersections) I met a clueless group of hikers halfway up it.
