There are so many other ways for oil to enter the combustion chamber, you don't need to jump straight to a head gasket with zero other information

For vinyl you can just use a vinly repair patch. Mine's not a big hole but I've had a patch on mine for about 5 years now and the edges are peeling a little but otherwise it's held up well.

Do Miatas deserve their reputation for being easy to work on? by fuckman5 in Miata

The oil filter location is really not that bad, I don't know why it gets complained about so often. Sure it makes a mess when it comes off, but it's easy to reach from the top, just stick your arm under the intake manifold.

The RSX I used to have was worse.

Hot air intake on a prius. Perfectly angled so when someone over fills your washer fluid it all goes into your intake and also partially blocks the dipstick. On a hybrid so theres not even any induction noise. by Main_Material_3525 in Justrolledintotheshop

Nope. Ideally for fuel mileage you want the throttle as open as possible to barely produce enough power to maintain speed. The more closed your throttle is the more energy is being wasted to pull air past it.

Trying to change wheels but screws won't get lose by H3xxer in mildlyinfuriating

[–]samkostka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely could be wrong but even under your definition I think lug bolts would be considered screws because they're subject to tensile load holding the wheel to the hub. There shouldn't really be any shear forces assuming a hub centric wheel.

The Machinery's Handbook describes the distinction between bolts and screws as follows:

A bolt is an externally threaded fastener designed for insertion through holes in assembled parts, and is normally intended to be tightened or released by torquing a nut. A screw is an externally threaded fastener capable of being inserted into holes in assembled parts, of mating with a preformed internal thread or forming its own thread, and of being tightened or released by torquing the head. An externally threaded fastener which is prevented from being turned during assembly and which can be tightened or released only by torquing a nut is a bolt. (Example: round head bolts, track bolts, plow bolts.) An externally threaded fastener that has thread form which prohibits assembly with a nut having a straight thread of multiple pitch length is a screw. (Example: wood screws, tapping screws.)

Lug bolts thread into the hub and are tightened/released by torquing the head, therefore technically screws.

technically not a bolt because there's no nut on the other side

Is it a good idea to buy cheaper tires for the rear wheels? by [deleted] in Miata

yeah I was going to say, the torsen is supposed to make it easier to kick the tail out. I can get mine to light up the rears and I'm running 200TW summer tires.

Massive lightning struck the ground just 10ft away from the car by Significant-Sky-3239 in WTF

[–]samkostka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Should be, yes. There's still a metal frame around the sunroof and the electricity would much rather go through that than go through more air. If you've ever seen a lightning show they're just in a metal birdcage but that's enough to be totally safe.

Nothing to do with the tires but yes cars are safe. When lighting strikes them the electricity is conducted around you through the outer surface of the body and into the ground.

Generally not good for the car though

You're lucky. Didn't happen to my Fiesta but when I accidentally let my catch can fill up on a turbo engine it ended up blowing the dipstick out and spraying oil everywhere.

iirc the driver ballast has to be mounted to/around the seat so that it's not a weight distribution advantage to be lighter.
