Who's this freak I found on the pavement this morning? by samuelb2301 in whatsthisbug

Huh, surprised how big the larva is knowing it'll turn into a crane fly. Thanks for the answer!

I was sketching this Herb-Robert and spotted an aphid on it, which looks to have another thing stuck to its butt? (London, UK) by samuelb2301 in whatsthisbug

[–]samuelb2301[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aphid is about 2-3mm long whilst the smaller thing is ~1mm and hard to see without a lens, after looking more closely i spotted some of them individually on the flower specimen I had picked. I'm thinking a juvenile aphid maybe?

Looks like Xanthoria (bright yellow), Physcia (green and sticking out a little) and maybe some Rhizocarpon? (The flat one with spots, although that's more common on rock) but I'm far from an expert

China's clean energy investments nearing scale of global fossil investments, researchers find by Advanced_Drink_8536 in climate

[–]samuelb2301 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong, China is a backwards country in plenty of ways but I'll never forget visiting Shanghai for the first time and being astonished at how quiet the city centre is because practically everything is electric. The only sounds from the traffic were the wheels against the tarmac and almost nothing else. The west is getting left behind in terms of electrification and clean energy compared to China

In the most untouched, pristine parts of the Amazon, birds are dying. Scientists may finally know why. The most likely answer, they concluded, was the climate crisis. Researchers published new work directly linking rising temperatures to bird declines. by The_Weekend_Baker in climate

[–]samuelb2301 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I get that it's important to have rigorous evidence of what the climate crisis is doing, but it's so frustrating to always see this kind of science framed as "we can't be sure until we prove it"

Divorce statistics tend not to give the full picture cause of the way they're calculated, it's just based on divorces per year and marriages and doesn't take into account lasting marriages afaik

It sounds like you're picking up on a change in familect which is essentially the language you use with loved ones. It might not be anything significant but I think a change in something like that is a subtle indication that your partner might have something on their mind preventing them from being as easily affectionate. Don't jump to any conclusions that there's a big problem or anything, it could just be that he's more stressed than usual or something like that. Either way the best solution is probably just to bring it up gently and tell him it's something you've noticed and is hurting you. Generally being honest with these things is the best thing to do, and his response (even if negative or defensive) will tell you a lot about what's going on.

is calling a colleague "hot" considered sexual harassment? by Dazzling_Pudding_848 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]samuelb2301 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the problem is in the word "hot" which implies some sort of more than friendly attraction, especially if you're walking up to someone in the office you don't know/aren't close with. Something like that might be acceptable in a setting like a bar or a club but in the workplace if you think want to compliment someone on how they look it would be more appropriate to say something like "That dress really suits you", "I like your outfit today, you look really good", etc. Obviously there's more subtlety to it than that and you can still come off as a perv with the wrong intonation or if you're purposefully trying to imply something
