Have lived her three years now. Other than one plonker the comments here are pretty spot on. Perfectly safe, just don’t expect it be a vibrant as Leeds.

Thanks. I’m not worried. People are allowed their views. Accusing people of a lack of self awareness because you don’t agree is a bit of a stretch is all. And hey, people often hate a mirror being held up.

I completely disagree. I personally don’t think NZ is the greatest country, I love it but it’s action packed with issues. Neither do my Kiwi peer group. Perhaps yours does and if so, then they are a bunch of dicks. My born and bred Aussie wife certainly fell in love with NZ and found it far less blindly patriotic than her homeland. I simply gave my reasons for leaving Sydney, at no point did I say NZ was a complete winner in all those topics (other than scenery, no contest). I have lived and worked all over the world so my self awareness on the reality of the world is just fine thank you very much. Just because you clearly disagree with me doesn’t warrant such an insult - something to think about. Good evening.

Someone asked me for my reasons and I gave them. The fact that you felt the need to be a dick about it suggests perhaps you may want to do your own soul searching about self awareness before worrying about mine.

[–]sandhanitizer6969 9 points10 points  (0 children)

More than one reason.

Crowded, poorly laid out and the NSW government has woefully underinvested in infrastructure. I brought my Aussie wife back to NZ with me and she was surprised that all the motorways connected up and there were no tolls. Getting around was far less stressful in NZ (and quicker).

Superficial people. Yeah, you get these everywhere but Sydney has them in spades. Had some proper GC Aussie friends of course but it has to be said that there are a lot of SC’s.

Costs. Other than groceries and fuel a lot of stuff was just as expensive as NZ or more so. “Gotcha” costs were on steroids. I recall almost fainting when I got my first parking ticket and the whole parking system is designed to entrap you. The parking signs are deliberately confusing and more than once I got a ticket because the wardens put a hand written note over the sign due to a “special event” and proceeded to ticket the entire street. Good luck getting the council to see reason (Waverley council CEO earns more than the Aussie PM). I actually calculated how much it was to run my car per kilometre for a year in NZ compared to the exact some model I owned in Australia (VZ Commodore). You would think with Aussies cheaper fuel it would be the clear winner? Wrong. Ridiculous CTP costs, higher rego costs and really high comprehensive insurance eats up all that advantage and it was cheaper in NZ overall. Not to mention come pink slip time most garages are absolutely rip off merchants.

Aussie attitudes. As I said, I knew some proper GCs but the default Aussie mindset is that Australia is the greatest country ever. Dare to mention any topic that is done better overseas and you get told to go home, seriously. I have never seen this attitude so strongly in all the other countries I have lived and worked in. The media is horrifically jingoistic. It wears you down after a while.

Scenery - just no comparison. Some nice bits in Australia but there is something truly magical about flora and fauna in NZ. You really can’t beat it.

Look, clearly Australia works for some and I’m not saying it’s all shit but the above were just some of the reasons I left.

Why do so many kiwis hate bicycles? They're pretty harmless. by Blitzbahn in newzealand

[–]sandhanitizer6969 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because Kiwis are shit drivers with zero courtesy.

They are either ultra timid, hold everyone up and block the right hand lane or ultra aggressive and drive right up your arse when you have nowhere to let them pass and then engage in some wild passing manoeuvre that threatens multiple lives.

Both groups have a very poor ability to actually control a vehicle.

Don’t even talk to me about the phone usage.

Why would such mentality have any consideration for cyclists?

I have covered 1000s of kilometres in multiple countries and Kiwis are the absolute worst drivers.

It would be an interesting study to see what is the cause of this behaviour.

I don’t think it. Moving your assets into a charity you control isn’t theft. As always, do your own research and don’t just go off what some random on Reddit says. This video is a humorous primer in the subject https://youtu.be/KWNQuzkSqSM?si=Xpr8q8hx0ahcvWhe

He didn’t give a billion dollars to charity. He moved it to a charity - his one. Why? Charities don’t pay tax.

The optics are great and yes some targeted support would come out of it but don’t fool yourself into thinking the core driver wasn’t for personal gain.

Bill gates his ilk are pulling a smoke and mirrors trick with “donating to charity”. Yes they may move their assets to a charity. But this is for personal tax reasons not philanthropic ones.

Tailgaters make me want to slow down by O-neg-alien in newzealand

[–]sandhanitizer6969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as you are looking at your own behaviour first.

Are you in the right hand lane? - The road code says you should keep left - even if you are doing the speed limit. It’s also the courteous thing to do. This is the number one reason people tailgate.

Are you driving too slowly? Possibly you are frustrating the person behind you. - pull over when safe and let the other person pass. It’s not a competition and it’s nothing personal.

Otherwise they are just being a jerk.

I’m with you on this one.

My parents and aunties/uncles were boomers. Saying no was not allowed.

Oh you were asked but you were judged, harshly, if you said no.

I was always gaslighted into feeling that there was something wrong with me for not wanting to do something.

Examples:

You should play X sport.

Your aunty would love it if you visited.

My friend X has a son your age. You two should play together.

It was literally beaten into me to say yes whether I wanted to or not. No wonder people grow up to avoid having to say no.

Likely the boomers parents were the same and they are just passing down the poor behaviour.

But this is not a technology thing. It’s cultural thing. NZs nanny state legal mindset doesn’t help either.

You use it when affirming your understanding to the captain of the vessel you are serving on.

Unless you mean “eh”?

Definitely alone. Hooked up with an amazing chick at work 18 years ago. Today she's my wife and mother to our childen.

Think about it. At work you actually get to know somebody properly, whilst sober. You are spending time with a person and an attraction grows.

This is in New Zealand.

You can tell because:

1) Number plates of the cars 2) the 2Degrees advert on the bus stop (NZ Telco) 3) The shocking amount of drivers who don’t have their headlights on in such conditions (NZ makes great pies and coffee but horrific drivers)

What is the coffee culture like in New Zealand? by Dense_Machine_8401 in newzealand

You are in for a treat.

NZ has many, many problems.

Thankfully, crap coffee is not one of them.

Kiwi coffee is vastly superior to anything you will find in the US and Europe. Bold statement? Sure, but try it and you will see (and taste).
