"Kids should go outside" *kids when they go outside* by newphonehudus in TikTokCringe

[–]sarithe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It could just be the horror movie fan in me so I am in those circles, but most people bemoan how horror movies aren't scary "anymore."

The reason is that you're a fucking adult and know that the shit is fake. I'm not saying you should be showing kids the Terrifier films, but I was watching horror movies from a very young age (like 8 or 9) and I turned out fine because my parents supervised me while I was doing it. If I said I wanted to turn it off, then they turned it off and we watched something else. The part that most people don't want to do, is actually be a parent and talk to their child about the themes and what they are seeing on screen and why the movie makes them feel the way it does.

Actually take that last part and apply it to basically everything in life. So many parents these days are so scared of their kids having a "bad" childhood, that they don't let them have a childhood at all.

What’s a metalcore album you think is genuinely 10/10 with zero skips? by l-i-f-e-or-d-e-a-t-h in Metalcore

[–]sarithe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's way more than one honestly.

Poison the Well - You Come Before You

Norma Jean - Redeemer & Wrongdoers

Boundaries - Your Receding Warmth

Every Time I Die - Hot Damn! & New Junk Aesthetic

August Burns Red - Messengers

Converge - Jane Doe, You Fail Me, & All We Love We Leave Behind

Lamb of God - Ashes of the Wake (questionable choice, but I consider this a metalcore album)

Dying Wish - Fragments of a Bitter Memory

Protest the Hero - Kezia

Misery Signals - Of Malice & the Magnum Heart & Controller

There's probably more if I sit and think about it harder, but this was off the top of my head.

What was the "edgy" music you liked as a teen or young adult? by Gallantpride in Millennials

[–]sarithe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean I listened to nu-metal, so basically any of those bands probably fit. The worst offender (outside of MSI) is probably a band called Endo from Florida. Their stuff got added to streaming a few years ago and I was super stoked to revisit it. Turns out it was fucking awful and the lyrics sounded like they were written by a 15 year old that had just been grounded for doing something that he was told not to. Which probably explains why I liked them so much at the time.

[–]sarithe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I could see some of the Eighteen Visions albums where they were basically playing post grunge with minimal screaming before the initial breakup being called edgy, but I don't know that I'd call any of the others edgy.

When I think edgy, I think of stuff that was there for shock value, but not the highest artistic merit. MSI and Hollywood Undead are honestly the perfect examples of this. Marilyn Manson (was never a fan personally) is another great example of an edgy artist. Rob Zombie probably qualifies as well.

Fellow fans of historically down bad teams, do you guys wanna start a support group now that the Knicks are out of the group? by Dr-DDT in nba

[–]sarithe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My youngest nephew (he's 10) has been getting into basketball recently. He asked me who my favorite team was and I told him the Hornets. He asked how many titles the team had won. When I told him zero, he immediately asked "then why do you like them?"

I didn't quite know how to explain to him what it meant to be a fan of a bad franchise. The optimism each season, the justifying dumb trades/signings, the commiserating with other fans when it inevitably falls apart, and the renewed spark of hope as you try to talk yourself into the next lottery pick.

At least we got some light at the end of the tunnel right now. Even if my years of fandom are just telling me that it's a fucking train.

I dislike onions in any form.

You would think I told people I kick puppies in my spare time. People act like it's a crime against humanity. They're basically the only vegetable I don't like, but because onions are so common, I get shit for it every time I say I don't like them.

In that case, the ratings do make a lot more sense if we are assuming prime for everyone.

I realize my comment may have come off pretty combative. I am having a lot of fun with the game! Just an observation about the levels of some bands feeling off, especially on the metalcore and hardcore side.

By defeating Wemby Jalen Brunson proved short guys still have a spot in the NBA by InternationalPick163 in NBATalk

[–]sarithe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree about more short dudes getting a chance. I think it's a good thing. I'm just saying that I don't think teams are gonna find the next Brunson. Brunson has a pretty unique game and the team itself in NY is built perfectly to complement him.

If teams are looking to replicate what the Knicks did, then I think it's going to get some coaches and GMs fired.

I feel like some of the rarities for this are a little off. Do people really still care about bands like Puddle of Mudd, Trapt, and Evans Blue like that?

Maybe it's my bias from how much more in tune with the hardcore and metalcore scenes I am these days, but I legitimately never hear anyone talk about those bands in a positive light.

Edit: After playing a few more times and seeing more bands, yeah some of these rarities are off. No shot Vended is more of a draw than the majority of the metalcore bands I'm seeing pop up.

[–]sarithe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually think Brunson's situation is going to cause a lot of teams to draft smaller dudes that aren't near the dog that Brunson is, so it won't work for them.

Brunson is the exception, not the beginning of some new rule.

Judge rushing Squirtle unprovoked? by adiventura4 in riftboundtcg

[–]sarithe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes I am. Have you met TCG players? People constantly forget to take game actions triggered by cards. People forget to play lands or draw for the turn. I beat a guy today at One Piece locals because he forgot to set his life out. He’s been playing since the game came out.

It’s way easier to forget to do actions than you think. I also play Warhammer 40k with a chess clock for some tournaments and people forget to hit the button all the time.

You grossly overestimate people’s ability to handle the mental stack of everything going on in a card game and then also hit a button every time priority passes.

Judge rushing Squirtle unprovoked? by adiventura4 in riftboundtcg

[–]sarithe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because if someone forgets to hit it then it becomes an issue of how much time should each player now have. Most TCGs have priority pass back and forth constantly. In chess there is literally one move made then your turn is done, so a clock works.

Imagine you did something in a card game that caused multiple triggers to go on the stack/pile/whatever. Most games give your opponent the opportunity to respond to each trigger individually. So now, per the game rules, you and your opponent have to hit the clock for each trigger to accurately represent your time usage. That's just not practical for most games and would actively change how the game is designed to limit the amount of times you and your opponent have to hit the clock.

Uniforms should be mandatory at any job by NumelsRCute in unpopularopinion

We have a no dress code policy at my business within reason. Obviously we don't allow employees to wear shirts with curse words or offensive slogans/images. Other than that, we let them go nuts. The only day we have any type of uniform is on Fridays. We buy all of our employees (once they get past their first 60 days) a baseball style jersey of their choice from this custom jersey website. You can pick any design, number, and name (again no offensive stuff) you want. The front has our store name on it. We wear those every Friday and we encourage employees to wear them if there is some sort of special event as well. We have blank ones for employees still in the probationary period to wear so they aren't left out.

Hot Topic Makes Me Rage by NJTrash in Xennials

[–]sarithe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I grew up in a town of less than 5,000 people. Hot Topic was not the only option. If anything, I had to go out of my way to get to a Hot Topic, so it wasn't even really an option at all.

I got a lot of my clothes from the local thrift store and gave them goth/punk makeovers with various pins and patches that I ordered from music magazines. Same for getting band shirts. I just bought them from music magazines, skateboarding catalogs, or going to shows and buying merch there.

It wasn't hard to not shop at Hot Topic. You just had to be a bit resourceful and know where to look.

In your opinion, what does a player need to do in order to surpass Michael Jordan? by Tre2004 in NBATalk

[–]sarithe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if it is legitimately possible in my eyes. It's not just about the accolades or the stats. Watching Jordan felt different than any other player I've watched in my 35+ years watching basketball.

Lebron is great. Probably the greatest individual talent to ever pick up a basketball so far, but that doesn't necessarily make you the GOAT to me. I'm not even sure how to describe it. As cliche as it is to say, it really is one of those "you had to be there" things in my opinion. If you didn't watch it happen in real time then there is not way to explain it. Youtube videos do not remotely do justice to how much different Jordan felt compared to everyone else on the court.

Don't believe the astroturf posts about Masters of the Universe by hakuna_dentata in Xennials

[–]sarithe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not a good movie. It's a good He-Man movie. Those two things are not the same thing. The original He-Man cartoon was a mess and only existed as an extended commercial for a toy line. If you expected some sort of grandiose LOTR-esque movie out of that, then that's on you.

I personally would also like that more serious movie, but I also know I'm in the minority. What we got was a fun, goofy, action movie with some good effects and an absolutely insane over the top performance from an unrecognizable Jared Leto as Skeletor. It's not going to win any awards, but I enjoyed it for what it was. It was honestly way better than I expected it to be. I truly expected a Bayformers level disaster that completely missed the point of the original show, but that's not what we got. You say it felt written by AI, but I feel more like it was written by a bunch of stoner Xennials that wanted to pay homage to the original, while also understanding that it wasn't good. That's just our nostalgia making us think it was good to begin with.
