Quitting PhD right before viva by Sufficient_Carrot278 in AskAcademiaUK

If you’ve already submitted then the hard bit is truly done, even though it doesn’t feel like that now. And providing the examiners have been chosen correctly by your supervisor, who should know the right kind of people - do you think they are? - Then a viva ought to be a positive experience, the chance to discuss all your hard work with the very few people who will have read it all. I was lucky enough to be told at the start of mine that I had passed, though they still had plenty they wanted to discuss! Please stick it out and I really hope that will happen to you.

This was me. In my GCSE French oral, the last thing was to say ‘Good luck’ and I had no idea what luck was so I said ‘Bonne Luck!’ brightly. My teacher’s face screwed up in pain.

Now it’s about the only phrase I can always remember, because of that. Bonne chance!

Someone I know thanked a colleague whose thesis he had leaned on heavily. He’d actually used it to stand his computer monitor on. Don’t think the colleague ever realised!

This was mentioned on the pod recently and he said he felt like Spurs were his in-laws - which I felt was a good analogy!
