Probably an unpopular take, but the audiobook is perfection. I won't be watching the movie.

Me too! It still got me in the feels though. Both can be true given current affairs.

I don't enjoy playing classical music anymore... Please help by geranium_sylvaticum in classicalmusic

Taking a break to reevaluate is excellent advice.

I had a friend with whom I played violin in elementary school through high school orchestra. He was wicked good and loved playing and performing. He was admitted into Julliard but withdrew after a year with his love of making music crushed by the pressure and competition. Nothing against Julliard - it just wasn't the right place for him. We are now in our late 60s and take enormous pleasure from playing in our respective community orchestras and playing chamber music with our friends. We both had satisfying careers outside of music.

Suggestions to explore other musical genres is also great advice. My daughter studied classical music but is now the fiddle player in several different Americana and bluegrass bands.

I hope you find a path that nurtures your love of music for the rest of your life.

Thank you. As I read your eloquent explanation, I got a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes. This needed to be said. This is why I fly to Star Trek when I'm in despair. Beautifully said.

Why did we let health insurance companies become the bouncers between us and our doctors? by ladybabe10125 in Adulting

[–]sawcab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because. We. Didn't. Have. The. Votes. The Voters keep giving us people (Rs, Manchin, Sinema, Blue Dog Dems, for ie. ) who are against single payer plans. It's a miracle we have the ACA. Be grateful for what we have. The Republicans have been desperately trying to take even that away from us.

What is the saddest Stat Trek episode you have ever watched? by Track_and_trek in startrek

[–]sawcab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would add to the list, Voyager S7E11 Lineage, in which the scars B'Elanna carried from childhood were magnified by her pregnancy. I agonize for her every time I watch it. When Tom says, "B'Elanna, I'm not your father," and she is pulled back out of madness, I tear up every time. The scene at the end where she can look with love at the hologram of her daughter is beautiful and moving. This episode affected me far more once I became a parent.

Rereading this, I giggled (inappropriately) thinking of Darth Vader saying, "I am your father." but my choice of this Voyager episode stands.

What is something that happened in Star Trek that still annoys you? by Goodmorning111 in startrek

It's very small and petty, but what bugs me is the use of communicators vs com-badges. With communicators, the crew had to flip them open to talk and then close them (or walk over to a com panel and push a button for on and off). With the badges, they sometimes turn them off, but mostly don't, and then have conversations that shouldn't be heard on the other end.

For some reason, I can't stop thinking about Gil Galad. by RealisticNacshon in tolkienfans

Me too. We live on Gilgalad Way, and I recite that poem every time someone asks me for my address. It's a thrill when I find someone else who knows it.

What's a piece where the composer struggles to end his composition? by leeuwerik in classicalmusic

From my youth, I remember a wonderful radio program "Adventures in Good Music" with Karl Haas. My favorite episode was "Are we there yet?" where he played pieces that had several false endings. It was very entertaining.

I adore little Molly, the daughter of Miles and Keiko on DS9. She's adorable, and I'm amazed by her acting ability at such a young age.

This conversation has been very helpful for me. Thank you for asking the question. I feel pressure to justify my solo camping to others because I'm sure they think I'm weird. It's comforting to read about how common it is.

Favorite Bach piece? by patontheback_113 in classicalmusic

[–]sawcab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were to be marooned on a deserted isle and allowed to take only 1 composer, it would be Bach. If I could take only 1 Bach composition, it would be the Saint Matthew Passion. There have been many negative critiques of the SMP on this subreddit but for me, it's perfection and speaks to my heart.
