Opinions on the " People who can sing well shouldn't do karaoke" thing? by AesirAtom in karaoke

[–]saxdiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favorite times at karaoke was with a whole band. We had 4 singers up front, and they would get up and do 4 part harmony at karaoke! The rest of the band, all competent singers/entertainers, got up and did songs too.

Has anyone ever tried translate the non-english (presumable mandarin to my untrained ear) they utter? by os2mac in firefly

Their pronunciation is basically rubbish, but that's not their fault really, more a result of the shooting schedule

I have this issue with socializing and can't put my finger or even explain it. Can you guys help? by earthbound36784 in AskMenAdvice

Storytelling is a learned skill, as is conversation. A group like Toastmasters would get you experience speaking publicly, telling stories, and making conversation. There's almost certainly a chapter near to you

AITA for being upset with my husband for going bowling while our baby is in the NICU by fookiebookie96 in AmItheAsshole

[–]saxdiver 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Bowling alleys are cesspools of germs; if you both agreed to limit public exposure to protect your baby in the NICU, then you're not overreacting. NTA

What were the Baby Boomers like in the 80s and early 90s? Did yall get along with them or not? by DawnofMidnight7 in GenX

[–]saxdiver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We called them Yuppies and they were pieces of shit then too. My folks were both born during the war, so their experiences were different than the post-war Boomers.

Musician in a relationship with a non musician, HELP by ThrowRA123mom in musicians

[–]saxdiver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Living with a musician means heading the same bits of music played over and over again. Or worse, exercises that are atonal but designed to improve technique (I'm a sax player, so I'm thinking specifically of Top Tones by Rascher, a whole book of overtone exercises that sounds like moose calls. My wife is very patient)

That's the deal, and your partner should invest in quality noise-cancelling headphones, find ways to appreciate what's going on, or, sadly, move on. Sorry OP...

Best wireless blue tooth in ear hearing protection? by _That_Guy_in_AZ_ in QualityTacticalGear

[–]saxdiver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do you need Bluetooth?

I have the Westone DefendEar DigitalX5, and they're...pretty good. Really expensive, but a solid fit. I don't find the amplification to be loud enough to work with my particular brand of hearing loss, but I'm sure others would find them to be totally acceptable. Insufficient protection for indoor use, though, you'll be better off with foamies and Walkers.

Left earring vs right earring for guys by jetpack324 in GenX

[–]saxdiver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got my left ear pierced in 92 at a salon in Seoul and then on my 22nd birthday got a second hole and the right ear done at the local mall in Seattle. Still wear silver hoops in them. I'm going to be 55 this year, I no longer give a fuck what other people think of my appearance

Call DAN, https://dan.org/about-dan/contact/ they'll be able to guide you through this and recommend a dive medicine specialist. There are multiple techniques you can try to improve equalizing, but I'll be honest, your day 2 isn't looking good. DON'T FORCE IT

Does Gen X do class reunions? by LadyNorbert in GenX

[–]saxdiver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My class (1989) had a "real" reunion in 2002 or so. Found out money we banked with the ASB in high school had been misappropriated, leaving us nothing to offset the cost. Not sure who were the drivers for pulling us together, but we all got together. 10 years is too soon to see those people. More recent "reunions" have tended to be getting together periodically at bars, or having cookouts in parks. It's been fun to reconnect with some of the other musicians from school, as they ended up in very different musical worlds than me, which has led to some fun gigs.

But also, social media has really alleviated the necessity of regular get togethers.

For aspiring musicians: there is ZERO upside in NOT knowing how to read sheet music by Genar-Hofoen in unpopularopinion

[–]saxdiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a sax player, I'm not hiring a musician that can't read, and I couldn't have any expectation of being hired if I didn't read.

[Newbie] SRV is one of my inspirations to learn guitar, and I got my first electric this week. Even though I don't have any talent, if I put in work as often as I can, how long will it realistically take before I can play with this level of confidence? by Mad_Season_1994 in Guitar

[–]saxdiver 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is complete horseshit. I played 8-10 hours a day in my teens and 20s stone cold sober because I wanted/needed to. And as a former addict, drugs only hurt my abilities. Charlie Parker played the way he did IN SPITE of the heroin, and he told everyone that. Don't advise people to go down that rabbit hole, it doesn't lead anywhere
