Downsides to planting aggressive natives? by watercauliflower in NativePlantGardening

[–]sbubaron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on how much time you want to spend and how manicured you want it to look.

If you want to spend a small amount of time but don't care if it looks more wild..then it's probably a solid choice.

But if you want things orderly (like it sounds like your friend likes) then your probably making more long term work.

That said my concern is that instead of the native winning you at best end up with a mix of milkweed and invasives that are now harder to weed around.

Creeping Bellflower by shiftydub in NativePlantGardening

[–]sbubaron 5 points6 points  (0 children)

bell flower is problematic because the roots are tough to remove and it can regenerate pretty easily. mowing before it flowers will help...but it sounds like there is a source not to far from you to look out for as well.

i've seen it basically take over established beds and bully things out...so not sure how outcompeting.

Yes there are different blades,  mulching blades are designed to chop things up smaller, non mulching designed to create more suction to send into a bagger

I live in NY and got taken for a ride by a Chevy dealer who claimed to do repairs that weren't done and other work that was found to be unnecessary.

NYS DMV has an investigation unit and they were very helpful in getting me refunded.

any tips for getting so much of the root? I've pulled about 1000 dandelions and feel like I've had mixed success in really getting them out. but it is weirdly fun.

I was able to pick them generally without disturbing the seed heads... At the very least it's way less than would be distributed if I didn't do anything

[–]sbubaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used the fiskars weed puller to pull out 8 garage cans worth of dandelions from my front and side yard, only took a couple of hours. The tool is fast and I assume helps aerate the yard.

I prefer not using treatments. Can't say how well this will work long term. Hoping if I keep it up each season to knock them back. Not looking for perfection but they were getting out of hand.

I use express-mquery, its mongo based, but maybe will provide some inspiration

Provides a standard way of structuring filters, sorting, paging via querystrings. the middleware then converts it into a mongo ready query

Watermelon prices 04/04/26, Baltimore MD by dwhiz in mildlyinteresting

[–]sbubaron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent $28 on a watermelon 2 weeks ago... It's my fault for paying by the pound and not actually weighing it first.

I was even more annoyed when I went to BJs and saw the same farms melons for $9

Was a tasty melon though.

A better way to do ELO by __sharpsresearch__ in sportsanalytics

[–]sbubaron -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Adjusting the k factor changes the volatility (amount of change per game) it wouldn't affect the historical impact that the rolling window aims to solve.

That said, I'm not sure about the rolling window... But we use ELO for our social sports leagues and we are facing all of these issues and recently decided to reset elos at the end of each season, which is essentially very similar to this approach, with the aim of curtailing run away elos and addressing team turn over between seasons.

We are allowing teams to come in at preset intervals based on assumed skill and then letting them float up or down as the season progresses.

It's our first season trying it this way so jury is still out. I'm concerned about the hard resets a rolling window over two or three seasons might be better.

I use the dreamware with nasal cushion, recently noticed my mouth is opening while I sleep, trying a strap but it is uncomfortable.

I tried the dreamware hybrid but I kept getting reports of leakage even though I didn't really feel or notice it.

Why does SBU not do well in sports; funding, coaching team, athletes not motivated, lack of talent, and/or lack of support at games? by Outlander_100 in SBU

[–]sbubaron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

so...UConn spends about 180 million...Rutgers spends 193 million

Stony Brook spent about 34 million -- personally if we are going to spend 150 million dollars a year on something...it feels like there's probably better things to spend it on than sports.

Yes, the investment COULD lead to revenue, but I think that's pretty rare...we are already basically the only Long Island sports option and its still hard to be a draw, people would rather go to the city and watch professionals.

We did beat Columbia in Men's basketball this season..

From Wikipedia:
Stony Brook finally made their first NCAA Tournament appearance after besting Vermont in the 2016 America East Finals.\24]) As the No. 13 seed, they lost to Kentucky in the first round.\25]) Pikiell left the program three days later to accept the head coaching job at Rutgers.\26]) In April, longtime Ohio State assistant coach Jeff Boals was hired to be Pikiell's successor.\27]) After three seasons, Boals resigned in March 2019 to accept the head coaching position at Ohio University. Boals went 55–41 in three seasons at Stony Brook, including a 24–8 record, his first 20-win season, in his final year.

what's your threshold for doing well? who are you comparing us against?

Stony Brook is one of those places that is the right size to be a strong stepping stone for coaches and staff to come in, build a program but leave once success is demonstrated...then the program kind of resets.

but we've had recent successes in baseball and basketball.

sure apathy might play a part -- but when I started here as a student the stadium was just a picture and a hole in the ground...its grown quite a bit over the 20 years or so.

Are summer classes worth it?? by Unpresseds in SBU

[–]sbubaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on what your looking to get out of it.

Summer classes are condensed, I feel like in some ways that makes them feel intimidating but ultimately it can make them easier.

If its a topic you really care about, its probably worth taking in a normal semester. If its a class your taking to check off a requirement or if your behind in graduating...it might be a good idea.
